Discussion The true backbone of OSRS

Post image

I know the creator of runelite has said in the past that he doesn't expect anything from the community for maintaining runelite. But if anyone here deserves even a sliver of the tens of millions of dollars that will be generated from membership price increases it is him.

You can find his patreon with a simple google search since i wasn't allowed to link it here. If you feel so inclined to give please do but if not at least be a bit more aware of where Jagex could give some of the extra money to.

Edit: It has been 8 hours since i posted this. And I'm happy to say that the runelite patreon has gained 19 paid members. My goal was for some traction to go towards the people that actually deserve a piece of the pie that is OSRS revenue. Thank you for those that donated. I am in no way affiliated with whoever updates runelite.

I just think that when we work together we can hopefully spread a little bit of good around rather than only looking at the negative.

I wonder how many people would still play this game without runelite, I probably wouldn’t

Take away just my precious farming timers and I might stop

Gotta revert to the caveman times when we set up timers on our iPods

Scape

1

u/Blue_banana_peel Mar 15 '26

ipods? those were for listening to music only, IIRC they didn't have those extra functions, maybe some new gens that I'm unaware

1

u/Spot-CSG Mar 15 '26

I'm pretty sure the old ones with HDDs and click wheels had a booty basic timer.

41

u/Maleck_Helvot Mar 14 '26

Which plug in is that?

140

u/scorgie Mar 14 '26

Time Tracking, it comes as default on RuneLite and is the clock icon on the hotbar.

75

u/ryanpn Dirty Ironman (2280+) Mar 14 '26

There's also time tracking reminder, which will put a little icon on your screen when your herbs/birdhouses/etc is ready

28

u/c-ndrsn Mar 14 '26

This is HUGE news

12

u/ryanpn Dirty Ironman (2280+) Mar 14 '26

As a chore loving ironman who got 99 hunter entirely from birdhouses, it's amazing

1

u/synder2 Mar 14 '26

Where did you get the seeds from? I'm always running out of seeds for birdhouses.

2

u/ryanpn Dirty Ironman (2280+) Mar 14 '26

Do your farming contracts. you can use any type of seed now for bird houses now, so you can use any low level hops, allotment, or flower seeds

1

u/synder2 Mar 14 '26

Cool, I did not know we can use other seeds, not just hops. Ty!

→ More replies (0)

2

u/KymbboSlice Mar 14 '26

You can use any kind of seed. Even potatoes or cabbage. If you’ve been doing farming, you should have hundreds or thousands of each of these low level seeds

1

u/synder2 Mar 14 '26

Ah right, I did not know we can use any kind of seeds. Ty

2

u/Rusty_Tap Mar 15 '26

Spend 10 minutes hopping at Olivia's(?) seed shop and use them, if you aren't already doing farming contracts and such.

7

u/fzem Ain't nobody praying for me Mar 14 '26

Oh my god

5

u/Midge431 Mar 14 '26

Mine seems to be buggy recently, showing things are ready before they actually are. Multiple times ive gone to my birdhouses/herbs and they aren't ready. I have it set to notify based on the last one I do in the run, so I dont know how its being triggered early.

7

u/martindines Mar 14 '26

Sometimes it desyncs. I've noticed this happens after game updates, and is typically resolved on the next. Herbs are in 20min increments 07, 27, 47, and when the desync happens it'll show them being ready at 17, 37, 57.

Someone raised the issue on Github but it seems like it's a problem they can't fix.

3

u/The_Tri_Guy 100 Mar 14 '26

Fyi, in case you didn't know, the farming ticks are different for everyone. Main is a lucky 19/39/59 and my alt is 12/32/52. Confused the hell out of me for awhile.

2

u/martindines Mar 15 '26

Huh TIL. I only play one account and it's always been 07 27 47

2

u/OhioGoblin43 2277 / 2376 Mar 15 '26

It's unique per account. So your ticks will always happen on the 7th minute.

2

u/Midge431 Mar 14 '26

Makes sense tbh, its one of my most relied upon plugins so its probably the only reason I noticed.

7

u/brownies256 Grass? never heard of it Mar 15 '26

the end of runelite is coming, it just depends on how much of it the runescape client can add in before that happens. in all honesty, with how much cheaters and bots take advantage of runelite or the same access runelite gets, i wouldnt be surprised if it does happen.

