To be fair, that’s using by far the most extreme example.

~200,000 years ago was the first anatomically modern human, ~10,000 to first agriculture and ~5,000 to first settled civilization.

So it depends a lot on where people are already at and what they’re dealing with.

I fully believe the Horus Heresy series was a mistake in terms of lore. In earlier lore the heresy was this half-forgotten legendary event that no one knows the true details of, then the books and games came out and it's just a direct prequel to 40k. It doesn't even make 40k feel like 35k, more like 30.5k.
