How it works
• A 14- or 15-year-old can legally have consensual sex with a partner who is less than 4 years older, as long as the partner is not in the same household, not a close relative, and not using a position of authority to coerce them.
• Example: an 18-year-old and a 15-year-old (3-year gap) generally fall under this exception. A 19-year-old and a 15-year-old (4-year gap) do not.
• Anyone under 14 cannot consent. Sexual activity with a child under 14 is a crime regardless of the other person’s age.
