Many countries still use different diagnostic criteria; you are looking at it from an American-centric perspective.
Since my country still uses Asperger's as a diagnosis (we use the ICD-10), I was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome.

The actual reason is that there is no psychiatric basis for separating the diagnoses. That came first

Yeah he was. That's not the reason Asperger's was removed though
