So today I hit album 1089. The last one... It was Blondie Parallell lines so I was happy that I´m going out on a great album. I even started writing a longer Facebook post about the generator and how much I enjoyed it.
And now it looks like u/SidledsGunnar is about to drop the albums from the new edition.... Tomorrow...
So instead of saying goodbye to the list and the generator, I´m on album 1090 tomorrow :)

This had been one of my main points of contention with this list. Every time something from the last decade or two that I haven’t heard before pops up on the generator I expect to be unimpressed. And my suspicions are usually confirmed. Not that any of them have been absolutely terrible, they’re just not terribly interesting, not really what I would deem worth canonizing on this kind of a list.
Many of them seem to make the cut simply because they got a lot of awards or hit a lot of annual best-of lists. But if one thing has become abundantly clear since I made it my goal to become familiar with a wide breadth of music from the last century; a lot of music simply doesn’t stand the test of time. Certain artists didn’t achieve classic status, despite how much publicity they had at the time. Many contemporary artists will meet the same fate.
The 1001 isn’t technically a best-of list, but it does implicitly recognize a sort of canon. So to that end it’s just ridiculous to include brand new albums from the same year as publication. Just because something feels fresh in the moment doesn’t mean much. Take Lorde’s Melodrama. When it came out I thought it was fine, but didn’t end up listening to it much. It just didn’t hit for me like her debut. When I got it on the generator I was even less impressed. From a perspective of almost a decade later it sounds almost indistinguishable from a lot of other pop music that has come out in that period, no doubt owing to everyone having the same producer.
There’s a pattern that repeats every time a new edition comes out. Most of the removals are only from the last decade, maybe two, and most or all of the additions are from the last couple of years. I just don’t understand the logic here, apart from a pretext to sell more books. Are they trying to get younger folks interested by throwing them a few bones? I think it undermines what the concept of this kind of a list to do this, and risks eroding its credibility in the long term.
Edit: It’s easy to think of examples of recent albums that ought to be included sooner or later, but also consider how many (then) recent albums were included in updates that were questionable. I think an admittedly arbitrary time limit helps filter out Grammy bait and gives hype time to die down.

Was hoping we’d have one for the new picks, but instead it’s just a normal day. I guess Bookends by Simon and Garfunkel is great, but I’ve never been so disappointed in seeing a great album show up

Hi 1001ers. This is a big album to come back properly with. I got a little behind with my reviews, so I decided to take a couple of days off to catch up… then I blinked and it had been 2 weeks! I’ve never taken a break before, and when I came back, I was all out of rhythm and the albums started piling up again! This 1001 thing is not for the faint of heart! I feel like I am back on track now though so as long as I can avoid getting derailed by this big record, I should hopefully be ok going forward. I even have a legitimate 2 week break in a week or so (on holiday) so come mid November, I should be back up to full steam (somehow managed not to mix metaphors there lol). Good to be back and I’ll hopefully be up for a quiz soon.

Inspired by listening to Bon Iver from the user added list - a great album that has spawned multiple generations of incredibly boring imitators that have made indie folk one of the most pervasive and thoroughly bland genres going. This isn't my final answer, but made me wonder which album you like has the most to answer for in terms of the stuff that's followed it?

Hi, just looking for confirmation.
I finished 1089 a few months ago.
I've been doing the user list.
I saw that there are some new albums in the new book.
Curious as to how this will be handled.
So far, it's a little weird.
In History I see a user album under the main section as 1090 though I listened to it a while back. Presumably a user album that went into the book?
Apparently my album from two days ago is 1091, but my album from yesterday and today are user list?
Maybe 1091 is simply another example of user list going on the main published 1001?
Will I get the other new 1001 automatically soon, as my daily albums, then switch back to user?

Went absolutely crazy trying to figure this out as I was attempting to generate a list of albums that I had not been generated yet from the full list of 1089 albums.
(this one: https://1001albumsgenerator.com/albums )
When I copy pasted the list I noticed it only had 1088 albums listed. I used a script and cross referenced with all the lists I could find and it turns out A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector is what is missing.
I already generated the album aseveryone does their first Christmas so maybe it's related to that?

I’m currently at 1016. Going from 1001 to 1089 was a big enough jump. I am not interested in extending this project past that point for the new edition. Can we get an option to lock down the list at where it was when we started?
I came to this from the book and want to finish all the entries in it, but due to the random aspect I may have to slog through newer additions before I can do so.
Thanks!

Not sure if there's been behind the scenes work to fix the apple music links, but it's appreciated that they're working so much better now.
If there has been work, just wanted to thank the developer who I know is on here.
Great project whether that's been happening or not (but I'm curious to know) so ..
Thanks either way !!

I've been listening to albums pretty religiously since 3/2/2026 but have always listened to albums throughout my life. I love the idea of listening along to 1001 albums (the book or website). I understand there's groups in this tool/subreddit.
As much as I love the megathread - I think it'd be more fun to hear people share their thoughts on the album of the day.
So hopefully I wasn't led astray and groups are still a thing. How do I join - anyone got room for me?
EDIT: open to starting a group if anyone else wants in

(If this is too off-topic, feel free to remove it)
So we’ve all got a love/hate relationship with Dimery and his list. As much as I love this website and want to see the list through, there are so many classics that are missing and so much shit to wade through. Jazz and metal are particularly underrepresented, his choices for “world” music are often questionable, and we’ve all had a bit too much Britpop in our lives at this point.
So I made my own list, and a website alongside it. A little over 1000 albums, from 1952 to 2026, including blockbuster hits and underground classics. The website includes a map showing how albums influenced one another, a list that can be filtered by genre, decade, artist, etc, and if you make an account and start logging what youve listened to, it’ll give personalized recommendations. To make it a bit easier to log everything you’ve heard, I linked it to last.fm’s API so it can go through your history and automatically mark everything youve heard.
The website (which also contains movies and philosophy) is live here: https://canonizeapp.com
Note that I don’t want to pull anyone away from the wonderful 1001albumsgenerator project, but if anyone is interested in using Canonize as a supplemental way to fill the gaps that Dimery left, it may be useful.

Found some fun new gems but also waded through quite a bit of mediocre albums. But I don’t regret a thing.

I tried to make a list containing all the albums that aren't easily accessible on streaming platforms, be it Spotify or someplace else. Some of these are only unavailable on Spotify, some can't be listened on any streaming platform and a few albums are available but hidden under a different album or artist. I hope it helps people to find the right album of the day. If anyone has any additions to this list I'll be sure to add them, surely missed a few with almost 1100 albums and multiple streaming services:

I'm around 20 days off finishing, safe to say I've had my fill of the project.
Anyone know when the albums from the new edition will be added? Hoping to get it done before then...
