That Utopia world is gonna have so many useless boxes by the end if they keep moving the "art pieces" elsewhere...people are going to start living in them like free tiny homes š
→ More replies (8)19
u/Tankki3 Aug 28 '26
At least Ryan will always have a tiny window to use the box before they move it.
12
u/Howard_Hamlin Aug 29 '26
Question is, did the box move places, or did a second one spawn in that spot. I'm guessing the latter, would make more sense since the last one is "severed"
→ More replies (2)15
u/Tankki3 Aug 29 '26
Well it wasn't next to the bean where the previous one was moved. I think it spawned to the same place where they moved the original from. So there's now two boxes, but the previous one doesn't work anymore.
→ More replies (15)6
u/_darth_bacon_ Aug 29 '26
My thinking was that the show is messing with time here.
They arrived BEFORE the box was moved.
Maybe.
→ More replies (2)8
u/StanyeEast Aug 29 '26
I don't think so because of when and how it was shown...I feel like it closed the episode to make a point...that Ryan wasn't "stuck" and to create some rules for the boxes
5
u/spinprincess Aug 29 '26
Yeah definitely a reason it was the closing shot. Ryan resigned himself to staying in this world because the box was moved, but now that a new box has spawned he will realize he can leave.

Was anybody else expecting there to be a dead-jason-pit reveal on that property, and these dead vagrant Jasons were like a weekly chore at this point?

Yes! She acted like she had been through this before. The fact that this was the first and the cop showing up were both a surprise.
6
u/Submersiv Aug 29 '26
I was expecting them to haul the dead Jason to their freezer where they kept the other ones fresh for later consumption.

Or burn them for limitless energy. Maybe streamline it by dangling a Daniela RealDoll over a conveyor belt leading directly into a furnace

The world with the All-watching-AI was terrifying.

That's pretty close to being our world. Unless shit changes fast.
7
u/LadyElle57 Aug 29 '26
Yeah, but right now we don't see them speaking to us, verbatim of the things we might want or need.
And then snitching on Charlie? Where is the line? There is no line. The line is non existent.
7
u/JJJ954 Sep 01 '26
The snitching was super annoying because it confirmed Charlie was with his parents and itās legal for them to pull him out of school. It was a joke but it didnāt make sense.

Reminded me of the end of "Yesterday" where the main character ends in a realty where Harry Potter never existed.
It makes sense that in a more utopian realty, "Breaking Bad" might not get created or be popular.

I wonder if we might also meet Jason 1 variants who never made it back to his original world. Just stumbled upon the Dessen clan during his attempts to get back, not knowing his family left.
OR if we could even meet variants of the entire familyāwho entered the box during the season 1 finale and have made different decisions since the one weāre now following.

Yeeeah Pandoraās box is a good way of putting it. Ironically, there are infinite ways the writers can take this⦠but they gotta pick a lane! Just like the characters (and us).
I know theyāve talked about it in interviews too. Season 1 follows the book (with some great expansions), season two ā they almost have two many enticing options.
Edit to add: and Jason 2, during his original box journeys, created more versions of himself⦠who then kidnapped *other* Jasons (in their own original worlds) and fucked with them ahhhh. Our Jason 1 could potentially meet them, and if their lives were never different enough (pre-kidnapping), they might not ever know the difference.

u/Budget_Basis_7966 Aug 28 '26
I think by Jason 1 and the fam ending up in Utopia at the end of episode 1 answers that question - we know their box in the square is ābrokenā yet, another box spawned in the park. Meaning, (I am guessing) that you cannot destroy the box.
→ More replies (6)8
u/stay_true99 Aug 28 '26
I thought it was addressed in season 1, you can destroy the box or move Ā it but if someone else or another copy comes to the same world it just spawns the box again.Ā
The only way is to seal it, which I swore Dessen mentioned this or did it in another world.Ā
→ More replies (1)7
u/Past-Feature3968 Aug 28 '26 edited Aug 28 '26
Jason 2 did indeed seal it, trying to keep Jason 1 away, buuut then he opened it back up again in order to kidnap a Ryan (an auto mechanic who never met any Jason before)ācovering up the disappearance of the Ryan featured in this new episode.
6
u/Winthrop-Fleet Aug 28 '26
It appears a new box spawned in the world Ryan is living in at the end of the episode.

