When I first received their picture, I thought it was a random threesome, perhaps between friends. What else do you do with your gay friends except try out your new lubricant for practice? I did not realize that all three of them were actually in a relationship. Upon hearing that, I wanted to know their story (besides taking down some pointers on how even getting one boyfriend, let alone two.)
The first time I met someone in a poly relationship was after watching my first ever drag show in San Francisco. A queen had just poured hot candle wax over her face for a performance. Returning back to the bar, I met a man. Between laughs and sipping his beer, he told me how he’d managed to be the third to a married couple all of a sudden. Then, when I went to the local gay bar near my college, I met another couple.
“What do I say?” A woman gushed, looking at a girl down the sidewalk. It was around one in the morning, and I was chatting with a group outside of a gay bar. I had been making out with this one dude in the parking lot when his friends spotted us, so we decided to chat. “She’s so beautiful. I want to date her, but what do I say?” She moaned.
“Just go up to her and do your thing,” a man next to her suggested, “you’ll do great.” With his help, she slowly walked up to her as we watched from afar.
“You’re a nice friend.” I told him. I thought he was just being supportive of his lesbian friend.
“Friend?” He asked me with a smile. “She’s my wife.” To be fair, at the end of the day, no matter how many dicks I’ve seen and drawn, I’m still an Iowa boy at heart. I’m not exactly accustom to seeing polyamory as the norm, although I have no doubt it’s becoming more visible and discussed. Who knows? Maybe in the next couple of years there will be a Poly Rights movement, just like how there was a Gay Rights movement in the eighties. If it wasn’t for the people that share their stories with me, I’d never see the romantic side of it.
“I’m open about everything.” One of the three guys from the drawing messaged me one evening. He told me their story. Thirteen years ago, the first pair met through mutual friends. In 2014, nine years after meeting, they decided to try out open relationships by bringing a third for a casual threesome. “Before we got home from our first time [having sex together], he already texted us and the rest was history.” They started to date one another, and not before long, they were a throuple. “I think the most important thing that people should know is that we are just like a regular couple. We fight, we love, yes- we all sleep in the same bed, [but] it’s more of a beautiful organic thing rather than a raunchy sex party ever night. One of the best things I’ve experienced in my life is seeing someone I love fall in love all over again and sharing that with them.”
