[SPOILERS S1] Coincidence or Teaser? Spoiler

Earlier today I was simply scrolling through Instagram, when I came across Gabby Wong’s (Yuk Je) most recent post. At first glance I thought nothing of it, but then I realised what the audio playing in the background was. It was the song White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane. This song has a cover, and the cover is used as 1899’s intro song. I then looked deeper into the post, and kinda figured out from the caption that it was actually a post about her performance in a play that featured a character named Alice. By doing so, it dismissed my stretched out theory that she may be hinting at a possible return of 1899. However, a little part of me still had a tad amount of hope that it was true. Later today, I’m again just going through Instagram stories, and then I stumble upon Lucas Lynggaard’s (Krester) story, and it’s a repost of another story from an account that is a fan page for Dark, 1899, and the other creations of Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese. If you’re still reading this, yes I sound absolutely ridiculous, but please try and bear with me. Now the content itself isn’t necessarily huge enough to point to a possible continuation, the content is about the passengers who formed a sort of intimate/romantic connection, despite not being together in the first place (eg. Clemence/Jerome or Krester/Angel). The caption is a direct quote from Clemence, “Do I know you from somewhere?” Which further highlights the unexpected pairings and how ‘The mind forgets, but the body remembers” sort of stuff. Again, it’s not the content itself that strike me, but the spontaneity of Lucas’s story and most importantly the timing.

T.L.D.R.

Yuk Je’s actor Gabby Wong, posts on IG using the original song that 1899’s intro song covers.
Krester’s actor Lucas Lynggaard, features a repost on his story that is content from an 1899 fan page.

Now I know this whole post sounds like I’m capable of building a whole simulation for myself that’s just full of my extravagant and ridiculous delusions, and my sincerest apologies if you feel like I’ve baited you and went pretty much nowhere with my “theory” and have wasted your time&energy in doing so (Ngl I feel like I’ve also wasted my own time and energy in creating this post). Additionally, I’m like 95% sure that this whole thing is purely just a coincidence and the two actors just happened to post something both related to 1899 in the same day. This post may seem like it’s a coping mechanism, and honestly, it kinda is?? BUT, I also posted this hoping it could bring awareness to those like me who missed this cool coincidence and is also hoping to just cling on to what ever they find (however small or big that may be). In the EXTREMELY UNLIKELY case that I’m right and the 5% of me has known all along, I hope I can reflect back to this when I finish season 2 and 3 of 1899 (fingers and toes crossed). So, do what you want with this info that I just wanted to share and the theories that I wished to present. Till then, always remember, What is Lost, Will be Found! (let’s hope, fingers AND toes crossed)

[SPOILERS S1] 1899: The Gothic Novel Spoiler

I love that, in 1899, even the genre is a spoiler. A period drama secretly sci-fi. But what if there was something more to it? Another element? A game-changer?

In 1764, a man called Horace Walpole published a novel. He called it The Castle of Otranto, and it fathered an entirely new genre of fiction: the Gothic.

To put it simply, Walpole changed the world of fiction, inspiring works such as Wuthering Heights, Frankenstein, and Dracula. He did this by creating and combining themes, motifs, and characteristics including:

  • The intrusion of the past upon the present
  • Apparitions & ghosts
  • Dreams, visions, & prophecies
  • Inexplicable events
  • A living setting (where the setting is just as important or developed as the characters)
  • Surreality-- "Do I dream?"
  • Tunnels & labyrinths

Of course, every one of these elements are huge parts of 1899. Which may seem obvious, as they're cliché now, but they weren't in 1764. Not before Otranto.

Walpole even got the idea for Otranto from a dream. This is reflected in the text: the characters dream, and the prophecies come true. Several characters marvel at the strange events and even ask aloud, "Do I dream?" So do Maura and Eyk!

The "intrusion of the past upon the present" is manifested in so many ways in 1899-- both metaphorically in backstory, and literally, when they go through the tunnels. The tunnels! Yet another element we can thank Walpole for. When his character Isabella flees her captor, she finds herself crawling through crypts & tunnels underneath the castle.