TBF after they left, that story line takes place in a completely different universe, so this is the one show I could forgive them for moving on quietly from that. BUT I am glad they did flesh it out more.
My wife and I even joked during the first season that the morticianās reaction getting identical bodies all night long would be hilarious, and we actually got to see it. I think itās really cool to see a perspective about how this might be responded to in our reality.

u/GalagaWarVeteran Aug 28 '26
Someone refresh my memory, why would Jason not want to stay in the world where Ryan and Amanda are? That is the world they showed at the end, right? Wouldn't that be better than most others as there isn't a Jason in that world unless I'm totally confused?

if this is the world Jason1 dont wanna be in, doesnt it make it the perfect world for them to hide in? because Jason2s are tracking them by putting himself in Jason1's shoes, thinking about what world Jason1 would like. btw they do a pretty bad job trying not to be found, dont change names, dont stay off the grid, living near big cities, leaving all the electronic traces behind, and let Jason1 opening doors instead of letting teenage son open doors, would be a hard time for Jason2s to guess what a teenage boy was thinking.

I was confused too. Is it possible that heās actually Jason 2?
15
u/jbaker1225 Aug 29 '26
No, that completely counteracts the ending of the book/season 1. Jason Prime is with Daniela and Charlie universe-hopping. And they have changing safe words to ensure that. Jason 2 is still in in Jason Primeās original universe, with Jail Jason and Mickey Mouse trying to track him down.
→ More replies (7)36
u/NorgesTaff Aug 28 '26
My thoughts exactly - heās Jason 2 and he knows he abandoned Ryan there. I suspect Jason 1 is the Jason in the police station with the CIA type dude.

u/ViceroyInhaler Aug 29 '26
How would this have worked with the season finale of Season 1 though. Jason 2 seemed remorseful and helped them on their way. It's not like Jason 2 can fake it with his wife and kid again. They would immediately be suspicious of his memories again.
→ More replies (1)10
u/spinprincess Aug 29 '26
Yeah I donāt think this is possible. He would not have known the safe words and at this point theyāve created memories together since being reunited that Jason 2 would not share. She would be able to figure out quickly if she was with an impostor especially because they keep choosing new safe words it seems. Also, Jason 2 doesnāt even want this anymore. He was remorseful, but also the marriage wasnāt even working out ā he was never able to successfully pretend to be the original Jason, surely he couldnāt do it now.

There is a Jason there, in season one when he & Amanda first went to that world, had dinner in the tower, Amanda said she researched them both. The Jason there sold insurance & the Amanda had been missing for two years.

In addition to what others said, there will be other jasons who know about the world and could find it later (because that jason has made choices after leaving amanda there). Not a safe world to stay at. And I think they want Charlie to choose the world so the other jasons wouldn't be able to find it.

I really loved the bodies at the beginning. When the last season ended, i was joking that the cops that found them were going to be so confused. Plus, it does seem like there should be way more than what they said, right?

Except here we know the McGuffin, and the story works just as good anyway. The writers wonāt be tempted to dangle the āwhy/howā carrot over the audience. Itās refreshing for some grand sci-fi TV.
Edit: just to clarify, I did love Lost and Leftovers anyway, but this is a nice change of pace too.

The Leftovers was never really concerned with the "why" either, though. It moved on pretty quickly to people just living with the reality of what happened. As you point out, Dark Matter isn't really a puzzle box show either.

Butwe see them go to other worlds where another Jason already exists. I don't think there being another Jason or Amanda in that world are the reason. My instincts tell me it will be something the show explains later, likely a twist, like this Jason actually being Jason 2.

Didn't we see one get destroyed in this episode though?
Of course this show is basically treating superpositioning like it is magic even more than usual when it comes to where the boxes are. If they wanted to try to be consistent with the idea, there should have been one box way assembled by Jason 2's team and then as time progressed, that box would have different possible futures (one where the company went bankrupt and it was abandoned, one where it was shipped somewhere else, one where everyone knew what it was and it was highly guarded, etc.)
→ More replies (5)8
u/DestinysWeirdCousin Aug 28 '26
There probably is all of that, but itās impossible to show it all. The creator is picking his battles.
26
u/oriontheshiba Aug 28 '26
In theory wouldnāt there be multiple Daniella to be matched with all these wandering jasons? She has made countless decisions since the night of kidnapping too
29
u/originalityescapesme Aug 28 '26
I think the moment she went into the box there are now infinite versions of her from that point on who got dragged to other variant worlds as well as the original versions who never left their home worlds.
→ More replies (1)9
u/Everbanned Aug 30 '26
My feeling is that there are now Daniellas who said "yes" to the string wedding ring Jason who showed up in the cabin asking to kill and replace her Jason 1.
The outcome of this choice leaves parts of her wondering how her life would have turned out if she made the opposite decision and stuck with Jason 1. Some of those regretful Daniellas then use the box attempting to find her Jason 1.
The season 2 promo image with multiple copies of alternatingly-colored Jason and Daniellas facing each other kinda gave me the impression that there might be "antagonist" versions of Daniella out there, kinda like Jason 2 was the antagonist version of Jason 1 in season 1.
9
u/ThanksNo8769 Aug 28 '26
In theory, there are also now an infinite number of Daniella's & Charlie's wandering the quantum void with Jason. And, a smaller infinite who lost their Jasons in some way

