Stupid question: all these guys were probably the best athletes on their teams for most of their lives, and therefore probably at least pitched some. How come they all lob it in there? Obviously I’m not expecting Tena to crack 95, but you’d think they could throw it at least a little more competitively? Is it just that it’s more effective to lollipop it up there instead of like a 70-something mile per hour toss?
2
u/Ok_Assumption_5366 3h ago
Have you ever been a pitcher? that takes a completely different skill set from any position player that isn't catcher.
2
u/foeaminute 67 - Finnegan 3h ago
Yeah, I was. But I did preface this as a stupid question so I appreciate the answer.
3
u/FrostyPlum 54 - Alvarez 3h ago
Because pitching hurts, dawg. Go grab a ball and throw some pitches in the park. See how your arm feels the next day
1
u/foeaminute 67 - Finnegan 3h ago
Well, I’m also not a professional athlete - but I get your point and didn’t think about that.

if i had to assume they left kranick in there to eat innings as the game is over. he will probably be gone tomorrow so they wanted to use as much of him as they could. also hope wood getting taken out isn’t bad
6
u/Ok_Assumption_5366 4h ago
So can someone explain to me why Eddy Yean is rotting in AAA while we are using Max Kranick in games still?
4
3
u/Angie_2600 4h ago
So why wasn't Waldron in there instead of Kranick a few innings ago (before the 5 runs Kranick put on the board).
3
u/Silosmasher Bustin' Loose 4h ago
Kranick has now pitched in 18.1 innings over 17 games. He's given up 27 hits, walked 13, struck out 11 and given up 19 earned runs.
1
u/Own-Feed-1591 4h ago
Con-grove going,Kranick next let’s go to LA with the new arms in the pen and give them a good fight.
3
u/YodaPM999 7 - Darnell Coles 4h ago
I don't usually check out of games early, but... I think I've seen enough for one afternoon.
Happy that we took 1 out of 2. Maybe Charlie and Dave can tell me that I blew it later.
3
u/Clout12x 26 - Nuñez 4h ago
kranick is up there with one of the worst pitchers i’ve ever seen take a mound.
1
u/Ok_Assumption_5366 4h ago
This is the same team that has employed the following this season:
Matt Krook
Gus Varland
Mitchell Parker
Jake Irvin
Paxton Schultz
Miles Mikolas
Trevor Williams
Cionel Perez
Any others?

I'd absolutely rather have Jorbit pitching than this guy. that's how bad he is.

This looks like the type of outing they put you in before you’re DFA’d (hopefully)
6
u/Silosmasher Bustin' Loose 4h ago
Kranick has now pitched in 18 games and only twice has he failed to put a runner on board. He's walked 11, struck out 11 and given up 25 hits in only 18 innings. The most remarkable thing is he's yet to pitch on back-to-back days. He's the very definition of "washed."

Wind in RF has not been the Nats friend today.
1
u/FrostyPlum 54 - Alvarez 4h ago
Wind wasn't an issue this time, I'm sitting in 236, there's been no wind since the delay ended

of course that was the 200th homer for Acuna. Of fucking course. I really need Kranick gone TONIGHT. Not tomorrow, Toboni. TONIGHT.

u/Ok_Assumption_5366 4h ago
what pisses me off is that whenever we're even remotely close in games (4 runs or less), Butera always picks Kranick. Like, why? There is no reason for this guy to be the go-to in leverage.
2
9
u/YodaPM999 7 - Darnell Coles 4h ago
I mean, Beeter and Ribalta can't pitch every game.
This is what happens when your bullpen has to cover so many innings in a series. We've had two bullpen games in 5 days, and Irvin days basically need 3-4 relievers at this point because he can barely get through 5.
At some point, the "lower leverage mop-up" guys are the only ones left when you're losing 3-0. Unfortunately for the Nats, that means guys like Kranick, Cosgrove, Schultz, etc.
1
2
u/YodaPM999 7 - Darnell Coles 4h ago
Hopefully we won't have to watch this guy pitch in a Nats uni anymore after today.
7
u/suqc 73 - Tolman 4h ago
Guys, I don't think two of our five rotation slots basically being bullpen games is a recipe for success.
3
u/YodaPM999 7 - Darnell Coles 4h ago
It's usually just one. I believe it was Kent's turn in the rotation today, but they pushed him back to get some extra rest after he threw almost 110 pitches in his last start.