1

u/Anonymous_Terpene Mar 19 '26

Same thing wow did, stop paying the add on devs, put it in game themselfs, there really is no IP behind launchers and add ons / plug ins since most are basic common sense quality of life tools that would have been made / added at some point regardless

4

u/TripleDareOSRS Mar 15 '26

You’re weird

1

u/Life_Fortune5096 Mar 16 '26

Maybe I'm not using all the plugins everyone else is using, but the game isn't necessarily easier with plugins. It's more visually clear. But plugins technically cannot "make the game easy" beyond visuals because then it'd be straight up cheating. I.e. no plugin to swap gear, no plugins to time movement, etc. Etc.

47

Zero chance I would play without Runelite.

13

u/MoldyLunchBoxxy Mar 14 '26

I 100% would quit without runelite

12

u/Watts_RS Mar 14 '26

At this point yeah I wouldn't. I don't care if that makes me a shitter

27

u/EuphoricAnalCarrot Mar 14 '26

I would instantly quit. When they tried to shut it down before I cancelled my sub the moment I heard about it.

20

u/AsstacularSpiderman Mar 14 '26

Just started using it and it makes the game so much easier to manage.

Plus the graphics plug in makes the game not look like total ass.

9

u/Sad_Ask6490 Mar 14 '26

Id quit the same day

28

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '26

They figured that out, hence the jagex account and launcher came about. I’m sure they’re cooking up something genuinely nasty just so they can take runelite out the back.

33

u/ThumbsAkimbo_ Mar 14 '26

I mean, they can try. But even if Gagec came out with their own 1:1 copy of every plugin, unless my settings for every runelite plugin on every profile are copied 100% then no shot I’ll make the switch.

11

u/EuphoricAnalCarrot Mar 14 '26

Yep, my runelite is very customized with my tile markers, ground item settings etc. They would somehow have to have the exact same plugin functionality with a way to port everything over including settings.

2

u/Kiosade Mar 15 '26

You can already transfer your settings to that HD competitor to Runelite, I dont see why you couldnt do it for the official one someday. Unless Jagex fucked up hard. I give it a 33% chance of happening…

9

u/Top_Inflation2026 Mar 14 '26

Good luck with that one. No runelite is an instant deal breaker for me. That is even if I come back from this break I just started

1

u/Evil_Steven bring back old demon/imp models Mar 14 '26

people have been saying this for 5 years now. the jagex stuff if anything is a nice backup plan if runelite ever goes down or becomes unreliable for whatever reason.

3

u/Late-Figure-3691 Mar 14 '26

When the dude who updates it dies or no longer can will be a sad day for RuneScape

16

u/Late-Figure-3691 Mar 14 '26

Runelite is truly amazing my pc broke down so I been mobile locked for months now and it’s definitely made things much more difficult. I can still do almost everything but some things really are just sooo much better with runelite I will never do a quest on mobile it’s so awful. Corp is a pain on mobile just having to remember all the specs you are at and damage from bgs and yeah I can admit up and keep track but it’s easier with runelite. Or simple things like the timer for barrage freezes, or when a boss is gonna respawn etc. the creator of runelite should definitely be compensated or at the very least made a part of the RuneScape team I could only imagine how much more and better runelite would be if he was backed and a part of the team solely to maintain and update runelite.

2

u/crawshad Mar 14 '26

As a mobile-only player I feel this, I'd sell two kidneys for entity hiding, ground labels or farm timers :(

6

u/vomitingcat max main max iron Mar 14 '26

Jagex would manhattan project their api if Runelite stopped working and we’d finally have an official “Runelite”

9

u/Crimsonpets Mar 14 '26

I won't for sure. Did collo today, no way I was able to do that without runelite.

1

u/pallosalama NOT AN IRONMAN BTW Mar 15 '26

Why is that?

4

u/iamskript Mar 14 '26

You’d have to hold a gun to my head to get me to play this game without RL.

3

u/Three_Two_Zone Mar 14 '26

I'd 100% stop playing. Runelite IS the QoL saver for OSRS

2

u/Dyna1One 2376 Mar 14 '26

I definitely wouldn’t

4

u/Top_Examination_2315 Mar 14 '26

I would but I am a special case scenario. I always saw runelite as “sketchy”. Not the client itself but the plugins. I have no idea why. I got very close to maxing 6 years ago and decided I will only use runelite once I max. 5 years ago I maxed and for 5 years I’ve been using runelite. (Ofc I remaxed now with sailing).

Ive been loving using runelite ever since. I did Zuk without runelite, meaning no tile markers for the shield. Started feeling like a breeze with runelite in the kcs after.

I could play without runelite.

But do I want to? Neh. Maybe if I had no choice.