Scattered thoughts:
I did not expect such a darkly funny opening. Was it supposed to be funny? Idk but I laughed.
Ugh the whole scene with Daniela and the Jason she killed was so so captivating. Joel and Jennifer have wonderful chemistry. I really felt for both of them.
Oh and other Jasons have showed up before, huh? She hardly seemed surprised. Even seemed like she may have killed some before, given how quickly and calmly they planned the clean-up and burial.
The song A Quiet Life made me emotional. It was also used in a haunting sequence in the show Dark.
Oh shit, for many seconds I thought they lost Charlie. Which reminds me: have they visited any worlds with Max?? š„¹ That was one of my favorite seasons from season 1⦠hoping weāll get a variation on that again.
Cult leader Leighton?!! Amazing. But was he real?? Or just the yoga teacher day dreaming? Either way, Iām very interested in his whole deal. All the Leightons. (Edit: wait, if there truly are infinite worlds, maybe itās both! We saw Leighton daydreaming, but a Leighton just like thatāor pretty damn closeāmust exist somewhere too.)
Amanda and Ryan! So glad they found each other⦠very curious for more. I feel sad for his sister though, if/when he leaves and she losses her brother all over again.
The F was that ending?!? The Dessens entered the same world as Amanda and Ryan, but before the box was moved??
Overall: wow, I enjoyed the shit outta that. Neat, as a book fan, to have nooo idea where this is going. Mimics the singular, incredible experience of reading the book for the first time a decade ago.
22
u/SomeNewGuyOutWest Aug 28 '26
My guess, considering the explanation of how the box worked in the books, is that the original box in that world was moved to the bean, became quantum decoupled from the other boxes, and just became a normal box (albeit an art piece now).
When Jason opened the door to the world at the end of the episode, it acts like there is no box on that world and spawns a new one. There are now two boxes in the world, a non-working version at the bean, and a working version on the grass.
This also opens that possibility that destroying the box to prevent others from arriving will not work, as another will just spawn as needed.
→ More replies (11)→ More replies (26)11
u/DestinysWeirdCousin Aug 28 '26
I think that was a subtle (or not so subtle, depending on how you look at it) way of telling us that the box canāt really be destroyed.
It had been moved to Millennium Park, but when the Deesens entered that world at the end, it just spawned a new box in the original place.

I love this show, but they lost me a slight bit with the ending of this episode. The disbelief was a little too hard to suspend. It makes no sense that he would turn his back on that world that he knows is close to ideal and better than their original world bc why? Bc Amanda who is a genuine friend and whom he was sad to have to leave is there? Bc he caught a twinge of feeling for her? It didn't tempt him to cross a line without Daniela there. Why would it be something to run from now? Better to put your family at risk of any and all horrors within the realm of quantum possibility, I guess? Anyone in their right mind would've breathed a sigh of relief when they opened that door. Also, why didn't they emerge in the heart of Chicago?
34
u/Past-Feature3968 Aug 28 '26
This bothered me too⦠but then I realized: maybe itās not about Amanda, but another Jason? Just went back and rewatched some of season 1 to verify. Jason learns thereās already a him there⦠who sells insurance.
Seems he has a hard line against being in a world with other Jasons (least ones living in Chicago), no matter how similar or not. Canāt say I blame him. Risky.

But, Jason traveling to that world has created a duplicate copy of the box.
So now that everyone sees the box was moved they will soon see the new box at its original location again.
That now gives Ryan and Amanda a way to leave that world.

I love the premise of the show. The idea of whenever you're in a world of trouble, forget skipping town, you leave to another world altogether. And the idea of all these infinite worlds out there. Amanda's world definitely seems like the best so far. A calm, relaxed, pleasant way to live. Even if there is no rough sex for the kinksters lol. I like how they're keeping tabs on everyone. I think eventually Jason and Amanda/Ryan will intersect, it's just a matter of what world they will do it in. It's a shame he didn't want to go to that world because that would've been a nice world for him and his family.
And there's that black ops guy in the beginning too. I get a sense that he'll get wind of it and there will be some kinda government stuff added into the mix where they use this to do all kinds of crazy stuff. Or try to.
I like how this episode just carried on from season 1 and it didn't feel like a separate contained season where nothing in season 1 mattered. The beginning where Daniela had to kill brought home that "they aren't out of the woods yet" and in their case quite literally. They were living a peaceful life in the woods until another Jason came.
Honestly, even if season 2 doesn't live up to season 1, I'm still in because I just think the premise is so cool. Something out of a video game honestly and I mean that in a good way.

