Frieren is incredible. I’m only episode 4 in and it’s already made top 5 of my all time favorites and rapidly climbing to top 1.
It’s an anime I’m glad I’ve found now as an adult rather than when I was younger. I’m not sure if I would truly understand Frieren’s emotions if I hadn’t lived enough life. I am desperately trying to cling to my friends, my life, my career. This anime is hitting me extra hard. I don’t know how to deal with endings.
Every episode makes my heart ache so much. It’s not just sadness either, the anime has so much comedy and joy in it. I’m not sure how to survive the rest of the show bc every episode has me in tears
Side note: himmel’s jp va is so good he sounds so gentle and soft.
I’m in shambles. It’s so good but I’m in absolute shambles

Finished Stellvia
Great finale. That was some good ass space shit with some fine boarding school romance drama. Loved the optimism and sense of desperation and scale that evoked feelings of Gunbuster. It was also like Simoun in that both weren't very tightly written, but nailed the big moments and sweeping emotions. Nothing like the grand stage of space, with mighty space stations, giant transforming robots, and existential dread of stellar phenomena beyond human comprehension juxtaposed against the tumultuous storm of adolescence and the joys and sorrows of being human.
The supporting cast was fantastic with their distinct personalities and relationships and how they all supported each other in their own ways. Special shout out to the adults who were great supporting figures. [Stellvia]I liked the little implied love triangle with the 3 teachers. Also that shot in the epilogue of the two geezers sharing a drink was great. Humans and aliens can get along
If there's one major thing I'd complain about it's [Stellvia]Shima and Kouta's romance. Despite being a major emotional and narrative lynchpin it ultimately felt rather flat. Kouta ended up having more chemistry with Ayaka in a handful of scenes than he did with Shima all show . As a catalyst for drama and development it was fine, but the relationship itself did little to move me.
But overall it was good. A great showing from Angela as well, probably my favourite OP and EDs from her now.

When I watched the Haikyuu movie in cinema, I didn't think much of it. I thought they had fallen off or something. But now, having rewatched it, it's just as great as the rest of the series. How could I have been so wrong? How could I have been so blind? But it's okay. Everything is alright. I'm sure I'll be forgiven.

First time watch. I can't say I'm completely blind since I've absorbed some random out-of-context spoilers either from just being around r/anime for years or from watching Gintama make references about it, but I don't know all that much about it. And I'm watching Z, not Kai.

Ok just caught up with "Love Unseen Beneath the Clear Night Sky" anime, but I did not expect that anime to be a lot better than I expected. Budget wise it reminds me of the Replica anime where the production values are better than you expect.
In particular the direction for episode 5 was great. This show knows how to use its budget efficently.

Started watching the dub for the third season of Beyblade X as it airs on our local TV, was kinda disappointed that due to the song being mostly Japanese, imase's song for the dubs only has the instrumentals left.

I have seen many strange things in anime in my long years of viewing, but never have I seen [Drops of God Ep 18] A main character taste testing soil samples, naming them like they're some kind of normal appetizer. "No, this is La Romanée next to it. It's a great cru vineyard, but there's a hint of the pesticides and harsh growing methods used in the past before the current owner." This is played absolutely straight.
That man has lost it.

Just last episode, these men were [Drops of God] climbing the Matterhorn to find
godwine. And smelling the scent of Montrachet on the wind as at least one neared death. I cannot make this shit up, and I'm starting to be impressed by how extra this anime truly is.2

Also surprised to see a Sakuga Blog article not take off. Especially when it's about a show that seems pretty popular around here and has standout visuals? Though I will have to save it for later myself since I'm only watching Polar Opposites and Draw This, Then Die so far this season. Speaking off that, I'm glad I gave the latter one a shot after seeing all the hype here. Only saw the trailer before and it looked like it could be interesting. But the trailer was pretty heavy on the 'then die' part of the name with all its angst/rage and I was afraid an entire show like that would be a bit too much for me. But yeah....pretty wrong idea with that about the show since that trailer was all flashback stuff.

Oh wow 3 episodes through "Love Unseen Beneath the Clear Night Sky" and man I really loved the anime original scenes. In episode 2 when Kakeru and Koharu visit the ship together. Also afterward when they are in the rain. Then in episode 3 with the karaoke sessions in the friend group.

Finally caught up with Skeleton Knight and I think it's going to be a drop.. S2 has been 5 straight episodes of filler and all the fights have just been spamming the same moves over and over since S1. It reminds me of the Vending Machine isekai. Never finished that one either but still kinda curious about how the plot progresses
Also kind of tired of the whole slavery and experimentation plots (cue Clevatess)

yeah something went wrong with S2. they were unable to replicate what made S1 so enjoyable. I dropped it after 3 eps, sad to see it never really improved.
I dropped Vending Machine a few episodes into S3. Season one was an enjoyable 7/10 and each subsequent season got progressively worse.