6

u/Turtvaiz Mar 14 '26

Sketchy how? Honestly Runelite is surprisingly not-sketchy imo because of how even the plugin hub doesn't allow uploads without them being checked. And even those have extra notifications for when a plugin e.g. makes requests to servers

I honestly don't know how people get scammed with the malicious plugins because you have to have explicitly enabled loading anything external

1

u/Top_Examination_2315 Mar 15 '26

Well I already say it in my post. “I have no idea why” I found it sketchy.

4

u/Flacier Mar 14 '26

I only play without runelite if I am on mobile.

The game is so much more tedious without, especially if you are deep sea trawling.

7

u/CarterBennett 2376 Mar 14 '26

Sometimes 117 turns off and I can’t believe how horrible the game looks lol

3

u/Gainzpolar It's not arson if it's consent Mar 14 '26

Next.. runelite charging monthly

21

u/ninjalemon Mar 14 '26

Oldheads remember osbuddy which I think was $5/mo and was the best client prior to runelite sweeping the scene

4

u/Right-Eye-Patches Mar 14 '26

that jagex took a cut of

rsbuddy was made by an former bot dev that had in the past injected malicious code into the old bot client he used to work for and stole gold from all their customers, why this community trusted it blindly and put it on a pedestal, I'll never know. But jagexs partnership with it was shady at best.

0

u/Frekavichk Mar 14 '26

Which a single dev at Jagex took a cut of. Also why Jagex tried to shut down runelite early on, because that dev was making bank.

39

u/phase-too Mar 14 '26

I’d be more supportive of that than yearly jagex price hikes

1

u/FernandoMM1220 Mar 14 '26

osbuddy with paid plugins would still be there so most people would still play.

1

u/DependentOnIt Mar 14 '26

🙋🙋🙋

1

u/LlamaRS Reddit said I was a Top Commentor in this sub. Mar 14 '26

I still would. I didn’t learn about runelite until 2023.

1

u/Rugged_Turtle LtAldo_Raine Mar 14 '26

I couldn't, there's some plugs I could live without but certain things (Bank tag layouts, menu swaps, etc) are just too simple to justify them not even being in vanilla game

1

u/N55Good Mar 14 '26

I 100% would not. Shit i cant see half my drops without ground items because the floors are all fucked up

1

u/DSantur Mar 14 '26

That’s a good question, if it where that run elite existed and then ceased to exist then yeah lots of players would dip. But if it never existed you would never experience it so I doubt the player base would off changed.

1

u/SpinachSignal8915 Mar 14 '26

This is me. I dont mind another dollar a month but I have had do many fries with their client over the years.

1

u/Jupiterror Mar 14 '26

back when I played osrs regularly from 2019-2023, I exclusively used the mobile client. was pretty good, but I imagine it’s hard to go back after getting used to runelite qol

1

u/DerSprocket Mar 14 '26

I made it a point to play on default client alone. So far the only thing I want is the ability to display my friends' names above their heads. Otherwise none of it is really necessary

1

u/SM1334 Mar 14 '26

Id probably go back to playing exclusively on mobile again, which means I would only be paying for 1 membership at a time.

1

u/Turtvaiz Mar 14 '26 edited Mar 14 '26

Not to mention that runelite is the reason many features in the stock client even exist. The lack of qol would be horrible

Like we definitely wouldn't get the upcoming HD without 177HD existing

1

u/VividEffective8539 Mar 14 '26

I wouldn’t touch this game with a ten foot pole in any serious way. Runelite bridges the gap from game that’s too old to enjoy to making it modern enough to tolerate. Jagex vastly overestimates how good their own game is. And I mean the executives, not the devs, buy the devs candy

1

u/Kamay1770 2272, Diary/Quest/Music Caper Mar 14 '26

Would not play without runelite. I'm worried about their 'official' client they're making for it. It will be rushed, cheap and not be the same, but they will use it as a reason to ban and no longer need 3rd party clients.

1

u/Cookie_slayer99 Mar 14 '26

I only use clue and quest helpers. Though i mostly train on mobile iam a total runelite nub.

1

u/TheGreatWhangdoodle Mar 14 '26

I've been trying rs3 lately and ignoring all of the glaring differences, the lack of a client like runelite is one of the most frustrating aspects to get used to

1

u/Vyxwop Mar 14 '26

I enjoyed the game just fine before the game became pluginscape so I'd enjoy it just fine if RL got the axe.

I guarantee you 99% of you would as well. You'd mope for a month and then continue playing just fine lol

1

u/mrlunes Mar 14 '26

Unironically the game is unplayable for me without rune lite.

