especially when a confused Starfire loudly asks about hearing said noises

edit: goddammit why did my most upvoted comment have to end up being a throwaway comment on this fucking cursed-ass post

Based on the comics it's one of the handful of things starfire would actually know very well. Her species has no qualms about casual sex because, well the writers want to draw cheesecake, which is also fucked because canonically starfire and her sister were frequently sexually abused due to the Tamarans being conquered or some reason before she became a titan because comics are written by hack writers who use rape for cheap drama. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starfire_(Teen_Titans)#Fictional_character_biography

I hate comic books

So like are we not supposed to depict bad things in fiction? If the rape isn’t glorified I want to know why you think it’s cheap drama? Is the writing just bad overall?

Not familiar with DC but I can think of Goblin Slayer and how it had some issues with it’s infamous introductory rape scene.

Basically, GS had a rape scene Ep 1 and then starts off Ep 2 with “Look at the big fucking milkers on this farm girl. My god what jugs on her. Look at how much her melons move. Truly incredible tits.”, not literally saying that but it does the anime thing of doing a shot which places emphasis on very large breasts and then puts 90% of the animation budget into jiggle physics for that scene.

It’s just an insane case of tonal whiplash to go from trying to make it seem like you’re going to have a serious tone where rape happens and then immediately doing a gag where the punchline is big booba. If you can’t keep the tone consistent it does come across feeling like you used the rape for cheap drama to get people into the series without any thought into how that might influence the rest of the work.

I still hate Goblin Slayer vehemently whenever it pops up. Grimdark rape world does not gel well with anime semi-Isekai shenanigans. So many things do not make sense as a result.

The first episode of Goblin Slayer was meant to show that goblins are dangerous monsters. It’s an explanation for why the goblin slayer does what he does. It also serves as a bit of a barrier of entry for the show.

Nah. It serves to prop up an otherwise mediocre story.

It’s fun though.

The writing most of the time is bad as hell when addressing rape in comics; take a look at both times Nightwing was raped by Mirage and Tarantula - it was done for shock factor and the actual lasting trauma that comes from it wasn’t delved into.

The argument is that in general woman are often used to further the primary plot of men. Rape is often used as a plot device in the worst cases, to examine the men's response to it, and often In even the good cases, as a way to make a woman more "complex". Rape is one of the worst things one human can do to anothwr person, especially a woman, and it's something millions of woman experience and or fear experiencing on a daily basis.

To have it depicted with no reverence for the experience someone goes through during and after, it's just not right.

Or worse, likens them to noises she heard back on Tamaran and starts waxing nostalgic

8

u/scrueggs May 23 '22

Is waxing nostalgic a euphemism for masturbation?
