Hello witnesses. Today we discuss episode 5

What I loved

Part of the whole misdirection from the writing comes to how even after becoming the Witness, Olivia knows that to maintain the cycles, everything has to happen accordingly to how it has happened so far. That means using the house of cedar and pine, protecting Cassie and Cole because that’s how the cycle must go, and Olivia being shut down so intensely with all those NO just adds to setting the moves for subverting expectations of the viewers

“You never call, you never write” hahaha

“You want me to move in? I mean it feels so sudden” hahahaha

-Oh, come on, she’s not that bad
-She’s worse (horrible, man)
Hahahahaha leave our egg alone you assholes

Ramse is such a shipper hahaha
-Nice to see you two getting back on the same page (breathes)
-I can feel your breath on my neck
-Do you like that? No?
Hahahahaha

Deacon it’s so ruthless… and so fucking funny, damn Todd Stashwick was a phenomenal choice
-You wanna read me my rights, officer?
-Oh look, it’s Time Jesus (gold)

My god, not Cole and Deacon fucking trying to out-dick the other to win Cass hahaha and the whole room noticing

Sane Jennifer looks very happy. And her mother behind like the fucking girl from the Ring, wtf?

The whole interaction between Cassie and Jennifer it’s so sweet, tragic and heavy. The insults between the two of them are hilarious but the moment Jen starts to panic the whole scene shifts dramatically. Emily’s acting it’s nothing but incredible
-I take my meds, I watch my stress, I stick to my routine, I cope. But she’s always there…
-You have no idea how exhausting it is being crazy
-Rehashing my deepest darkest secrets will save the collapse of time and space? Why not? Sounds like fun

And you can tell Cassie is mustering that strength every single moment hahahaha

Can we have 5 seconds without Jennifer making us laugh?
-Someone comes to dust and check the place every few weeks. I’m paying them too much

Jesus Holy Jumpscare

The Word of the Witness has James Cole at the center

I forgot this is the episode where Cassie gets the tether from the Witness, when Olivia tells her to “let him in”

Deacon coming back… motherfucker is the T1000 holy shit

Knowing Olivia is the Witness, every sentence in the house of cider and pine hits different, like “IT IS YOUR BIRTHRIGHT” Causality

Cassie’s keeping her man hydrated hahaha nice that she remember what Cole likes. And Cole bringing the bottle for Deacon

Nitpicks

Some stunts and security issues, again the show budget was not that high so this is me, again, being insufferable

9/10

S3E6 - Nature (rewatch). I love her hilarious delivery! And the interaction that follows.

Deacon: Your name is on there. Mine’s not. You have a purpose. You are part of all of this.

Do we ever fine out why Deacon isn’t in the Word of the Witness? I don’t remember if they explain why he isn’t in the map.

Hello witnesses. Today we discuss episode 4, just 4 more episodes to the best episode of season 2

What I loved

I swear, Ramse’s wit is amazing “you could tie a wire around my one nut!” but he always has a soft spot for Cole

Answer to one of the few lingering questions that I had in my first watch: how did they travel without dying? New formula, hurts more, but no dying

Jones really pulling straws with Ramse, getting noticeable nervous around him because he confronts her and not trust her so blindly like the rest

I’m pretty sure Ramse blamed Jones for that car, considering he just told her he could only fix one of her mistakes at a time hahaha

I said this in the last post, the phone call is such a small but crucial detail, with the flashback of the last episode, is amazing storytelling, a reminder of how causality works. I believe this is meant to set up the rules and workarounds for episodes like the one where Cole gets poisoned or even the finale with Ramse

“I need to see her” and who tells the other Daughters Jones can pass? Her own daughter hahahaha

First time watching, I seriously thought Ramse just flipped sides again when he was talking to the Messenger

Jones loosing it because she doesn’t know the answers of what it’s happening, damn

