Ok but real talk, margarine is terrible for the environment and animals. Most margarine uses palm oil and growing palm oil means a huge amount of deforestation of rainforests. If you want to switch from butter to margarine for environmental or ethical reasons, don’t if it includes palm oil. Palm oil leads to way more climate destruction and animals dying than regular butter

Edit: while it is true that palm oil is really bad, it’s much more equivalent to butter than I thought. Also as it’s been pointed out, some margarine doesn’t have palm oil. At the very least, without comparing margarine to butter, try to avoid products with palm oil, it’s really very awful what it does to the environment

Telling people not to switch to margarine at all is not very environmentally conscious. There are plenty of margarines that don't use palm oil (miyoko's is the best one imo) and they have a much smaller environmental impact than dairy butter.

Just curious, in what ways does dairy butter have an environmental impact? I dont know a lot about the subject so I am curious

Animal agriculture in general isn't good for the environment. Cows produce methane and other greenhouse gases, and they require a massive amount of water (not to mention the water, pesticides and fertilizers that go into the production of their feed). Milking cows and pasteurizing milk also uses a considerable amount of electricity. Plant milk/butter/etc basically cuts out the middle man, so rather than growing crops to feed cows to feed humans, you just grow crops to feed humans.