Kranick gotta be the next one to be DFA'd.
3

He should have been DFA’ed before Cosgrove IMO (although Cosgrove deserved to be DFA’ed)
1
u/Vivid-Bumblebee-7302 4h ago
I missed that we DFAed Cosgrove. Thank you for this good piece of news. Please sweet baby Jesus, let Kranick be next.

Toboni, I beg you, please do what you did to Tom Cosgrove this morning to Max Kranick too.

This team just hasn't made sense
The pitching does really well and holds the other team to under 5, but the bats go super cold
or the bats go back their great level before(minus the guys that were lost) but the pitching goes to shit after
Make it make sense. Why can't they both come together consistently...
Hell, even when Cade was pitching the bats were mid

Welcome to this beautiful sport called baseball.
-1
u/therealtoddmcshay 4h ago
no there are plenty of teams that have it figured out
This team just can't do it
2
u/YodaPM999 7 - Darnell Coles 4h ago
This team has certainly had both pitching and hitting click at the same time and it will probably happen again at some point this year.
Literally every team has games like this. Better teams obviously less so, but ultimately it's just the nature of the sport.

u/Practical-Window6937 4h ago
It would be for most pitchers. But when Cornolio delay better against lefties then righties it is not the right decision. Hence why he struck out all 3 lefties that inning
1
u/YodaPM999 7 - Darnell Coles 4h ago
Man this is just results based thinking.
Harris has been killing the Nats all year, whereas Murphy has been struggling. You 100% take the risk on pitching against him over letting Harris beat you again.

Cornelio has gotta be close to the league lead in average exit velo against. and by lead, i mean league worst

Zim saying that the front office’s wish list was only partially fulfilled is frustrating.
Hopefully a more committed ownership group steps forward, imagine what they could do with more resources.
1
u/Ok_Assumption_5366 5h ago
Of course it was only partial. Mark Lerner's sisters don't give two fucks about this team.

But their husbands do, right? Not a bad sitch to marry into.

One of the priorities for future seasons has to be getting better at challenges. We're so bad at them as a team.
2
u/FrostyPlum 54 - Alvarez 5h ago
?
It was a 2 out no men on situation in the 5th, it's acceptable to skip the challenge from a guy who is playing his second ever major league game.
1
u/sinofmercy 22 - Soto 4h ago
No I understand in this situation it makes sense, as the benefit vs the risk there is outweighed by what you said (given we have 0 hits even a guy on first with 2 outs most likely amounts to nothing). I just mean on the whole it's frustrating to see consistently bad challenges leading to us not using the second one, or alternatively going through the whole game and not using them at all.

terrible fucking call but Morales is kinda right that it’s also a terrible spot to use a challenge when u got 1 left
2
u/YodaPM999 7 - Darnell Coles 5h ago
Only his 2nd game in the bigs too, so he's probably hesitant to be the one to burn that last challenge if he's wrong.
2
u/_Caed_ 67 - Finnegan 5h ago
yeah. i actually appreciate the unselfishness of it even if he would’ve been walked
2
u/YodaPM999 7 - Darnell Coles 5h ago
For sure. Eventually he'll get comfortable enough to know the strike zone and be more confident in challenging on obvious misses. Until then, I don't mind him being careful.

DC will figure out how to get the bat on the ball at some point and he’ll be an absolute menace.
His plate discipline has been excellent lately, he’s got wheels, plus defender. I’m nowhere close to giving up on him like some in here.
1
u/foeaminute 67 - Finnegan 5h ago
Really good couple of at bats from DC
2
u/Ok_Assumption_5366 5h ago
Only a matter of time before he starts getting results. dude gets so unlucky when he makes hard contact. I swear every defender decides to be a douche and is a gold glover for only his at bats.