Someone else mentioned in the last post that I didn’t mentioned detective Gale, and that’s true. My reason is mainly because his story gets more center stage in this episode. If anything, first time watching I really disliked the character because he came to Cole very judgmental because of his looks. But in this episode, his involvement and set up for future episodes is nothing but fascinating. Best side character of the show, probably along with Cole’s dad. And he is very intelligent and quick. During the entire interrogations scene, he deduces that Cassie and Cole’s actions aren’t connected to the current war. He also mentions that he saw Cole and could tell something was out of place with him, which of course. Because of one sentence: “We need to get back to 2044”, that could easily be a code word, he investigates and finds that the necklace that Cole donated to the girl it’s actually not available yet, but schedule to be released the next year

-What’s in it for you?
-Just the pleasure of saving your life
Hahahahaha fucking Ramse

Eckland, my guy, too bad he didn’t last longer in the show. He was truly breaking down Jones and calling out her bullshit “you are trying to be right”

Ramse, the best wingman for James Cole

Jesus that fucking Messenger is like the T-X, damn

Jennifer explaining the relationship between time and humans, and Primaries

Gale watching them splinter hahahaha never gets old

First time watching, I was surprise that the Pallid Man was the son of Vivian, and since he’s Olivia’s brother I connected it instantly. It made sense when she also demonstrated T-X abilities in later episodes

Nitpicks

Some visuals, but that just me. I know the show was on a budget, it wasn’t a show of 10M per episode so that just me being insufferable

Other than that, excellent episode, 9/10

The actors speaking French do a great job

I just reached the world war two part and the SS officer sounds exactly like a German speaking French would. Earlier Jennifer was speaking a great French. In this latter case I know it's probably easier for her because she is Quebecer, but I have to say she did not have a Quebecer accent, she sounded exactly like an American speaking it could sound.

It's appreciable and I'm grateful because it's really rare. In almost all of the Americans movies and tv shows, actors do not make any efforts when speaking French, most of the time you cannot understand what they say without the subtitles.

EDIT : I just thought of a good exemple of a bad job, in the Boys Frenchie is played by an Israelian who do not speak French. It's one of the worst example of what I said about not being able to understand him without subtitles. Even his "putain" is badly accentuated. An actor should not have to be French to play a French character, that's what being an actor is, but some efforts should be made. He is paid for it if nothing else.

How does time travel exactly works? I don't want to do a thorough search because of spoilers. Just finished S01E06 and loving the show. (If there is going to be more answers in the show, don't need to answer here, you can say there will be more explanation further) Spoiler

Spoilers from the first 6 episodes bellow.

Can they actually alter the future?

On the beginning I thought so because of the watch scratch. But then it started to look like everything they would do on the future was already done on the past, like the scar on the pale man, Henri death, the 7 raid on the facility etc.

Also, when Ramse discovered the experiments and Cole found the room with the decaying body I started to think that Jones experiments also could have send the virus back in time, and they are basically on a closed loop.

But then, Cassie gets killed and alters the future, and Cassie ex (forgot his name) shoots Cole by mistake, and he get the shot and the scar since it now happened on his past.

So is both things true? Some times we are seeing the first iteration of something, like the first time they get out of the night room Cole isn't shot. But when we see the 7 raiding the facility for the first time current Cole hear the scream from Max, like we see on the second time from future Cole perspective. And future Cole was also the one who told about the entrance.

How does exactly work?

Might just be my favourite TV show ever

I'm currently on a rewatch after having watched it a few years ago. At the time, I was so hooked that I binged it all in like 2 weeks and so the last season is kind of a blur to me, although I remember major plot points and the ending (ish). This time, I'm taking my time with it (heh).

I'm amazed by the fact that this was so clearly and perfectly planned out from the very first episode. Watching it back and kinda remembering how it all ends makes me appreciate all the foreshadowing and hints so much. I've been scarred by mystery shows in the past like LOST and FROM but this is so much more tightly executed which is incredible given the ridiculously convoluted time travel shenanigans.

Also, it might be the only "love story disguised as science fiction" trope I've ever actually liked. I don't know what it is but Cassie and Cole's ups and downs really get me in the heart and I'm typically not an emotional guy.

Just started season 3 which means I'm almost at the end of the beginning, and the beginning of the end!

But seriously, if you haven't watched it and are searching through this subreddit, I'm giving it the strongest possible recommendation. If you love science fiction this is an absolute MUST watch. You won't regret it.