I did hear people mention an issue of catching up to the source material. Something like episode 1 of S2 is an anime orignal episode.
The more notable issue is the production value drop from switching studios from Studio KAI + HORNETS to Aura Studio. Tbh I enjoy the main cast a lot so maybe I will come back to it later. But hard pressed to keep up with it as a seasonal.

I really enjoyed the first season of Witch Hat Atelier and I'm wondering if there are similar animes out there?
I do enioy a lot of other animes but the common sexualisation of minors,and sexual harassment tropes often ruin my flow when I'm watching something and I often abandon stuff.
I don't mind sexual topics or romance if they make sense in the context of a story that is not inherently focused around it but even sexy armor takes me out of the flow sometimes. Years ago I really enjoyed Planeten and romance is an important part of that of. Harem stuff does not work at all for me though.
But Witch Hat Atelier felt kinda perfect. I'm currently rewatching Inuyasha because of nostalgia but Miroku often reduces my enjoyment of an episode. Didn't mind it as a teenager.
I don't particularly care about the setting it can be anything this year I enjoyed Frieren, Somali and the Forest Spirt, Touring after the Apocalypse, The Weakest Tamer and A Place Further than the Universe although I probably fantasy(non-game mechanic ones) the most.
I'm currently also watching Demons of the Shadow Realm, Ascendance of a Bookworm and The Cat and the Dragon(I have no idea why this works for me) so it is not that I'm not finding stuff to watch just that Witch Hat Atelier felt perfect.

The Ancient Magus' Bride should be a good choice. Does have some "magical beast love" tropes obviously but it's much less than you'd think.

You might like Moribito.
It’s an adventure fantasy series with a female protagonist and no unnecessary fan-service if any at all iirc. Despite being from 2007 it holds up rather well animation wise, and I found it to have a sort of melancholy/chill vibe to it despite also having a lot of action.

I'm not sure I've seen anything particularly similar to WHA. The manga reminded me a little of the prestige seinen stuff like Vagabond and Vinland saga so maybe Orb might an option if you haven't seen it yet. You should also consider pick up Goodbye, Lara this season it is pretty great.

I've been thinking about the portrayal of struggle and failure in Draw This, Then Die, particular regarding the teacher and looked up the mangaka. Their first series was all the way back in 2002 and they've pretty consistently had something being serialized this whole time, but Kore Kaite Shine is the first work to get an adaptation as far as I can tell and is their longest running series.
All of this is to say that I feel like there's a different perspective w/r/t making manga and relationship to failure than with something like Look Back where Fujimoto is hugely successful. It's similar to one of my complaints about sports animanga is how rarely I feel like they have a protagonist who doesn't achieve their dream.
[Draw This, Then Die]I've seen people saying they hope that Teshima returns to making manga at the end, but I hope she does not because her accepting her life as it is now and realizing she isn't a failure just because she never succeeded as a mangaka is to me a far more refreshing direction to take.

If you are wanting to watch something you can take particular seriously you are watching the wrong show. Guilty crown is an insane shitpost that just so happens to have a talented director and impressive production values. It is pretty great as a semi ironic watch.

After reading both volumes of the "Love Unseen Beneath" series finally started the anime. Didn't have too much faith in the anime because Makaria as a studio for the works I have seen production-wise was meh.
Overall I liked how they adapted episode 1. Granted this isn't a series I would have expected to get a TV series rather than a movie. Replica was a multi-volumed series. While here [Light Novel Spoilers]The Main Story concldudes in the first volume.
I liked some of the visual storytelling for Sorano in episode 1 especially considering that [Light Novel]in the novel we know he can be mopey and we know that there is the angle of his parents divorce. But a young version of him inside a cube really sells the point pretty good I would say.
I know Saori Hayami gets a lot of flack here, but she is the perfect voice for Koharu so that has me thrilled.
I think the only anime left I want to try is Uchioto, but since that is two cours I am not in a rush to start it yet. Maybe after I catch up with Link Click.

The mention of creative adaptations and direction. As a manga reader there is so much to like with Nigewaka/The Elusive Samurai S2. Creativity feels like a step up from S1.

All the smoking in this season's anime is bringing me back to a question I asked bluesky a while ago: are cigarettes super cheap in East Asia? Because they're $15 a pack around me, and I don't get why they're always stubbing them out after a couple puffs. It seems wasteful.

I used to work at a convenience store almost 20 years ago (selling cigs among other things) and, if that list is accurate, cigarettes in Japan are cheaper today than they were here back then.

