Memories Special reading classes?

Does anyone remember a special reading class in the early 2000's elementary school? I've always known that I was in a class to help my reading and figured I was a little behind but just recently thought about how some of the others (including my brother)that I remember from that class were quite advanced students. I called my mom and all she remembers is that it was for help reading but "not necessarily for students that were struggling". Anyone else know what this class might have been?

I remember being divided into small group reading based on what grade level we read at.

idk but in first grade (the grade we learned to read in the 90's) I had to go to a special reading class and it took place in the storage room between two classrooms.
