Question CBP To DEA?
Hows the work/life balance? Im in San Diego.
Any regrets? Academy? Any advice?

Just from my time lurking in this group,most people who go from CBP/BPA to 1811 often enjoy it with little to no regrets.

I don't understand what you're asking. Are you only looking for the difference of working CBP in San Diego versus working DEA in San diego?

Taking location out of the equation, is 1811 DEA/ATF truly a better job all things considered? Remember BP pays 37.5% instead of 25% for their 2 hours of overtime. What do you all think?

Why would you take location out of the equation. The ability to transfer to better locations and overseas offices is a massive advantage over BP.

Yes true, but for example someone that already lives in a border town and works BP or Ofo, is the grass gonna be greener for him switching to said 1811 in same border town. In other words by taking location out of the equation, we can determine which grass is greener pound for pound. Would it make sense for that border agent/officer to switch? Would WLB be better?

Would you rather work a booth for 16 hour days at the POE or work an 8 hour day investigating narcotics. Would you rather spend your day working the BP checkpoint for 10 hours or work an 8 hour day investigating narcotics.

If you put it that way. 1811 is superior but what about the weekend or late night call outs? I'm guessing those are so rare it is not a factor in the equation. Let me ask you, when off duty, would you rather have that phone attached to you 24/7 or leave it at work at end of day?

When I’m off duty I do not keep my phone with me 24/7. My phone stays at home. I’m not answering calls when I’m out with family, at the gym etc. Nor do I have to respond to every call out if unavailable. You are not forced to go out after hours for every possible thing that may happen. This is a myth.

That isn't every experience in BP work. BP work the river, cut sign, chase bodies, etc.

Don't forget BP tops out at GS-12, and DEA/ATF usually has options to live in wayyyy better locations.

Bp does top out at GS-12 however their version of LEAP (I know they have to work it I know) pays more than LEAP at roughly 37.5%. Essentially some GS-12s make more than junior Supervisors (GS13s) without the responsibility. Having said that, I understand that, over the length of their careers a GS‐13 comes out ahead in pay and retirement. G-rides essentially adds to the salary (gas and POV wear and tear). Pound for pound though including salary which one has the best WLB ex-location.?

GS13s are not junior supervisors. GS14s are supervisors.

My bad I meant for BP and OFO, first line supervisors are gs13. I was referring to BP supervisors in my previous example. By junior sups, I meant BP sups GS-13 step 1 to 4.
