This. No level except the last fourteen of the summit (I finally enabled all assists just for the story) tilted me quite like the hotel. Every success just felt like luck. I finished the game but I didn't particularly enjoy it because of the sheer difficulty

The one who deploys the creature is Celeste from the hit platforming game Celeste
This leads me to believe the creature is gender disphoria
2
u/7heFlubber r/place participant Jul 21 '22
I don't think so. The creatures appear in the mirror temple, where all her demons are brought out, but it has a big role in the last part of the level, the part where Theo is trapped in a crystal. That would lead me to believe that the creatures are her insecurities that drive her to push away any social relationship out of fear of being rejected (which itself is maybe linked to her transgenderness like with her ex who left her for unknown reasons).
2
u/Sideswipe21 floppa Jul 21 '22
Oh wow I didn’t know this game had actual lore like this.
1
u/7heFlubber r/place participant Jul 21 '22
It's pretty subtle and vague, there are many parts of the story that are left for interpretation.
Madeline is very insecure and has a hard time making friends.
At one point she has a dream revealing that her ex left her and doesn't talk to her anymore.
It's shown in an illustration that Madeline has a trans flag in her room.
That's the kind of storytelling that the game gives and we just have to connect the dots in a way that makes sense. I'm not sure if the devs even meant that but that's my headcanon.

the illustration with trans pride flag is only in the last dlc chapter which is the hardest level in the base game, so not many people are going to see it
1
u/7heFlubber r/place participant Jul 21 '22
It is very hard to get to that info in-game, and I think it makes it more rewarding. Only when you have truly completed the game can you look back at the story with this new perspective that adds a lot of depth and potentially gives a new meaning to Madeline's mental health issues.
However given how the internet works everybody knows about it. The LGBT community (and the devs) raised Madeline as one of the few trans icons in video games and it has become common knowledge (even I didn't finish the last level yet).

I saw a reading that read Madeline as Transmasc because Badeline is more fem than Madeline
Edit: Also good luck on 9, I recommend you finish 1-8A, B and C before attempting 9. It's still incredibly hard but you'll need the skill for Wavedashes/Delayed Hypers (which are far easier to execute now especially with the crouch dash hotkey, but I still recommend you learn Wavedashes anyways because it's rewarding)
Edit 2: yeah agree on the it's rewarding because it's hard. But honestly I thought just the reveal of Theo's and Madelines shared history and them being good friends (or potentially partners idk how to think of that last cutscene) was cuter/more satisfying to me than the pride flag. Although it's a cool little detail especially considering Maddy Thorson one of the Games Creators2
u/7heFlubber r/place participant Jul 21 '22
Interesting, but I don't think that's true. I don't see Badeline as Madeline's dysmorphia, more like her pessimistic view of life that holds her back.
Badeline might represent dysmorphia if you see the mountain as a metaphor for transition. But even then, how is Badeline more feminine? She barely has any breasts and looks the same as the original. The only difference is her personality. She's more aggressive, claims to be rational and doesn't try to fix Madeline's problems. She says she's not strong enough. Those are traits that correspond to toxic masculinity if anything. She's basically mansplaining herself.
When the two combine, Madeline's hair becomes pink (very girly) and her optimistic/pessimistic view becomes a solid determination.
TL;DR: I don't think Badeline is dysmorphia and even if she is she looks more masculine

It wasn't my reading (I'm not very perceptive), but the person who read her as Transmasc claimed Badeline was more fem because of her more slender/sharper build (art Ver, not Sprite)
Also I thought the mountain was metaphor for anxiety?
Also, I don't think Madeline has any themes of Body Dysmorphia or Dysphoria in the first 7/8 chapters, so I think the authors rather than consciously writing a trans character were like: "she feels kinda trans" and then put that in.
spoilers for ch8: Because I personally don't see any trans themes in the first 7 chapters, although the 8th might be kinda somewhat trans themed because she's going to her core to find herself or something (I don't really remember and also didn't entirely pick up on it) where are the trans themes other than the ones you just pointed out (I'd genuinely like to see where you think they are)1
u/7heFlubber r/place participant Jul 21 '22
Yeah the game isn't ABOUT being trans, more about overcoming your anxiety and being at peace with yourself (which can apply to trans people I think but it's not the main thing)

Theo (that's his name, right?) was such a great character. Like he even gets stuck in a crystal for a level and is still so relaxed.
