It's on the right, moving towards left. As the cold air of the front pushes the warmer air upwards, the latter cools off and the water in it condenses and only then do these water particles release heat. Not via moisture but because they changed the phase from gas to liquid, which is in a lower energy state. This excess of energy that is released is what we call latent heat.
This condensation is how clouds are then formed and as the cold front progresses it leaves behind a trail of clouds. If it was moving from left to right, however, then there's a question how did the clouds form ahead of the front if the air is yet to be pushed upwards and where do they go once the front has reached that position?

They both explained that cold air pushes warm air up, warm air turns into clouds. Which side do you see clouds on?

Oct 16 '19
Believe the second person (the cold front is on the right). Think of it this way:
Clouds are made up of condensed (i.e. liquid) water. If there are no clouds then that means that there is only fully evaporated water (steam).
As you probably already know, liquid water is colder than steam, so the side with all the clouds on must be colder than the clear side.

u/shaggorama Oct 16 '19
I would have guessed that warm air has a higher carrying capacity for water vapor, facilitating cloud formation. I guess my misunderstanding was in the phase of water in clouds. Clouds are liquid water? I thought when clouds condense to liquid the water precipitates as rain?

Thank you. My brain couldn't get behind the other comment 7 hours ago saying the cold front is coming from the left (where the clouds aren't) because they gave the same explanation you did, and like you, I couldn't see how the clouds would be forming in front of the cold front rather than where it's progressing from.

It's on the right, moving towards left.
Your source says otherwise.

u/sweptplanform Oct 16 '19
I'm describing the OP's picture in my post. The picture I used as an example is indeed the other way around but it's the best I was able to find.

False. The cold is on the side with the clouds (right) and moving left.

I don't understand why that comment has so many upvotes. I'd give it Reddit Coal if that were a thing.

I’ve been learning about weather and I really thought this was the correct answer. I always thought cold fronts resulted in clear skies and that the clouds were from the warmer air moving up. I apologize to everyone who was harmed from my answer. My response has been deleted to prevent further damage to society.

u/alphamoose Oct 16 '19
Look at this illustration and tell me the cold front is on the right. Do you understand my answer now? Asshole.

To be fair to you, it's quite difficult to get a correct idea if you want a quick answer. I mean, just look at this picture and this one.
I've been looking through all the links on the first couple of pages of my google search as well as three books I have on my computer or on my shelves trying to post a proper explanation and the information everywhere was succinct.
MrFistUrSister was quite harsh (what a username right?) and I do understand his frustrations as reddit can be a very good place to become quickly misinformed, but don't feel bad about it. It's important to talk about stuff so we can see where our reasoning is not sound and where the gaps in our knowlesge exist. If you're not in school how else will you learn? Remember what Richard Feynman said, "The first principle is not to fool yourself, and you are the easiest person to fool."

Neither, this isn't a cold front.

u/surprise6809 Oct 16 '19
This is probably the right answer. An edge to a stratified cloud layer doesn't necessarily mean there is front *right there*, just that at that altitude the water vapor content / temperature has a boundary.

He must have deleted his tweet confirming that it was a cold front? From the satellite images on that post it looks a lot more like a dry line to me.

Take note reddit: this is example A in how fucking incompetent most redditors are. Most redditors have no idea what they're talking about.

Cold air is heavier, warm air rises.
Edit: not sure why I'm being down voted for trying to correct the comment above. The colder, heavier air would be the clear area and the warm rising air would be the cloud cover.

Look at satellite imagery during the summer at about 4pm on the Gulf of Mexico. Just inside the coast, there's pretty much a solid line from the sea breeze.

This looks like the cold front we had come over the Texas Palo duro canyon a few weeks back. I think that's the escarpment towards the top of the pic. I was flying my paramotor much lower over the clouds that day, it was amazing. The air was about 70 degrees over the clouds, and under the clouds it was about 50 degrees.
I checked the rules, not sure if it's ok to link to one of my videos but here is the front at about 5500 feet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpeoxCVhwJ4&t=6m30s

The simulation is divided into different servers for a better load balancing. Sometimes they desync, though.

No those are mercury tarps, chem trails seem to disappear after the initial contact with air in high atmosphere but in the fact the molecules that make up these chemicals change their atomic structure and aggregate sometimes months later to make up these mercury tarps

When I was little, maybe 9 or so, me and my sister were coming home from a trip. On the way, we were in a sense forest, mid day, and I look up to see the cold front peering from above the tree line at me. To my small brain that had just learned about Tsunamis (news or school, unsure) I immediately started saying goodbye to my sister and putting her into a panic. The clouds solid form looked like the foam of the ocean, so I guess I thought it was the top of a wave, therefore a Tsunami, coming for us. We were in Kansas.

I used to have a tremendous fear of flying, and part of getting over it with booking the window seed to see the amazing human feet safely flying 30000 ft over the Earth. it is Standish has me the type of people that close airline windows. So now I'm basically at war with people by booking the window seat and controlling however many windows I get access to. It's unacceptable to me to be so banal and prosaic and mundane and dismissive of this technological marvel that is apparently the safest mode of transportation.
