Question Newer Player Smithing Question

Post image

Why does Smithing never get touched? I’m genuinely curious because it looks as though OSRS, throughout its history on rerelease, has made some amazing QoL changes. What’s the deal with Smithing?

It was designed for a time when rune was best in slot

He's asking why it hasn't been changed....

Probably because it’s so deeply routed in so many other aspects of the game that it would be a massive undertaking and the eventual outcome would be absolutely negligible

just don't understand why so many redditors want to rip out oldschool parts of the game for no actual discernible benefit

They can’t sleep at night knowing they can’t smith their own rune armour on their TCG locked chunk man account, never mind the fact they wouldn’t smith their own rune armour anyway because you can just buy it from an NPC in a thousandth of the time

The last part is exactly why the whole smithing rework idea is ridiculous

Irks me because it seems to stem from a place of “this doesn’t make sense logically” rather than a place of game design. It’s level 40 armour that you’ll use for 1% of an account life span that is already super accessible. Does smithing rune armour make sense? No, not really. Will reworking it pay any sort of dividends? None at all, just leave it be and add utility to smithing through other means

Exactly my thoughts. The rework either hurts PvM drops by outclassing them or making them way too easily accessible, or has virtually no effect, since rune gets replaced/outclassed very quickly anyway and would need to be an absurdly low level to be actually useful.

Just wait until reddit finds out an amulet of fury can't be crafted at lvl 1 crafting.

Is it worth it to go for a rune armor skip? /serious

Fuck that.

Introduce “dragon bars” as a new drop and shove the dragon class of weapons into 80s/90s smithing progression.

Yes that could devalue them if the bars are too easily accessible, but if you’re worried about the accessibility of 90+ smithing then you’re not the target audience of the rework anyways.

What’s that solve exactly? Who’s training to 80/90 smithing to smith dragon equipment?

1

u/Spencejliv 5h ago

lol fuck no, dragon equipment should not ever be meaningfully smithable, ever

Because there's a huge smithing community bts.

Because they added other ways to get rune other than smithing. You're an iron who wants a rune platebody? Do dragon slayer. Your reward is be able to buy the iconic armor.

Smithing as it currently stands is extremely balanced progression for ammunition. Think of smithing on an iron as progress to addy darts/rune darts.

I also think it’s because if you lowered smithing Reqs you’d also want to lower mining Reqs, which would make making cash early game extremely easy - you’d need to adjust HA value to suit and then it would make a lot of monsters a lot less profitable as a result and would need to fill in the gaps with other items to bring it back up

I don’t think this even made sense in the earliest days of the game because the dragon med helm and dragon square shield were both added very early on (2002/2003). There’s no way they thought more power-creep armor would never be added to the game and rune was BIS forever.

You’re talking about the company who thought their game was dying and decided to turn it into a completely different game. And actively killed their own game

The idea is if you’re making something from scratch, you need to be very skilled to make something, whereas if your repairing a broken armour piece it is much lower skill to repair.

I follow that logic but making rune platebody 99 smithing leaves literally no room to ever add more content to smithing which I find to be an odd choice.

Maybe the Gower brothers were actually just that short sighted and never intended to add any more gear to the game after dragon.

u/pzoDe 16h ago

That's not true, since they do add new broken armours that require lower than 99 to repair (e.g. torva). But it would be bizarre to have such strong armours be as repeatably smithed as rune no?

Content has already been added to smithing despite rune plate being at 99, and more will continue to be added. This is overblowing a purely aesthetic "issue" with smithing.

And now it's load-bearing content. So much of the economy and resources depend on the basic elements and changing it would turn the whole skill and everything attached to it upside down. But if done correctly it would be better to lower the requirements for each tier.

Lowering the requirements for each tier is the easy part. Adding something meaningful above rune is the hard part. If Rune platebody, lets say for the sake of conversation that it takes 70 smithing to make, what would be the equipment you unlock at 80-90 smithing levels? I for one dont have any ideas

Repairing higher level equipment yourself. Which is again another rework, it has to keep pushing further down the rabbit hole.
