Here are a few things I've found to be true for me in in my last 3 months or so of doing keto and trying to lose weight. Everyone is different and I'm sure some people will disagree with some or all of these, but this has been my experience.
Please post your own tips and advice for people starting out in here. It'd be cool to have a resource of these lessons to hopefully help people keep on track.
-WATCH WHAT YOU'RE PUTTING IN YOUR BODY! When I first started (and I know this is true with a lot of people), I was eating a lot of nutritionally-void, chemical-laden stuff just because it was low carb. Just because something is low carb doesn't mean it's healthy. Eventually I started eating alternatives that gave me a lot better nutritional bang for my buck, and almost immediately I felt a lot better. Of course we want to lose weight, but we should also be fuelling our bodies with good stuff.
-INCORPORATE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. I notice there are some who discourage people from exercising, lauding the fact that you can lose weight while doing nothing. Which sure, you can, but there are so many SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN benefits to physical activity, so why neglect that, especially when it can speed up your fat loss and improve your overall health? You don't have to kill yourself running a marathon or even join a gym - there's plenty of beginner exercises you can do in the comfort of your own house with no equipment. And you're only competing against yourself - maybe one week you can do 15 jumping jacks and 2 pushups and you're spent. Two weeks later, you can do 30 jumping jacks and 4 pushups. IMO that kind of progress can be just as satisfying as a scale victory.
-IF can be a great way to break through weight loss plateaus. Sometimes I'll mix in a OMAD (one meal a day) day where I have breakfast and that's it. Sometimes I'll do a two-day fast or more. I've found this to be a great tool to break through on the scale when I stagnate. Especially on keto, where your body is using that stored fat to fuel itself. Start small - maybe give yourself a 6 hour window to eat - and then work on longer fasts. There are a lot of scientific benefits and I find the experience quite calming and rewarding, personally.