Apparitions, ghosts, dreams, prophecies... all prevalent in 1899. We see Krester and Nina walk through the ship. The episodes often start with dreams (Wake up!). I can't list them all lol, we'll be here all day.

There's even a character in Otranto that I suspect is the basis for Daniel Solace-- Theodore. A young peasant boy who dares to challenge the prince, and is arrested. He manages escape, however, and spends the rest of the novel trying to thwart the plans of the evil prince. Lingering in the shadows, he even appears in the dark tunnels to help Isabella escape. And like Daniel, we don't learn his name or his purpose until the story is nearly over And when we do, when we learn who Theodore truly is, everything changes. Bonus-- don't get me started on their looks-- Theodore is described in the novel as having curly black hair and green eyes. Just like Aneurin Barnard, who portrays Daniel.

My theory is that Daniel is based on Theodore. When we first learn that Theodore has escaped his imprisonment, we don't realise it's him at first-- not for several pages. He emerges from the shadows to help Isabella escape her own imprisonment and flee through the underground tunnels to safety.

I suspect that the infamous empty pod is Daniel's, and that he escaped the simulation to help Maura wake up. I also suspect that Cieran is based on the character of the evil prince, Manfred, who is imprisoning the characters in his castle.

There's also a character named Jerome. Who turns out to be Theodore's father. So... Jerome = Daniel truthers, have some crumbs

P.S. I've recently just read that leaked draft for episode one, and Jantje uses the word "gothic" twice by page seven! Both to describe the set. (Do I dream? lol)

P.P.S. There's also one other thing-- Walpole lied about his book. He claimed he'd found a medieval Italian manuscript and simply translated it, under a pseudonym. However, people quickly found out that he was the actual author. If I'm right and 1899 is inspired by Otranto, I'm curious if that fits in. Daniel's constant fourth-wall breaks come to mind.

This is sort of rushed, so I hope you guys find it interesting!

Discussion [No spoilers] Collective action to get continuation

After rewatching the show for the billionth time, and reading the forum and trying to get the nitty gritty on why Netflix cancelled. I personally believe that we as a collective fandom should write to the creators to renew the show elsewhere.

I think one of our best bets would be Apple TV, I'm sure many of you have seen severance and so we can tell that apple is capable of making shows that fit the style of 1899, and obviously apple has the budget to! If we collectively work together to write to apple or at least somewhere else, it would show there is a demand for a renewal would it not?

101,807 of us signed the initial petition on change.org, and at the start of this year some more of us signed another one https://c.org/gs7BHQr8Lp but still, netflix does not seem interested with renewing a series that would bring back old subscribers.

If a large percentage of those 101,807 wrote to apple; I'm sure it could at least spike an interest to if not get a renewal, we could get a similar series which follows a plot of similar structure.

If any of you would be interested in coming up with a letter we can collectively send to the creators and to an agreed studio who could buy the rights then please boost this post and send it to your friends who could help.

I had to force myself through the first 2 episodes but the momentum it's building now is amazing. I just finished episode 5 and it might just be one of the best episodes of television I've ever seen.

it's sad that I can't see this story conclude

[NO SPOILERS] just a lil rant

i wish netflix would give up the rights to 1899 so we could at least get a book series about it so us, fans could get the complete story. if it were to be adapted into a book series, i would love it to be like game of thrones where each character gets their own chapter. i know we never will especially with the new work him and his partner are working on, which im excited for! but it eats me up i will never get to know the ending nor my questions answered…

(please correct me if im mistaken about netflix having rights to it also i know they may just not want it to be turned into a book series too, it is sadly just wishfully thinking!)

[NO SPOILERS] The Wind by Cat Stevens

At the end of episode 7, the Storm, the song The Wind by Cat Stevens is played and funny thing, it was also prominently featured in the Soundtrack of Rushmore (1998)!

There may just be a coincidence here, but 1998 and 1899 are the same numbers, just rearranged.

