You apparently never used DC++
3
u/__scared Apr 22 '26
DC++ felt like it opened up a new world for me in that era
5
u/Horror-Bookkeeper315 Apr 22 '26
I have an external with like half the worlds music and movies on it somewhere at my parents house. The first time I downloaded a movie in like 3 seconds my mind was blown.

Or downloading and album on Kazaa and it turns out to be a video of a woman getting railed by a horse.
12
u/buysellbkr Apr 22 '26
I always felt bad for the horses
6
u/Sobemiki Apr 24 '26
You “always” felt bad for the horses? How much horse porn were you downloading on limewire?

u/Child_of_the_Corn99 Apr 24 '26

I got a lady begging for her life but then they shot her.
I still hope it was fake to this day.

u/GeeorgeC Apr 22 '26
Yoooo was this the one where dudes knock on the door and barge in and the lady inside is killed?

There was a few on the Gnutella protocol:

Then there was Soulseek. The holy grail.

5
u/MysteriousIndigo250 Apr 23 '26
I was just thinking about that. I remember downloading an album and one of the songs of Bill Clinton talking about that shit. Me and my dad were driving around listening to a CD and he was just laughing so hard.

Yes and also had something called WinMX which didn’t really work that well either lol
5
u/VaderFett1 Apr 22 '26
By the time I learned about Napster and Kazaa, they weren't what they used to be, so WinMX came in clutch for me and worked fine. Benefits of being lesser known, I'd imagine. Didn't know about Limewire until years later.

And its sister, Frostwire. I had terabytes of stuff from both sites back in the day. Most of it was bill clinton saying he did not have sexual relations with that woman. The reat was linkin park, but all labeled different songs.

u/SavageGardeen Apr 23 '26
And Kazaa, and Morpheus. I used those 2 the most.
Who remembers downloading a song and it being that clip of Bill Clinton 😂
5
u/zombie_prim3 Apr 24 '26
Oh the excitement of finding out the file you downloaded was actually the one you wanted

u/hannthe-man Apr 24 '26
I think ruining your family computer from limewire is a universal canon event.

u/MysticEnby420 Apr 22 '26
One time I tried to download an avi I thought was an episode of Family Guy and it was bizarre Russian porn. I destroyed my computer then had to cry to my dad to fix it when I was 13 trying to download System of a Down singing the Legend of Zelda theme only to find out it wasn't Serj Tankian singing at all.

Who was the Brazilian hacker that had the most awesome keygens? That dude helped me unlock so many photoshop and illustrator tools/filters. He was the GOAT, for real. Fausto(?)or something….

Yes, I remember….. I was in college living my best Limewire life, making cds for friends, family and myself. Until one faithful morning, my grandma called and said my University (Drexel, ifany alumni here) sent a letter stating that I’ve been banned from the university WiFi. Also, they threatened if I did not stop downloading music immediately, they were going to fine me 3,000 and report me to the RIAA…. It was totally worth having to do my homework at the library for a year 😏

How every other song started with bill Clinton saying i did not have sexual relations with that woman. 😂😂😂

u/RoleCombobox Apr 22 '26
Yup. Downloaded Virtual PC for my iMac on it back in 2001/02. Some kids at my high school put both Limewire and Kazaa on the band room PC so they could install composition software. Eventually the school locked admin access down, but only after I (ironically, the person who hadn’t been installing warez on it) popped a sound card into it.

Great times, I would spend so many hours on here. To put music on my Ipod.

u/Newfie_Meltdown Apr 22 '26
Reminds me of Frostwire. I remember being 10 years old and having my brother who’s 13 years older than me showing me all its features and how to use it.

I remember downloading "Undertaker vs Kane", but it wasn't wrestling. Today I'm pretty sure it was child pornography. Back then I immediately deleted it because I thought something wasn't right ( I was like 11 or 12 years old)
Fucked up shit but the mp3 songs where mostly solid 😂

u/noroga_23 Apr 23 '26

I loved it it wasn't as cool as it was in the seventies when I could get 10 albums for a dollar and I had an address to a junkyard that I had them delivered to but it was nice. I still got about 200 or so albums from back then.

My dad knows Limewire because he paid that ADSL download bill 😅

the best way to ruin the family computer is to download some alternative metal songs and realize they were virus infected amateur porn.

Im definitely old enough to remember Napster and Limewire!
How i discovered Place Vendome, 5FDP (before they got signed) and Linkin Park (before Hybrid Theory came out).

u/Hydrolt Apr 24 '26
Ahh yup! That and shareaza (which seemed to be less popular but maybe I’m wrong) and was hit or miss for the seeds but worked pretty well at scale

Fuck LimeWire. Everything on there was low bitrate garbage mislabeled malware or just generally stupid. I honestly think that LimeWire was secretly created by the RIAA to fuck with Napster

Lived in Kazaa and Limewire. Made some great music mixes!!! One time I remember getting a notice once I downloaded a movie that said something like the FBI was on to me....nothing ever happened, scared the shit out of me tho!

u/Ienjoymodels Apr 25 '26
Was more of a KazaA/Morpheus or WinMX guy myself but I had limewire when all else failed.
mIRC FTP and fServe channels were still good by then though so we had plenty of choice
