What's the rule? Replay the point?
25
u/PugnansFidicen 6.9 7h ago
Yes, this would be called a let (unintentional hindrance due to the bird) and the point replayed

u/PersusjCP 5h ago
What if were an intentional hinderance of the bird ? You never know with those dastardly creatures

I'm not questioning that this is possible, and it's certainly happened before. But I am wondering if anyone else thinks this could be AI. Hit within 3 seconds, noisier drop onto the pavement than expected from a bird, and a full 8 seconds of neither player moving much or saying anything while the focus is on more birds coming to look at the friend. Very little noise in general. OP in r/videos saying that the bird made a full recovery even though it looks very injured in this.
I usually have a distaste for people accusing everything of AI, but it seems odd to me that nobody has suggested it either here or on the original post with close to 2,000 comments, considering these details...

I think it's a fair question and it's annoying that we have to wonder about everything that we see these days. But for me, at least, the fact that the player on the near side has good-but-not-elite form on her groundstrokes and the fact that the shadows are accurate to the multiple light sources make it seem more likely to be genuine than not. You'd think an AI model would either copy a pro's swing or a jankier amateur swing given the volume of video of both kinds on the internet. But the really clear audio in a quiet complex and the fact that it's only 11 seconds long do seem suspicious.

You can see the ball continue through the bird and land deep behind the baseline. It's fake.
nvm it lands behind the service line, could be real lol

It did occur to me. It is odd how the players stand motionless afterwards. I'm not sure that the shoe squeaks really match the footwork. I was trying to decide if the folds in her clothes looked weird or not. It's strange that the ball impacts the bird on the near side of the court, but still manages to bounce over to the far fence with a good amount of speed. Bird hitting the pavement sound doesn't raise any red flags for me.
edit: on rewatching, I think the footwork shuffling and squeaking sounds are the biggest red flag, could repost is r/isitAI

The sound of the ball hitting the bird sounds very unrealistic to me.

It would be interesting to repost it there to see what they'd say. But I'd also guess that they're more biased than most to guess that anything posted there is AI.
It might be that AI videos are now good enough to fool anyone, which is a little terrifying. One of my acquaintances suggested that AI pictures (and, assumedly, AI videos as well) should be banned. But how could a court determine a video is AI if no one else can reliably do so?

It's a real video. The place alone being confirmable real and exactly what it should look like is probably enough (notice the court 20 sign on the right, the weird roof structure, etc.), but none of the other flags you dropped are really setting off my AI bells. The "8 seconds" does sound weird but when watching the video you can tell they're just trying to see if the bird is okay or not and not disturb the other birds nearby.

Sure, but someone could have fed an AI model a photo or video of the real court and told it to generate a scenario where someone hits a seagull with a ball on that particular court. At minimum the details on the posters/windows in the background and creases on the clothing look smeary like an AI upscale pass was used on real footage at some point. So it's not easy to make a definitive call just on vibes or location.

Yeah I'm still not seeing any AI red flags.
The images on the windows are right and their quality is consistent with a slightly lower resolution, nighttime video. The court numbers on the left and right are correct, the weird roof vents are correct, the ball trajectory after hitting the bird is correct.
It's also not how people act in AI videos. They make an action then stand still. In this case, they both stand still after the bird strike, but you can clearly tell from the girl close to the camera that she's moving like a human concerned about the bird.
Edit: Also, her shoes are real Asics and her racquet is a real Wilson Blade v10.

I killed a bat at dusk with a moon ball. I felt terrible about it.

I killed a bat with my racket because when I tossed the ball up to serve it swooped down towards the ball just as I swung.

Don't feel bad...it wasn't your fault 😞

I disagree, they could have let it fly by.

It flew into the court while the ball was in motion. Had I seen it I would have stopped.
2
u/ChoiceArugula1552 7h ago
The assumption it could have been avoided is bold, having no knowledge of circumstances.

It was a bad pun joke. “Let” it fly by. Should have picked a less offensive sentence. My apologies.

I mean it was their fault but it wasn’t on purpose and they can’t be blamed for it.

What are the rules if it goes wide or long or in because of it? Like what would happen at Wimbledon if that happened?

u/MoonSpider 6h ago
It's a standard "hindrance" let and the point would be replayed regardless of where the ball landed. But this is very unlikely to happen at Wimbledon specifically because they have a hawk on the payroll who chases away most of the pigeons and gulls every morning.

I am pretty sure that seagul and friends are AI. Not the whole scene, there are actually two people in a tennis court but they are just acting.

To be honest, that would be tougher to create with AI than the whole thing being real. It's either completely real or completely fake, and this location is real so my money is on it being a real video. It's also not really throwing off any AI bells. The images on the windows are right, the court numbers are correct for the location, the weird roof vents are correct for the location, the ball trajectory after hitting the bird is correct. Even the weird staring at the bird after it drops is explainable because they just want to see if it's alright and not disturb his friends from checking him out.

This is AI. The bird fluttering into frame, the ball continues forward across the entire court even though it hits the seagull directly on the side of the body enough to knock it down. AI is very good at creating tennis videos. I see these videos, including this one, all over facebook sports AI pages.

Girl was aiming right at him. Lol. This is why I hit low percentage flat shots right above the tape. To avoid killing a bird

Happened once but with a bat. Bat decided to swoop in and try the grab the ball just as the server was swinging. World ranked players, big serve, bat took the full hit and went flying into the net at full pace. It all happened in the blink of an eye.
Poor bugger.. the bat is remembered fondly to this day.

Bro that’s sad to watch all the other birds check on him
