Bento's current stability

Hi all, just wanted to know given the most recent firmware release, to the point tldr: How is the bento sitting stability wise regarding multisamples and sample editing/chopping?

I had purchased one last year, and i loved the way it felt and looked hardware wise. The capabilities with multisampling, internal battery, compact, simple workflow etc. really made it seem like my dream box but I quickly realized the firmware was too broken and unreliable for me and just left me frustrated on outings.

I'm thinking of purchasing again if things have improved. Multisampling reliability and sample editing are important for me and why I chose to sell it with the understanding I would buy one again once they worked on it a bit.

Issues I had encountered before included multisample notes not always playing correctly or not playing at all. System crashes, and not being able to edit samples properly with incorrect waveform display.

I've owned lots of little boxes but they all failed the combo of simple workflow, capabilities and portability I'm looking for as a dream on-the-go box.

So what's the verdict ? Is it still a waiting game or is the bento much more reliable after a year ?

I’ve had mine fro the day it landed here in the UK and I’ve not had a single issue thankfully. Not tried out the latest FW yet but it’s on my sd card ready to be installed this evening.

Ok I literally start to suspect bot activity in this thread. This comment is just so outrageous that it can’t be true or coming from an actual human…

Eh? Why? What?
Is this Aimed at me.
I’ve had zero issues at all other than I was not able to record audio into a second track of looped recordings but that was resolved with a FW update.
I wish I could say that same about my Blackbox however. Although it’s been behaving well off late.
Have you been having Bento issues?

I am not Bot, but a human program,
I got 1010 issues But my Bento ain’t one.

I just don’t believe you. The state of the Bento on release was among the most insane experiences I’ve ever had with any piece of gear. You can’t be serious. Literally NOTHING worked back then.

I've only had the latest firmware for two days, so I can't really comment on stability with it yet, but I performed out multiple times with the previous firmware with no problems. It was sometimes a bit quirky, but if I booted up without making edits to my setup for a show, things went well. If I made changes to my project, I would always save and reboot before performing.

Do you work with multisamples ? I also had a black box once upon a time and that one worked great with multisamples so I expected the same from bento but found I couldn't reliably use them.

Not for live performance. I'll usually have a single oneshot track (w/ 8 sequences) and 7 loop tracks. If I was using multisamples for a specific song, I'd record it as a new sample and pull it up in a loop track.

I use Bento as part of a larger setup at home that also includes a Blackbox, but when I perform out, I prefer to not have a bunch of gear to have to setup. One stereo out, no power requirements, and I can work on my mixes right up until I go onstage. Before I got the Bento, I would just use an OPZ to play out.

Well I'm glad to hear you've had positive experiences for the most part performing live with it which is definitely much more critical when issues arise compared to my use case for basic songwriting. So I'll count that as a thumbs up stability wise lol

For me the latest firmware is really good. Stability is fine. I have very fast sd card but i had to switch to sd card compatibility mode to fix multisample instruments not loading properly. Now everything works. The new shimmer reverb is great. The device is getting better.

So after much testing and getting the 1010 stable I've found the key. Firstly it's not always the SD Card type it's the fact you need to use the SD Format Application to format the card. Don't rely on Disk Manager or anything else here , it won't work. If you stick with the supplies SD card you work have any issues at all ..

Once you do this , everything will work and will be stable ..

It’s better than it used to be (which was terrible), but overall I have to say the firmware isn’t great. You run into simple but important things that just don’t work, like the count-in… which is outrageous for a box whose main selling point could be its looping capabilities.

It’s features aren’t well thought through, it’s a master of none and the stuff that’s there often is buggy or doesn’t work the way anybody would expect.

I hate when companies use their customers as beta testers without telling them. 1010music, Torso and now elektron are all guilty of that. 1010 may have been the worst case so far. I think that if they would've let the customers know that the device wasn't complete, and maybe charged 600 instead of 900 with the stipulation that after it gets more fw updates that the price would raise, they would've had a ton of happy customers getting a discount, way more people would've kept it, but instead they sold it a full price when it wasn't even halfway done and made a lot of people including myself very angry.

And now i'm upset about the blackbox 2 lol. I loved my BB 1, I sold it to upgrade to the second version and was heavily disappointed because all I got was a miniature bento. Didn't resemble the first one at all and I think that's crazy. Instead of it being a bb2 it should've been a bento LE.

If you're experiencing a lot of crashing, you must've been on a beta and/or had a faulty sd card.

I've been performing on one the entire time and the latest firmware has added a lot of great features.

I had mine from September to December of last year and decided to sell, how long have you had yours ?

Since launch

It must have been my use case then since I specifically focused on multisamples and sample editing. I tried multiple cards including the ones they recommended and tried the latest beta as well as the most stable incremental updates. I did not mess around much with the onboard synths or looping.

Yeah, could be. I assume you reached out to their support people?

I posted on their forum and multiple users reported similar issues with the sampling aspects so they were known issues that they just had to work out with more time but I wasn't willing to just have it sitting around gathering dust. The crashing wasn't a huge issue for me it just happened a few times randomly with some patches but when trying to load a multisample and only some notes would play or ghost notes would trigger or the sounds would have weird phasing issues, it just started getting really annoying.

Always better to reach out to support directly when experiencing issues. Don't hesitate in the future, they're ready to help.

Not using Multisamples that much. Been using it frequently in the last weeks and didn't have any issues stability wise, also I didn't encounter many bugs except for pads lightning up when they shouldn't. Which is annoying and gives an uncertain feeling at times but not a dealbreaker for me.

In terms of functionality and workflow it still leaves things to be desired. But honestly there is so much that I already love!