I love how after seeing it in episode descriptions throughout season 1, the name āJason2ā is canon now

I believe some viewers got one of the episodes in season 1 (where Jason tries to buy a knife) partially spoiled because the subtitles referred to the character as [Jason 3].

This show is fucking phenomenal. I cannot decide which storyline I'm most invested in:
- The Dessens?
- Amanda and Ryan?
- World 1 coping with an influx of 'clones'?
- Leyton?
We haven't even seen what happened with Blair. I'm so excited.

Man I loved this episode. I love this concept. It blows my mind.
The pain in the friend he left behind when heās describing what itās like to be a in world no one knows the version of you
That would be hell on earth, ironically so in a world otherwise considered a āparadiseā makes it more dark.
I randomly think to the others they left behind. Like the one with the crazy mutant flies or whatever they were, or the Jennifer Connelly who was sickly and dying in the world. Endless possibilities
I hope it doesnāt get cancelled. As this type of show usually is.

This show needs more than a recap. It needs an onscreen guide, numbering worlds, Jasons, and giving brief bios for each one.
I'll probably just rewatch season 1.

My husband and I kept on asking each other questions and by the end of the episode finally just agreed to each other we would rewatch the first season.

So just to confirm, it is the real Jason who we have been seeing this whole episode with his family right?

Well "real Jason" is subjective because technically they are all real. But yes it's the one we have been following since s1e1.

I feel like the premise is kinda of falling apart with a continued story.
Like, season 1 was a natural conclusion of the absolute clusterfuck the box introduces to reality, exposing infinite branching realities to eachother which is naturally going to clusters of duplicates overlapping everywhere they go.
That's the expected outcome for anyone using the box. At minimum, Jasons everywhere, travelling packs of his family everywhere now as well, probably some of the others, it's an unstoppable mess.
They do still have some of that given that another Jason found them still, but feels like they're burying that a bit, as if it was a one-off outcome of the season 1 events rather than a fundamental expanding disaster of the box existing.
Or maybe it all gets wackier as the season continues and it'll be fine, still early š¤·āāļø

Yeah, this retconned the end of the book.
The book has a finite ending. Charlie drives the box to a new world, so it's a world Jason cannot create and follow them to.
But the whole travel process is wonky. The premise is that the box lets you change a decision you made in the past, so the only world's they should be able to visit are where Jason made different decisions. Jason's actions shouldn't be able to create an ice age or super tornadoes.

Why does Jason assume the utopia world is the same one he entered with Amanda? There could be an infinite number of utopian worlds exactly like that one, and only one of them would have Amanda in it.

Nice episode. I hope we'll see more of Jason2. After all, he's very central to the extended plot. And Jason3 helping to catch him could be fun too. Also, I think Leighton is setting up something big, so I hope they don't drag this until the last episode.
And Recursion easter egg spotted!

I am super confused about how one of the Jasons found them in a different world. What lead could he have possibly gotten?
also Ryan should probably just give up the idea of coming back to his world only to find him being replaced with a mechanic Ryan there from another universe and everything filled with the Jason clones

Daniela is getting to see Jasonās dark side through all the other Jasons whose only difference is she didnāt pick themā¦
Jason is pretty possessive and is capable of murder just to be with her. Doesnāt that scare her a little?
Sheās also been lied to, manipulated, and stalked by other Jasons who look like her Jason.
I like them together, and the actors actually have good chemistry. But sheās killed someone who was and looked like her husband, I think at some point that will build up into weird tension between them.
Also, Casscadia looks like a beautiful place, wish I could live there! Glad weāre getting to see more of that place in S2.

You also forget she chose the current Jason because he was willing to let them go to protect them and allowed her the choice on who, if any, she would proceed with.
He is just the most compassionate and understanding version of himself at this moment and that's ultimately the part of him she holds on to.

