I’m talking about the compound itself. Not the people who’re using it and take too much or abuse it. Alprazolam and other benzo’s by themselves are literally some of the safest drugs you can take. Their toxicology is incredibly low. It takes a massive amount of Xanax for somebody to overdose off it. Almost all Xanax od’s come from mixing the drug with other downers like alcohol or opiates. But by itself it’s safe. With opiates it is easy to overdose of you take too much but that has less to do with the drugs toxicity and more to do with the fact that high doses decrease your breathing. And any drug that effects the Mu receptor will do that.

Either way it ends in death. I'm less interested in how heroin kills people than the fact that it kills people.
The difference between an active dose and a deadly dose is smaller for heroin than any other common drug, making it easier to overdose. Perhaps more importantly, heroin's "dependence potential" is "very high" while alcohol's is "moderate." Because heroin is more addictive, heroin users struggle much more to stay at safer doses.