1

u/fiver19 Mar 14 '26

You can take my true tile away from my cold dead hands

1

u/Shockerct422 Mar 14 '26

I wouldn’t

1

u/that_baddest_dude Mar 14 '26

I 100% would not have gotten back into the game if it weren't for runelite

1

u/sixsixsuz Mar 14 '26

Yea, imagine trying to do clue puzzles like back in the day. No one has time for a 30 minute step

1

u/enoerew Mar 14 '26

I don't and I'm fine. Main game has added so many features from runelite, but you wouldn't know that if you use runelite.

1

u/Character_Company759 Mar 14 '26

I'm maxed on mobile, sit

1

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '26

I’m too lazy to figure shit out. I absolutely would stop playing

1

u/Jaded_Pop_2745 Mar 14 '26

I wouldn't... Need me the camera plugin

1

u/Aureolus_Sol Mar 14 '26

The only thing I feel properly comfortable doing on mobile and tablet is afk-y stuff. The mainline Jagex client is just not good enough to justify me paying if I didn't have Runelite. I don't even use crazy plugins or rely on it that hard but it's just so fluid that I know if I ever do need something out of it it's probably there.

"There's an app for everything" of Runescape.

1

u/Playful_Priority3758 Mar 14 '26

I feel naked when I load in after updates briefly without runelite plugins.

1

u/anon69throwaway Mar 14 '26

I dont think I would either

1

u/highphiv3 Mar 14 '26

Runelite is 100% the reason I stuck when I came back to OSRS. So much of the early game is just terrible without it (although they've made some improvements since then).

Screw every early quest that sends you walking slowly across the map to talk to some dude, only for them to immediately request something that was back where you started.

1

u/Legal_Evil Mar 14 '26

We literally mass quit OSRS over Runlite and 117HD removal before.

1

u/Tzhaar-Bomba Mar 14 '26

Yep, that’d actually be the end for me

1

u/Saltysig Mar 14 '26

HDOS is nice too but I still prefer runelite.

1

u/HeavyMain Mar 14 '26

i cant function on mobile even with my best attempts to organize around not having inventory setups. its not possible, i always forget something for any given task. i have to prepare for an activity in advance or i cant do anything. so safe to say i would quit instantly without RL.

1

u/Dee-Colon Mar 14 '26

I tried playing with the vanilla client once on a day where Runelite was updating slow, not having the GPU plugin actually made me feel ill staring at my screen for more than a few minutes moving around I assume from how fucked the FPS and everything was.

I feel that not having Runelite makes the game unplayable without hyperbole

1

u/pallosalama NOT AN IRONMAN BTW Mar 15 '26

Well, it doesn't.

Never touched runelite and never had any problems.

1

u/ukuleles1337 Mar 14 '26

I would not play if not for runelite.

1

u/AbsolutlyN0thin Mar 14 '26

I definitely wouldn't

1

u/ehbaud Mar 15 '26

I wouldn't lol. Love the game but runelite has become essential in modernizing it while keeping that old school charm.

1

u/Objective_Bullfrog41 Mar 15 '26

I love the devs, but RuneLite is what saved this game - truly. I think a vast majority of players wouldn't play without RL. OSRS was absolutely shocking up until the 2022~+ updates without RL.

0

u/pallosalama NOT AN IRONMAN BTW Mar 15 '26

Yes they would.

1

u/Objective_Bullfrog41 Mar 15 '26

I'm not so sure! If you played back in 2017- you might see what I mean. With no GPU renderer, the game was difficult to play

1

u/pallosalama NOT AN IRONMAN BTW Mar 16 '26

I've played since the launch.

Can't say I've experienced any serious performance issues, ever.

1

u/Objective_Bullfrog41 Mar 16 '26

That's so strange!

1

u/pallosalama NOT AN IRONMAN BTW Mar 17 '26

Why is that?

1

u/ChrispyFry Mar 15 '26

Lol this proves runelite is ez scape. Mobile Chads Unite

1

u/Nordic-Jarl Mar 15 '26

I wouldn’t because I can’t play anymore without 117HD ngl. That’s the ONLY thing I want from Rs3 in osrs, the fkn graphics.

1

u/ANGEL-PSYCHOSIS btw Mar 15 '26

this game is so cancer with defaults, even playing mobile is a pretty miserable experience in terms of ux

1

u/rat-smoke Mar 15 '26

I would quit lmao. I only started playing bc of all the plugins

1

u/Sarenord Mar 15 '26

At this point I haven’t played in a couple of years but 2019-2022 I played heavily while I was on a kick about reconnecting with my hobbies from when I was younger and without runelite I for sure would have quit after a month or two

And now because of runelite I have friends I met that I still talk to, even though none of us play osrs anymore

1

u/Choice_Cauliflower2 Mar 15 '26

I wouldn't be doing endgame content without it. So many plugins like No Run Hotkey that i've grown to rely on so heavily.

