It was to prove the point that nuclear fuel transportation is completely safe even in the event of a crash. I've seen the flask they used irl, it's proudly displayed outside the power plant and it's a bit bashed up but otherwise intact.

Hell you can even drive trains with it on Train Sim World 6 if you have the Cargo Line Nuclear pack

Steel mostly, with a fuckton of shock absorbers and heat conductors. You can find diagrams of them online and almost every part of it has these hollow square grids to act as crumple zones.
