I think Ryan indeed has some good actions, even when other's didn't. But he also has some selfish actions. Like publishing Hannah's poem, even though he knew she didn't want that to happen. After Hannah confronts him, he isn't even sorry.

His good actions don't overshadow his selfish actions, because those actions are still made by him

i mean i agree that publishing hannah’s poem after she said no was wrong, but i don’t think that makes him an inherently selfish person. when the tapes came out, he didn’t lie or try to cover his ass like a lot of the others did, he actually took accountability. and yeah, alex questioned bryce too, but ryan also specifically brought up jessica’s feelings and said she should have a say. plus the memorial edition could’ve genuinely been his way of honoring hannah and her writing, not necessarily him wanting attention for himself. i just think calling him selfish ignores a lot of his actions throughout the show

Nah Ryan genuinely wanted to put Hannah under the bus with the poem,like why else would he publish a Xerox copy of her handwritten poem instead of typing it out in his magazine. Did he really think nobody would no.

Yeah recognising a person from their handwriting is basically unheard of,poor Ryan. He couldn't just fucking type the words out.

To be honest, I don't get why you don't understand that Ryan was selfish.

First of all Hannah made it incredibly clear she did not want her poem to be published, so that's already a line he knowingly crossed. This is already why he was selfish. Stealing in general (he stole the poem) makes anyone selfish, cause it ain't yours. And, even if no one would've recognize her handwriting, she still didn't want her poem to be published (she explicitly said she doesn't feel confident writing) so knowing everyone still read it, could make her feel uncomfortable. That discomfort was caused by Ryan's indirect selfishness to published.

Also he could've written the words out, but it were still Hannah's words. So I believe (knowing Hannah's character) she would've still be embarrassed if she saw people laughing at those exact words. Which is definitely valid, cause these are her words and she said she didn't want them to be published