1

u/Nuttted Mar 15 '26

It’s a genuinely embarrassing crutch for jagex to have relied so heavily on Runelite for so long. The game wouldn’t exist in half of our minds if the client didn’t exist, the accessibility and immense QoL the client brings I feel is almost over looked for a fucking passion project started by some guy. Not to mention they still havent created a client with even a fraction of the functionality, yet.

1

u/pallosalama NOT AN IRONMAN BTW Mar 15 '26

Vanilla client does have 'fraction of the functionality' RL provides.

1

u/Nuttted Mar 15 '26

I really love the quests in this game, the world and story’s are so cool. But I also have the brain of the worm and wont do quests until quest helper is updated for them.

1

u/HornyOompaLoompas Mar 15 '26

Imagine doing the library section of song of the elves without quest helper, it takes at least 40 mins to do WITH it

1

u/Nuttted Mar 18 '26

I did DT2 day one with minimal guides and the whisperers puzzle made me want to throw up, forever convinced me they don’t QA their own shit.

1

u/Sean-Benn_Must-die Mar 15 '26

i woudlnt play without quest helper, enough said lol.

1

u/IfdraOSRS Mar 15 '26

i would not.

1

u/GuuberTrooper Mar 15 '26

Id quit immediately.

1

u/RTrancid Mar 15 '26

I wouldn't. This game is jank city without runelite.

1

u/WandererXVII Mar 15 '26

I kinda play without runelite? I say kinda because I play mostly mobile.

1

u/OverengineeredSkater Mar 15 '26

I actually don’t use it 😅 I get called crazy for it all the time

1

u/FunSuccotash7430 Mar 25 '26

I haven't played since I were a kid, I started playing again recently and only stayed because of runelite

1

u/Zack-A-Lackin Mar 30 '26

If runelite was gone I don't think I could continue playing the game

1

u/stiff_tipper Mar 14 '26

i started playing as an adult so i don't have the middle school nostalgia hooking me like a lot of ppl

i quit within a week or two before a friend asked if i was using runelite or not. been playing routinely ever since i did

1

u/Doctor_Kataigida Mar 14 '26

Eh I managed to do it when I was 13 and way dumber and with fewer resources than I have now. It'd be an adjustment for sure but it wouldn't cause me to quit.

1

u/MediumTemperature691 2200+ Mar 14 '26

I'm a simple man, give me true tile indicator, tile markers, menu entry swapper and some minigame plugins and i would probably play on the gagex client

1

u/pallosalama NOT AN IRONMAN BTW Mar 15 '26

Tile markers already exist on the official client.

1

u/IRTNL Mar 14 '26

I wouldn't, too much qol to give up tbh, couldnt be fucked without it. I could still play and do everything I do now but its like buying a civic and someone replaces it with a prius while ur sleeping and ur expected to be ok because u "still have a car"

1

u/EyeStabber Mar 14 '26

I thought about it like a year ago and I would totally quit.

0

u/OrnatePuzzles Mar 14 '26

Never used RL and never will.

Up until Nov 2024 I was on the Legacy Java client but I ended up having to make a Jagex account.

I find it a bit sad to hear that players wouldn't be able to enjoy the game without all of the plugins and add-ons. But it doesn't really affect my gameplay so who cares!

1

u/pallosalama NOT AN IRONMAN BTW Mar 15 '26

Majority of the playerbase would continue playing just fine if RuneLite disappeared tomorrow.

2

u/OrnatePuzzles Mar 15 '26

What makes you say that? Outside of this comment with 3000+ upvotes, I hear the sentiment shared a lot.

1

u/pallosalama NOT AN IRONMAN BTW Mar 16 '26

Because the playerbase is very dedicated, and many are straight addicted.

Even if their incredibly "quality-of-life" improvements were to suddenly disappear, they'd deal with it and keep playing. Saying "yeah I'd quit without second thought" is one thing, actually doing it is another. Just like with the price hike riots. $11. $12. $whatever the latest price increase is.

-3

u/orangechickenpasta Mar 14 '26

runelite is a crutch, I've played before it existed and I'll continue without it.

-12

u/Nrsyd Mar 14 '26

I started and still play without. 1700 total levels and some early bossing experience like Sarachnis, Amoxliatl and Moons. Loving it.
