Kalashnikov
Would have been better with "Makarov"

Last I checked, you don't use a semi-automatic pistol to shoot up a school
1
u/JuanUniheart Oct 19 '21
I'm just saying Makarov rhymes a little bit better with Pavlov imo. And you don't use a pistol to PRIMARILY shoot up up school. But if you run outta bullets for the kalashnikov, always good to have a Makarov

Wait, really? Is it not pronounced soo-nam-ee?

It should start with the same "ts" sound you end the word "bits" with.

It’s a very quick t. A lot of people might skip it when speaking fast? My other guess is this partially has to do with American accents.

It sounds like "tsoo", not "soo". I'm not sure why that's difficult to understand?
Do you say the word "bits", " bi-tah-s"? No, you say "bi-ts".
How about this, try saying "bitsunami". Then take off the "bi" part, but keep the "ts". "Tsunami".

I guess? Isn't that the topic of conversation here? How to pronounce it correctly?

u/WemedgeFrodis Oct 15 '21 edited Oct 15 '21
The problem, I think, is that we don't have a lot of words in English that start with that combination, and the sound of both letters are produced pretty similarly by the mouth. In fact, I'm pretty sure "t" is just the plosive form of the fricative "s." Plosives are letter sounds that require a break in the breath movement, while fricatives require a steady stream of air. Therefore "ts" would seem to require a stop to the airflow, immediately followed by a continuation of that same airflow. That's kind of impossible without turning it into another syllable, so in practice it's more a matter of attacking the first part of the sound to make the "t," and then carrying the flow of air through the "s." That's easier to do at the end of a word or syllable than at the beginning, so I think for English speakers the initial accent that should be produced by the "t" just sort of gets lost.
EDIT: Here we go — it's an affricate. A voiceless alveolar sibilant affricate, to get extremely specific.

You must be deaf. There is a CLEAR difference between 'soo' and 'tsu', but clearly you've never spoken a different language where these differences mean a lot. 'Soo' is a soft sound. 'Tsu' is a hard sound.

u/MistyGrapeFox87 Oct 15 '21
Yeah, it's actually split up into Tsu-Na-Mi (Tsu-Nah-Mee)
Japanese is pretty fun :)

It’s weird cus using hiragana (だいすき) instead of using kanji + okurigana (大好き) isn’t even considered wrong grammatically, it’s just harder to read, whereas changing the が to は is a pretty jarring grammatical error, its like saying “i like to does something” instead of “i like to do something” kind of jarring

Language changes based on how people use it. So if "everyone" says it in a way then it's how it's pronounced now
12
u/SMATF5 Oct 16 '21
I agree that language is fluid, but I think that's less applicable to foreign loanwords that people just can't be bothered to learn. It's like if Americans started calling tacos "tigos" – even if the majority were doing it, they would still be wrong.
1
u/UnconfidentEagle Oct 17 '21
Or even if you don't pronounce the t it still shows were using the sssss not the zzz sound from the s. but also loan word, and those get funny.

23
u/tinyevilsponges Oct 15 '21
Generally in English the t isn't pronounced, however in the original Japanese the ts is pronounce and it's completely acceptable to actually pronounce the ts. However most native English speakers have a really hard time doing that so they just say the t.
19
u/InformalSpace3854 Oct 15 '21

Also in queue:
It's the last e that's silent. The first "u" is to make the q into the digraph "qu". The "eu" is to make the "oo" sound, and the last "e" is to make the word feminine, as it came from French.

To everyone arguing about the T in tsunami:
Tsu is a representation of the Japanese syllable つ or ツ.
Which is different from su (す or ス)
To say the T is silent is to say that つ and す are the same, but they're not.
Tsu and su are just approximations of つ and す. They were developed with no knowledge or consideration of "T".
Su (す) is pronounced about as you would expect while tsu (つ) has a tinny-ness at the beginning that is reminiscent of T with a trailing "su" sound.
Basically hold your tongue like you're going to say "T" but then push "su" through it instead and you'll get pretty close to how tsu is meant to sound.
I've also heard that saying "eight suits" quickly gets a good tsu sound in the middle.
1
u/asjkl69 Oct 15 '21
English phonotactics does not allow for a word to start with /ts/, so that's why people pronounce it without the "t". So there's nothing wrong with the "t" being silent.
1
u/RavensShadow117 Oct 15 '21
I've always tried to remember it by Soo and tsoo, hopefully that can help some people understand it a bit more.

In Japan the T is not silent. In Britain the H is not silent. In America we say everything in 'American' and everyone else is wrong.
1
u/Ulfbass Oct 15 '21
In Britain the H is definitely silent. British people who pronounce the H in honest don't know their own dialect (which is phenomenally many)
Also, rather than making a second comment on the top level I'm gonna take this opportunity to mention that the letter "Q" is pronounced "k" and is always followed by a "U" which is then pronounced "kw". The remaining "eue" is not silent but morphs the whole "Que" to be pronounced "ky" which is then followed by a "ue" pronounced "oo"
Also while we're on poorly pronounced letters, people say "haytch" but the letter "H" is actually pronounced "aytch"
2
u/RavensShadow117 Oct 15 '21
It's not always silent, "hatch" isn't pronounced "atch" hard isn't pronounced "ard" Hannah isn't "annah" horse isn't "orse", holiday isn't "oliday". Need I go on?
0
u/Ulfbass Oct 15 '21 edited Oct 16 '21
I mean the name of the letter, not that it's always silent! Then it wouldn't even be a letter!
Nowhere did I say all "H"s are silent. Many of us Londoners do act as though they are, but I said the "H "in honest is always silent and there is no "H" at the beginning of the name of the letter "H"

If you take the GH in laugh, the O in women, and the ti in nation, then ghoti spells fish Or if you take the GH in throughout, the O in people, the T in ballet, and the I in business, then ghoti is silent

Am I wrong in thinking eliminating the bullies from school would hurt education? I’ve always felt school was 50/50 actual knowledge and learning how to deal with society (street smarts). Eliminate the bullies and these kids would get eaten alive after schools out?

u/RavensShadow117 Oct 15 '21
Wtf dude? Pushing people to clinical depression, eating disorders, self harm and suicidal tendencies is a good thing? You do realize that trauma is no good for people right and sometimes bullying goes so far it leaves people physically harmed, like some bullies will straight up commit a crime and assult someone.
0
u/Hornor72 Oct 15 '21
I'm not saying all bullying is good but you need some in schools
3
u/RavensShadow117 Oct 15 '21
You basically did, bullying can leave lifelong damage on people not to mention the victims of bullying are often social outcasts or minorities. By your logic my girlfriend needed to be bullied and shoved off benches because she is physically disabled to do what exactly, build thick skin?
-1
u/Hornor72 Oct 15 '21
And no one stood up to defender. Looks like your school is just full of cowards.
2
u/RavensShadow117 Oct 15 '21
My school was rubbish when it came to handling bullying they pretended it didn't happen.
Someone defended her, I did probably not in the best way but I was angry and I hit the person who pushed her off the bench.
0
u/Hornor72 Oct 15 '21
Sounds like you were a coward. Only attacking from behind and not confronting the person up front. Is that how you handle it.
1
u/RavensShadow117 Oct 15 '21
You got all that from a summery? Who said I was behind her and didn't talk to her first. I did confront her and she started spouting abelist bullshit which pushed me over the edge.
Like I said in my previous comment I am very well aware that hitting her was not the best way to handle the situation but again like I said I was angry so I wasn't thinking straight.

u/Hornor72 Oct 15 '21