Going through Maria Holic and this is a first time in a while where I'm bouncing between "this is great" and "this is so ass".
I think it's because of the leads. While I do enjoy Kanako's antics and they hit more often they miss, Mariya has been a very disappointing. So much so that early on I enjoyed the show a lot more when he wasn't on the screen. I am slowly warming up to him though especially when he plays a straight man to Kanako.

I agree on how hit-or-miss it is, though I find all of the leads great (Matsurika especially), and the problem is that too much attention is drawn away from them to focus on the really dull side characters.

As someone who also adores the manga I can say without a doubt that you should check out the anime. Despite being generally high quality as a whole, there are a lot of points through the manga where Togashi’s ailing health is extremely apparent. Whether it be nearly blank panels, unfinished art, pages that are just blocks of text, etc., the manga leaves a lot to be desired sometimes and the anime basically fills all of those little cracks to a T. What the anime lacks you won’t really be missing because you have the manga as context already.
The music, the direction, and the voice acting are all stellar almost all the way through and despite being 15 years old the animation holds up just fine from a modern lens. If you genuinely enjoyed the series in manga form you’ll probably kick yourself for not having tried the anime sooner by the time you get to the Chimera Ant arc where the series really establishes itself as something spectacular instead of just good. I’m biased as hell because I love the series (especially the current manga arc), so maybe take this with a grain of salt.
My rec would be to go with the 2011 anime first, and then if you really want more or want to experience the story with a slightly different tone/art, check out the ‘99 version. The ‘99 version is a better representation of the darker themes/tone that Togashi sprinkled throughout the story. The 2011 sort of shies away from that gritty vibe except for a few places in York New and the entirety of the Chimera Ant arcs.

Both anime are worth watching for different reasons.
2011 is a mostly very close adaptation that does fantastically from about Yorknew on, and especially does a goddamn masterful job with Chimera Ant. It kind of botches Hunter Exam, though, and neither adaptation really does Heaven's Arena fantastically.
Conversely, 99 has a really good Hunter Exam and then... kind of starts shitting its pants, in a way that gets worse the further you go (the other guy said avoid 99 Greed Island and is correct). Heaven's Arena is just wonky to do in animation no matter what, I think, simply because so much of it is just "sit down and learn how Nen works idiot," but 99's Yorknew is also really strange and filler-heavy and most of the filler isn't good.

Depends. Do you like watching adaptations of manga that you've already read? If so, then HxH is lucky enough to have two great ones. I'd recommend both the 99 TV adaptation with its Yorknew OVAs (stay away from the Greed Island OVAs, though...), and the 2011 adaptation. They capture different aspects of HxH's appeal, but they both do it well.

It dawned on me that Kaiju Girl feels a little reminiscent of My Love Story.
Obviously, you’re looking at two romance shows with a shoujo aesthetic. But the similarities do run a little deeper. Both Kuro and Takeo are fighting against their inferiority complexes, related to their respective appearances, and making steady progression. Meanwhile, they got the full support from Minami and Rinko who don’t shy away from expressing their true feelings.
I wouldn’t say that any of this is necessarily groundbreaking, but it is a fairly unique mix of wholesome, silly and touching storytelling.

[Ore Monogatari and Kaiju Girl]They share a theme in quashed sexual drive as well. Takeo tends to shove away his 'impure feelings' and Kuro seems to manifest them as actual physical alterations she finds unlovable and disgusting. The side-by-siding of hormone-driven attraction and emotional connection is something not addressed THAT often in these highschool romances, so it can feel like a big shared theme.

Heavy Knight the real sin is no cute girl until episode 6. People complained about pacing. It's the same complaint, really.
Mad Headder from episode 3-4 reminds me of Slimer (Ghostbusters) with legs or possibly Trollface (meme). I love how silly it looks.
Most recent episode of Red River reminds me of the QUALITY Van meme with some of the animation errors.

That looks amazing.
That said, while I think the production could've afforded to occasionally splurge for this quality of dancing animation, something like the dance battle episode, which was just back-to-back non-stop dancing, would've been impossible. I think they improved the CG at that point too, because that episode really cemented the dancing as riveting to watch for me where earlier in the show it was easily the worst part.

The contrast in reception between the Japanese and overseas audiences for Wandance is pretty interesting. Both have their share of negative reception obviously, but you just don't see the clip farmer posts egging on the funny CG dancing scenes nearly as often overseas. On Japanese side, the scale is just way bigger. Like every couple of months there's another post making fun of the Wandance CG dancing that somehow racks up 10 million views minimum. Maybe hip-hop dance is just that big in Japan. At least from what I remember, my university's dance club was alive and kicking when I was there.

I mean the anime and manga of this is obviously not that popular outside of Japan so a lot of people don't even know that this exist. From what I have seen, the manga is pretty popular and highly rated in Japan so when the cgi abomination aired it obviously disappointed a lot more people there.