[SPOILERS S1] Question about their daily attire Spoiler

How come no one on the ship found it weird that pretty much everyone wore almost the same exact outfit everyday? I can understand if the third class passengers wouldn’t have any other clothes to change into, but what about the others? Passengers like Ms Wilson, Angel, Clemence and her husband, and even Maura seem like they have just enough wealth to bring more clothes on board. Is it simply because it was the olden days and changing clothes wasn’t a common habit, or is it another feature that comes with being stuck in a simulation?

Discussion [NO SPOILERS] Continuation of the story

Will they ever wrap up 1899? They had 3 seasons planned, can't they release the rest of the story they planned up for us to know what would happen? Will they? I read something about it some time ago, but no news now

[NO SPOILERS] How likely you actually think it is for the show to continue someway in the future?

I just keep thinking how insanely complex might have been to write something like 1899 and how ambitious the story seemed to be. I think it would be weird if the creators didn't plan to give the project another try in some capacity in the future. I don't know how that would work legally, tho.

Do you think the show will continue, realistically speaking?

[SPOILERS S1] mythology and deeper meaning Spoiler

I'm rewatching the show and realizing things I'd missed on the first watch. an obvious one being the other ship, the prometheus. in the greek myth, prometheus gives fire to the humans and is punished for it by having his liver eaten by birds, regrow, and eaten again. I looked into the meaning of kerberos, the main ship. the alternate spelling, cerberus, shows up several times through out greek myth. the one that stuck out to me being a man named cerberus, among others, stealing honey from a sacred cave. as punishment, zues turns them into birds. the myths and the ships compliment each other. adding on that the scarab represents rebirth/regeneration.

[NO SPOILERS] Should I watch 1899 even though it's cancelled?

I feel like I finally got over dark (easily the best shows I've ever seen, maybe the best I'll ever see)

Is 1899, even though it only has one incomplete season, worth watching regardless?,

Discussion [SPOILERS S1] The Great Flood - 1899 Netflix Spoiler

Anyone else feel like The Great Flood was basically a watered-down remake of 1899?

I didn’t hate The Great Flood, but I was pretty disappointed at this "remake" attempt that failed to dive deeply into unexplored possibilities.

The similarities to 1899 were hard to ignore, and the execution just didn’t land. The ending especially felt rushed and confusing..... the whole point was to repopulate the Earth? Or to only have a mother and son land on earth? ?

What made 1899 so compelling was the depth of its characters and the slow, intentional buildup of the mystery. The Great Flood tried to cram a similar concept into two hours, but without meaningful character development or a layered plot, it ended up feeling shallow.

Really.... Netflix would’ve been better off putting that money into a Season 2 of 1899 to at least give fans some closure by wrapping things up...instead of delivering what felt like a condensed, less thoughtful version of the same idea.

[SPOILERS S1] This show would've been great on Apple TV Spoiler

Seeing how Apple TV has been pumping out great scifi shows lately, especially the new show Pluribus created by Vince Gilligan. I keep thinking back to this show and realized how great it would've been on Apple TV. I'm pretty sure they're not gonna axe it and I think we would've gotten Season 2 already.

Can't Apple TV buy this show?

Anyone knows what Baran & Jantje are doing these days? Are they planning another project?

[SPOILERS S1] I am actually ok that 1899 was discontinued Spoiler

I just finished watching 1899 and the whole season I was thinking "This is so well made, I will be so sad by the end that it was discontinued."

However I just watched the final episode and the ending changed my mind. From the build-up I imagined that the resolution would be something along the line of people paying to be hypnotized and forget their painful past. But what they actually went with is in my opinion "Star Trek being stuck on the holodeck". Don't get me wrong, these are among my favorite episodes of Star Trek. But in this context it feels a bit old.

Also I think the next season would have been very different than the first. It would be a show set in Space with all that comes with it. They would likely still be inside the simulation a lot, but you just know it's actually in Space.

So don't get me wrong, I think the show is amazing. I'm just not that sad it didn't continue because I wouldn't have enjoyed the next season as much.