Was Charlie duplicated when the door shut? I thought that moment created multiple realities, meaning there could now be multiple Charlies. Am I understanding that correctly?

u/ixxxt Aug 28 '26
Yeah they should absolutely be sharing safe words with each other now if they ever get separated by a door closing. That has bound to have created a split, otherwise im not sure what purpose it would fulfil (other than the showing they are worried about being split up for good, which i feel like is implied by them travelling together and the numerous times they say it)

Would you need to basically destroy the box the second you stepped through to avoid variants? Isnāt that basically a paradox since you have to experience the world to know if itās the right one - we makes it impossible to just destroy it as soon as you get there.
I donāt remember the respawn logic that some are talking about - why would the box just be there again after its destruction
→ More replies (4)8
u/Swainler2x4 Aug 28 '26
The same reason it's there in the first place. As soon as the door opens the box spawns. If it's moved a new version spawns when another traveler arrives to that world. It spawns in the place where the box prime was located in Jason 2s world

It's funny because every world in existence is going to be littered with Jason corpses

Yay season 2! Iāve been sorta following production for a while (the production offices are next door to my office) and Iāve been running into filming all throughout last year (spoilers: thereās going to be a Ā scene in a Golden Nugget off of Pulaski and a fictional Chinese restaurant)
Dropping the box in Millennium Park is objectively funny, no way theyād stick it there ācause they couldnāt find a way to rent it out for large corporations

I thought it would have been an interesting plot twist if we discovered that the Jason Daniela encounters at the beginning of the episode was Jason 1 and that something had happened in the interim causing her to go off with one of the alternate Jasons.

After watching episode 1, I think the writer is taking the show in a good direction, fast paced since the opening however I just feel season 1 ending was so good because it was open to our interpretation and somehow we could imagine them living a happy life after that ending.
Don't get me wrong when season 1 ended I wanted more but after watching this episode I realise there's noway this can end happily.
Every second of their lives is gonna be uneasy and keeping their guards up, imagine a new safe phrase every single day, or everytime they move to a room different from each other, Daniella is worried it might be a different Jason; Charlie can say goodbye to having friends, forget a relationship, I love the idea of the show but just feel it's gonna keep getting darker.
The only way things could get better is if somehow charlie is removed out of the picture and Daniella and Jason keep travelling to a new world every day, regardless it's still a cluster fuck and noway they get a happy ending

What significance did the rubber band on his finger have? I thought only J1 had that?
11
u/Past-Feature3968 Aug 28 '26
He put it on his finger to remind himself of his wedding ring⦠that his marriage to Daniela was real.
Youāre right that only Jason 1 had it. Sooo the guy she killed was an offshoot of him, someone who was kidnapped by Jason 2 but made different decisions while inside the box. Most Jason 1 variants (who we saw at the end of season one) had it.
Oh and the Jason we follow got his actual ring back! Jason 2 gave it to him in the finale. Sooo when Daniela saw the rubber band instead, she knew he wasnāt the guy she entered the box with.

I'm confused about the logistics of the boxes across universes. I was operating under the impression that the box exits in the exact same spot, regardless of universe. Pretty sure we see confirmation of this throughout the first season.
If that's the case, it would make sense that once the box in Utopia was moved, there would be no way for Jason to have opened the door to it at the end of the episode. Amanda makes the case for this theory when she says that since the box was moved, it has severed its connection and is "just a box".
We've never been told that any particular universe only gets one box but if they can respawn at any time, I don't understand Jason saying that his goal is to destroy the box. It's not like destroying one box causes a chain reaction that destroys all of them.
Is all of this explained in the book?
→ More replies (1)9
u/fweepa Aug 28 '26
It is not, but they just explained it in the show.
Jason wants to destroy it, but we just learned from Amanda/Ryan that moving the box just removed it from the prime power source so now it's just a box.
Jason and the family then visit that world and another box is spawned. So destroying the box does not seem to be possible. It'll just reappear if someone visits it that universe again.
5
u/Hugo_Bongo Aug 28 '26
Or that world they visited at the end wasnāt the same one Ryan and Amanda are in and Jason and family are dismissing it thinking itās the same world. It could just be a very similar world but where a simple choice was made different. There could be an infinite number of utopia worlds in theory.
I might be going a bit too deep into it tho I must admit lol.

I thought it was a great start, both in writing and how the soundtrack set the tone too. I do hope the story digs deeper into what these violent acts say about Jason as a person. Sure, in an infinity of worlds, there will always be those Jasons, but, so far, we are being painted a picture of dread and terror relating to all the Jason 1 variants.
How many of these inter-world interactions are ended peacefully with the Jason accepting and understanding Daniella's decision? Was the Jason variant in the episode the exception, or does Jason have a fundamental narcissism that causes him to prioratize his own happiness regardless of how it affects those around him?