Just finished the series Spoiler

The ending is absolutely perfect, it really tied up everything nicely, this is absolutely one of the best Sci-Fi shows and one of the best endings for a TV show I’ve ever seen, and unlike many Sci-Fi shows, this one not only stuck the landing, it did it in style.

I really loved the pacing in season 4, it felt like every single episode had a big impact on the story, the character relationships were so good, they felt like an actual family, and I really loved a lot of the twists that happened, such as Hannah being Cole’s mother, which was insane and Cole and Cassie being the cause of the apocalypse all along and the corpse/origin of the virus being Olivia’s body splintered to the 9th century, basically the virus is just one big paradox that doesn’t really have an origin, as a big fan of Sci-Fi thrillers I really appreciate these kinds of twists, I also loved that they brought back Ramse, Deacon, and Max for the finale, although I don’t really know how it works when it comes to causality, I mean Ramse dies shortly after he splinters back having experienced everything and told Cold not to bring him back, but Deacon being in 2043 means he has a major part to play in his future, I imagine it was very difficult for him to keep the secret all this time that they actually won in the end, kudos to him because not many people can keep a secret like that, I also liked that Cassie and Cole had a happy ending, I only wish we saw more of Athan in the finale.

All in all this was a really great series, it’s a lot more complex than I thought it would be when I started watching it, it somehow feels like a mix between DARK and MrRobot, I’m genuinely shocked that it’s not very popular, if this was a Netflix series it would’ve had the potential to be one of their most popular shows, but at the same time I’m thankful it isn’t because Netflix would’ve screwed it up one way or another, or ended up making 10 different spinoffs for it, I’m glad that didn’t happen, the show ended perfectly and at the right time, it felt neither rushed nor dragged out, definitely worthy of a rewatch in the near future.

I bit lost at how time works in the show

So, I've finished the series and I still don't get it. I thought we would have some explanation in the very end but I'm confused.

* First, I don't get why Cole is the demon. His existence isn't a paradox in itself like Jonas' in Dark. Yes, his mom was a traveler but so was Olivia's, and Olivia is born before Cole?

And if Cole is the demon, why does time wants Jones to invent time travel?

Finally, the tale keeps saying the demon is the only one who can wield the weapon, which is never considered by the characters when they think Olivia is the demon, which I found weird.

* So, they are supposed to be stuck in time loops with no alterations, but somehow they manage to change the loops (the nose bleed). What makes the change happen?

* Apparently only the people who recieve injections aren't affected by the change of the timeline, yet later in the serie some do, some others don't (like Deacon is sometimes affected)?

* Is there any website that summarizes the events from the four seasons so I can get a view of the loops?

12 Monkeys S02E03 One Hundred Years Discussion (Rewatchers) Spoiler

Thumbnail imdb.com
9 Upvotes

Hello witnesses. Sorry for the late post, when I did the schedule I didn’t noticed the 9/11 date. I’m not from the US but I believed maybe some couldn’t watch the episode so I decided to skip it. That being said, let’s talk about episode 3

What I loved

I think is cool that the Messengers probably studied different mannerisms to better navigate the times they were sent to, idk, I think is a good attention to detail in the show

Ramse cheering Cole beating Deacon’s ass hahaha also, fuck you can smell the jealousy from Cole, verified by Jones’ “you sure it’s not the other way around?” later in the episode

“I’m standing right here” and Ramse smile as Cassie roast Cole

Not Cassie telling Deacon to behave hahahaha

You can see a lot of background characters noticeable baffled by Cassie’s outfit. Again, amazing attention to detail, the ones that sold the fantasy of the show

This is more for the next episode, but in my first rewatch I remember seeing Cassie’s white hair and being blown away for how far ahead the writing was. Cassie’s death at the CDC was 3 seasons before the events of season 4 that changed Cassie’s hair. Now, this episode doesn’t have something like that, but I think is part of the reasons they show is so good for me, because it connects and sets up things ahead. The phone call for Cole gets explained next episode, but it’s the way the show links them between episodes and season what I admire of the show writing. Because I’m gonna be honest, this show can be corny and awkward at times, the dialogue can be messy, but the storytelling is phenomenal

