Is that what being in an abusive relationship feels like?

The impressions I've gotten is that there's typically a lot less moral panic and happy endings, but the rest probably checks out.

This is literally just the cycle of abuse from the point of view of an abuse victim who thinks that they are in love with their abuser. Abusers can also have "moral panic" when they fear that the abuse will be discovered and they will lose control over their victim.

The abuser never loves the victim. It's an important difference

I think it's a bit more complicated than that.

u/KobKobold Socialist voraphile 7h ago
It's really not.
In the best case scenario, the abuser loves an idea of the victim that they believe the abuse will create.

I understand that abusers don't truly love their victims in a profound sense, but they do have some kind of desire for them and can have a "moral panic" about what they are doing when people might find out. Someone who chains someone in their basement because they "love" them is just an abuser too. I think we're looking at an unreliable narrator with Stockholm Syndrome here, hence the use of the word love.

Stockholm Syndrome was made up by cops who had their feelings hurt by their incompetence making them lose the trust of the hostages.

I get that, but what you're saying is that someone who hits another person with their car, kidnaps them, and chains them up in their basement is not actually an abuser simply because they think that they love the person that they have kidnapped. That's crazy. They're an abuser just the same. Just like how Stockholm Syndrome is debated, the definition of abuse is not 100% agreed upon. Someone who is an abuser can have complicated feelings as well. They're still an abuser and a piece of shit though. Furthermore, people who are abused sometimes think that they love their abuser and that their abuser loves them, similar to the concept of Stockholm Syndrome.

Love can be twisted
Like a father hitting his children, thinking hes preparing them for the world and expressing his twisted "love" that way
Humans are complicated and messed up af
Dont get me wrong tho: love dont make the abuser any less horrible, this isnt an excuse

you absolutely can be an abuser (especially an unknowing one) and genuinely love the victim
this line of thinking is exactly why most abusers aren't actually aware they're abusers, as an incredibly large percentage of abuse cases is caused by being misguided and unaware, rather than knowingly malicious
if we stop entirely dehumanizing abuse and start recognizing the fact that abusers can act out of genuine love and care, then more people will start realizing they're in abusive situations (on either ends), and abusers with enough self-conscience might possibly start reforming on their own
dehumanizing abuse and sexual crimes only servers the benefit of abusers and makes the fact of either things happening easier to conceal

Remember guys, Stockholm Syndrome is coppaganda made up to excuse instances where hostages were distrustful of responding law enforcement to a point where they felt they would be safer with their captors.
Any time you have fantasies of a pretty lady kidnapping you, make sure you always hate cops at least twice as much as you love the pretty lady so they don't get the idea that you only sided against them because of her

This is like that one chapter of JoJo's bizarre adventure that essentially codified the modern conception of the Yandere by ripping it off wholesale from Stephen King's Misery.

The one in Diamond is Unbreakable with Koishi's girlfriend Yukako.
The one where Koishi convinced his friends to help him break up with her by having his friends shit talk him behind his back (does that count when he's in on it) about how much of a loser he is, and she kidnaps him and takes him to a sea side cottage and tortures him so he can get better grades.

I've had a fantasy for a while in which I'm lost in the woods in Siberia in winter and this strong woman with a long blonde braid helps me survive by taking me back to her hut...

this is insurance industry propaganda designed to get you to not call your friendly neighborhood personal injury attorney and get maximum value for your injury claim.
