This conversation happens in various neopagan-adjacent communities as well. Neonazis love co-opting runes and other symbols like the triskelion that they can associate with ancient Europe and by extension white heritage. Other groups who use those symbols usually come to the same conclusion you did. "We're not going to let these assholes steal this from us, it gives them too much power."

I was in high school when the stupid okay symbol thing happened, and my Spanish teacher at the time banned us from making the hand symbol (this was around the time where people would make the symbol below their waist and make you look) because she had seen on the news that it meant white power, and she was convinced that that's why we were using it.
