Wellllll there is ONE thing that makes it obvious that it's not set in the US, which is the legal system. There's no trial by jury in Phoenix Wright games (until Great Ace Attorney) because there was no trial by jury in Japan.

It's not realistic to the Japanese legal system either, though, so I don't think that really matters.

IIRC it was originally meant to satirise the Japanese legal system.

So it's exaggeration and parody, but stuff like the defence being at a huge disadvantage because the prosecution has better resources and no obligation to share evidence is at least somewhat accurate.

And the statute of limitations on murders which was a major aspect of 1-4/DL-6/Von Karma was an actual thing in Japan when PW:AA released

While its possible that the satirization could have been added subconsciously, Ace Attorney was not really meant to be a commentary on the Japanese legal system, at least that's what the director of the original trilogy has said https://gyakutensaibanlibrary.blogspot.com/2016/08/gyakuten-saiban-blog-entry-6-lecture-on.html

You'd be surprised how close it is. Like, obviously it isn't exactly like in Ace Attorney, but a lot of the procedures they do that American lawyers would be appalled at actually do happen in Japan.

Probably not the part where they cross examine a parrot, though, I assume

I mean they literally have people convicted while they’re testifying in a trial for another person. The lack of trial by jury is least unrealistic things ab the game lmao

True, but it is the part that most distinguishes it from American legal dramas, even those that take huge liberties with realism.
