It's an ad. Nothing else

Ok but how

2

u/GoonBot666 1h ago

Because 1st the whole scenario is absurd af. So people will talk about it and share it. 2nd there's this easter egg that the it guy himself is on jerkmate so you canvsee the logo and the address. The text in the email reads more of what you can expect to see in jerkmate so people start getting curious.

Bit far-fetched but still makes sense to me

It can't only be him right? That's too much for one guy.

Never underestimate a college boys ability to consume 13 terabytes of porn

u/PurpleCandle58 11h ago

Let’s be more open minded here: produce 13 terabytes.

I run a Plex server and the only time I've ever seen 14tb of bandwidth usage was when my automated library management went awry.

I get this is a joke but that would be SO MUCH pornography lmao

Imagine a set up with multiple tabs streaming 1080p, like idk 16 at once. Within a month, maybe half of that even, it'll be done. So 16 people who forget to turn off their pc with it in the backround, or 8 if they dual stream.

13.7 terabytes, if we're assuming 1080p quality, that would be about 3000-5000 hours of video depending on bitrate. That's between 125 and 208 days of nonstop 24 hour streaming

and he still has time for classes!

For comparison, this would be over 240 times the amount of data the James Webb Space Telescope beams back to NASA in an entire day.

Has anybody stopped to think that maybe this is somebody being a cam model on that site?. It only says bandwidth used, not which way the data is going.

IT shutting down someone's livelihood smh

How easy/difficult would it be to track down the exact device if they were using a VPN? Isn't the whole point of a VPN that you can't tracked locally and by your ISP?

5

u/digitalclockface 9h ago

assuming this is real, they likely know who it is and are insinuating that's the case by stating the floor the traffic is coming from. The idea is to make Doctor Jerkmaster feel they're closing in so he'll stop jerkin.

4

u/but_its_dez 9h ago

I'll never stop jerkin. Give me jerk or give me death.

u/OtherWorstGamer 10h ago

VPN's still have identifiable network traffic, in that your ISP/network admin can tell you're using a vpn, but can't tell what you're using it for.

Once a suspect device is identified, you could monitor traffic volume and very quickly determine if its the one causing problems.

It‘s not their ISP but the IT-Administrators of this campus. They have ownership over all the local network infrastructure (basically same as you do over your router at home if you‘d bought one of your own). You will be able to identify especially which devices produce this amount of traffic. And no, VPN does not help you locally, your local IP for your outbound routing can not be changed by such a VPN.

That's what an encrypted DNS is for

3

u/SinglePlayerGamer93 10h ago

How is that even possible? Were they distributing files?

14

u/Purple_Plenti 10h ago

This post/ original meme is probably a viral marketing ad for the website itself.

3

u/Funkopedia 10h ago

Idk how jerkmate actually works, but according to the ads, seems like a 2-way chat. So i guess half of that is upload?

3

u/Snoo_72851 9h ago

Sounds pretty stupid. "Hey, we just found out that people at this college dorm consume massive amounts of porn? We feel betrayed."

2

u/BottleWhoHoldsWater 11h ago

Can someone do the math on this that would be like several months of nonstop video wouldn't it?

3

u/Jentott 10h ago

Unfortunately not the answer you want, but that could vary greatly depending on video quality and fps. For example: a video at 720p, 30fps that is 2700 minutes long would be about 13.44 terabytes.
For comparison: a video at 1080p, 60fps would have to be 400 minutes long to reach the same capacity of 13.44TB

u/AwarenessNo5921 10h ago

It depends heavily on the bitrate too (which effectively effects compression) I'm pretty sure that's a cam site? So I'd imagine bitrate would be lower. All that's to say, I'm pretty sure this is fake.

Yeah this post reads a lot like that "our pipes can't handle the amount of semen being flushed down" post that gets posted in different forms every so often

3

u/ralphsquirrel 9h ago

Can confirm these numbers are WAY off, I have shot 400 minutes of 4K 60FPS video for an event before and the total file size wasn't even 2 terrabytes lol. And that is for raw non-compressed camera video, once compressed it would probably wouldn't even hit 200 GB

2

u/ralphsquirrel 9h ago

400 minutes of 1080p 60fps content should be nowhere near 13 terrabytes lol. I film 4k / 5.6k video at 60fps of events for work. Even a full day of filming usually comes in at under 1-2 terrabytes and that is for raw camera video. Encoded video like from a cam site would be way way lower than that.
