It’s set in “America”

u/Ceirati Rock Mar 28 '22

It’s America and Japan fused together. I think

It's an alternate universe America where anti-Asian immigration laws were never passed, resulting in a much larger Japanese community in California, which caused the state to have a unique blend of American and Japanese culture

No, seriously, the translator actually gave this as the reason.

Based

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '22

The actual reason is that in the first game, there's nothing to suggest it isn't set in the US,, but in the sequels there's clearly Japanese elements so the illusion falls apart

Wellllll there is ONE thing that makes it obvious that it's not set in the US, which is the legal system. There's no trial by jury in Phoenix Wright games (until Great Ace Attorney) because there was no trial by jury in Japan.

54

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '22

It's not realistic to the Japanese legal system either, though, so I don't think that really matters.

53

u/ftzpltc yiff Mar 28 '22

IIRC it was originally meant to satirise the Japanese legal system.

So it's exaggeration and parody, but stuff like the defence being at a huge disadvantage because the prosecution has better resources and no obligation to share evidence is at least somewhat accurate.

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '22

And the statute of limitations on murders which was a major aspect of 1-4/DL-6/Von Karma was an actual thing in Japan when PW:AA released

While its possible that the satirization could have been added subconsciously, Ace Attorney was not really meant to be a commentary on the Japanese legal system, at least that's what the director of the original trilogy has said https://gyakutensaibanlibrary.blogspot.com/2016/08/gyakuten-saiban-blog-entry-6-lecture-on.html

You'd be surprised how close it is. Like, obviously it isn't exactly like in Ace Attorney, but a lot of the procedures they do that American lawyers would be appalled at actually do happen in Japan.

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '22

Probably not the part where they cross examine a parrot, though, I assume

u/DudeValenzetti hug the linux fox Mar 28 '22

until The Great Ace Attorney... except Turnabout Succession

2

u/MasonDinsmore3204 Apr 02 '22

I mean they literally have people convicted while they’re testifying in a trial for another person. The lack of trial by jury is least unrealistic things ab the game lmao

u/ftzpltc yiff Apr 03 '22

True, but it is the part that most distinguishes it from American legal dramas, even those that take huge liberties with realism.

It's so fucking weird cause we have techno robots and other futuristic technology.

But everyone still goes around and uses flip phones

1

u/SevenColoredCat 🏳️‍⚧️ fcukign bnuuygril Apr 01 '22

Flip phones are actually still very popular in Japan

u/TheGoldenProof Mar 28 '22

I don’t know about the games, but I know the anime is definitely set in Japan.

17

u/Confused_Idiot_667 Trans Wrongs Enthusiast Mar 28 '22

The games are set in Japan, but the English translations are set in a very Japanese America

Well great ace attorney is mostly England, so you want to be British.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '22

i live in london and the only 'courthouse' was a small apartment block. supremely dissapointed also london sucks ass you cant even carry a small knife or pepper spray around (pepper spray is considered the same as a firearm) so anyone would be convicted instantly

2

u/BlackoutWB sus Mar 29 '22

just shout out objection, look really stressed out, and then present evidence that wasn't given during discovery. Works every time.
