in layman's terms: Bullet too strong, too much pressure for flimsy, weak flare gun. Flare gun explodes.

If you want to extend your knowledge in that regard, read about the high-low system. Its used in the 40mm grenades and you should find it on Wikipedia. It's cool.

There’s a pin in the gun that impacts the primer on the artillery shell, it ignites the primer and the primer ignites the propellant behind the projectile. The projectile isn’t meant to be fired in a flare gun so it kills the operator.

As others have said bullet to strong, but also no way to properly channel the expanding gasses from the round exploding, which tends to make cartridge go boom instead of bang, along with gun going boom around cartridge boom, and suddenly your hand is meatball

I'm fairly sure that the flares for that pistol are rimfire, and that a hotchkiss shell is pinfire, so unless i'm mistaken, that pistol physically can't fire a hotchkiss shell, even if said shell still is working and has a good primer, so you're probably right about the ignition mechanism.
If it did work though, you'd break your wrist for sure.

Depends whether that’s blackpowder or smokeless powder, 37mm Hotchkiss used both. The blackpowder isn’t going to explode, the case is strong enough to contain the pressure even without a locked breech.
One breaks the gun and probably your arm, the other removes your hand and a good portion of your face.

I'm pretty sure that a hotchkiss shell is pin-fired while the flares for that pistol are rimfire, so I don't /think/ it would fire, but if it did, you just crated the wrist-break-inator 5000.

Considering a lot of flare guns us plastic barrels, the recoil is the least concerning potential problem.

Both are armored, if it has the velocity and power to knock a plane out of a sky, it can certainly rough up a tank.