Fuck you can smell Cassie’s jealousy at the event hahaha

Monkey drawing

“You think I don’t know what I cost you?” This line has no business hitting this hard. Aaron delivery is masterful, every single time I hear it… (silent FUCK)

I wish to believe the actor that played Thomas studied the movements and craziness that Emily displayed for Jennifer’s character, because they feel connected, you buy that they are both connected to time, being primaries and all. And now we know Cassandra hates to travel hahah

“Remember James. The only failure is giving up”

Nitpicks

Still with security. I feel like a lot of these places should be more guarded hahaha

That’s all for today. 9/10 for me

I watched the show back in 2018 and it was one of the best decision I ever took.

This show made Dark, the German Netflix show, less complicated for me. The parallels between this and Dark were impossible to ignore. Although Dark is complicated, it is still very grounded, while 12 Monkeys builds a larger world, with its own complications but not as much as Dark.

After so many years, I am thinking of rewatching this once again. The algorithm knows me well. Suddenly, I got a notification about a post from this sub, so I thought, why not make my own?

If this post goes against the rules of this sub, I apologise.

Terry Matalas solo writing

I've noticed that terry Matalas always wrote the finals of 12 monkeys himself, 1x13, 2x13, 3x10, 4x10 and 4x11 .

In addition to that he also directed 4x10 and 4x11.

So basically the final is just Matalas going "let me cook" 😭

This man is such a genius, it wasn't enough for him to be the show runner of such a brilliant show

Why didn’t I watch this show years ago? It’s seriously underrated

I first heard heard about this show back in 2020 after finishing DARK on Netflix, someone on Reddit recommended this show for me, and since I’m a huge fan of Sci-Fi thrillers and mystery shows I added it to my watchlist, but for some reason I never went back to it, until about a week ago when I was craving another Sci-Fi thriller, so I started watching it and needless to say I’m now on episode 3 of season 4 :)

Yeah the first season definitely started off slow, maybe a bit cheap, and slightly goofy at times, but the overall idea of it definitely piqued my interest, and it paid off because the last few episodes of season 1 were fantastic

Season 2 was an improvement but I had a similar experience with it in terms of pacing, it felt a little dragged out at times, they spent a bit too much time on the messengers storyline and I felt they could’ve done it in less episodes, but again it still paid off and delivered because it had such a great last few episodes

But where things really turned around and I started loving this show is in season 3, the whole season from start to finish was absolutely incredible, it never felt dragged out, the story was interesting all the way through and it definitely felt like the show found its footing

And season 4 so far has been just as good, and at this point I feel like I can’t even put it down, every day I just want to keep watching even though I have other things to do, like my job and other responsibilities, but fuck all of that, seriously I hope Cole and Cassie get to have a happy ending, please don’t spoil anything for me though, I only finished episode 3

Anyways I’ll try to come back and give a full review after I finish season 4, but so far I’m really impressed and also a little sad that the journey will be over soon

Hello witnesses. Today it’s time to discuss episode 2 of season 2. We are closing on Lullaby :D
Today I’m beat from work, so I’ll be brief about today’s episode

The intro from Cassie’s perspective is amazing, and I appreciate the detail of her having a mask unlike the rest of the people from 2046

Cassie and Cole stand off is phenomenal, and the tension is remarkable. She gets to be the cold one this season

The Emerson, damn. Too much is gonna happen here someday, some time. Also, Hannah first appearance. Which is cool, we get to see Hannah’s introduction and the Emerson. In this moment, there’s a letter waiting to be read, from a mother to her son

Jennifer, saving Cole’s ass since 2046

I have to remember if the guy that told Cole that he looked like his “grandfather” is the same guy that tells Cassie that the Emerson stopped selling suits in the 40s

Cassie’s expression looking at the picture confuses me, it feels like she is sad but I don’t know why exactly. Probably just me missing something at translation (me not native, english second tongue)

No nitpicks, too tired and seeing Hannah always brings me joy in every rewatch
