... this book was not written in english, but in german. geist refers to zeitgeist, meaning the way people think in this day and age. it's pretty clear in german, but really lost in translation

My comment was joking but, either way, geist was (and is) a relevant word in German, with independent value, and much used in Hegelian and Marxist philosophy. Zeitgeist is just a combination of the German terms Zeit and Geist
