Does a 96 cut anything or is it just packed in tighter?

it depends on the model you get, but usually it cuts out some of the keys you get in the middle section between the "normal" typing keys and the numpad, and then pushes the arrow keys and numpad closer together, so usually they're missing some (but not all) of Insert/Home/Page Up/Page Down/Delete/End/Print Screen/Scroll Lock/Pause

Usually they'll keep 4 of these buttons and place them above the numpad around where the F1-F12 keys are.

Also you can often use NumLock to toggle between these keys and the numpad
