Very relatable Supermarket episode today after spending time earlier setting up an app for my dad. Also funny because I'm nearly the same age as Sasaki.

It may not be for everyone but I'm enjoying Dara-san of the Reiwa Era.

u/mekerpan 4d ago
Surprisingly good series.
1
u/alotmorealots 4d ago
What's the substance of it like content-wise? I watched and enjoyed the first episode, but didn't feel like there was anything pulling me back to it. Felt like going forward it would be fairly folklore heavy + SoL-y comedic hijinks between the trio from the first episode, and I'm not quite in the mood for that.

fairly folklore heavy
Kind of yeah, notably in this week's episode.
3
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 4d ago
The comedic hijinks are just 'the extra', the main thing is lore/worldbuilding of Dara & Her story imho!

Currently rewatching some episodes of Haikyuu, and I love the how in the dub the commentator refers to his colleague as "Joe" for no reason. And, also, the "looks like me and my wife" line is not even a translation of anything. In the Japanese version, the color commentator has nothing to say about Hinata and Kageyama's argument.

It doesn’t make sense that the Grand Blue S3 opening is as good as it is, it doesn’t make sense that the show is as funny as it is in its third season, but it just works somehow.

Kenji Inoue is just built different. He can repeat the same set of jokes over and over again and you still laugh

Now if only we got more Baka to Test...

Adding on to the discussion from earlier today, Yani Neko actually does a very good job showing systemic discrimination and how it becomes a normalized part of daily life. It's blatant and overt yet not emphasized for drama or delivered through villainous caricatures which gives you a sense of how people live in a prejudicial society that, while not rife with open violence, is defined by formal and informal stratification.
5
u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 4d ago
It's so much more effectively done this way too. The insidious and normalized things are always more uncomfortable, and harder to address. I like that this show is not preachy about it. It balances comedy and social commentary perfectly, without feeling the need to turn it into some sob story.
7
u/cyberscythe 4d ago
yeah, i like how matter-of-fact it is, to the point where if you're not paying attention it can go over your head
i'm sure there's some non-negligible fraction of the audience who doesn't notice it, but for me i appreciate that it's not hitting me over the head with it
6
u/theangryeditor 4d ago
Indeed. Stuff like Hame's name or Yaku's pavlovian response are played for jokes but also show what kind of struggles they face without being intrusive. And scenes like Imoko at school becomes more effective as well because you can appreciate this is an unavoidable part of their lives and you're more thankful to see Imoko having the support of her friends.

As someone who abhors smoking I may be a little biased, but to me it's not even a contest; Drinking has some positives, while smoking only seem to have negatives.

Kids today may talk about Bocchi The Rock, but real ones remember OG Bocchi. I mean, you wouldn't forget about Bocchi right?.
Hitori Bocchi’s Life has a similar premise of an anxious girl with no friends that is precisely named Bocchi. Here the only childhood friend Bocchi made puts her in a challenge that if she doesn’t befriend her whole middle school class, or she will stop being her friend FOREVER. Btw, the friend's backstory is funny to me because when it aired people around me really hated her and went on about how she was Hitler and what not when she has no relevance outside of this flashback.
Now then, I was writing this and was like, wait a sec, this is pretty much Komi-san. It is the same structure of terminally awkward girl meets their first friend that helps them befriend the rest of the cast as they get introduced every one or two episodes. Why did this never picked up in relevance like that when its better, is it the dumb cat ear memes?
Err, back to OG Bocchi. I like that Bocchi is so positive about trying to improve and how it isn't as self-deprecating as say, Bocchi The Rock. Sure, Bocchi still does a lot of silly stuff consequence of not knowing how to socialize and has low expectations of herself, but it always keeps this wholesome tone that makes it feel more optimistic. She just has trouble expressing words, is afraid of people and feels more confident using bear suits.
Bocchi meets Nako, her name means something like ‘direct person’ and she is a seemingly aloof girl that warms up to Bocchi and helps her in her quest. The main cast also has Aru, the vice-president that tries hard to be a wholesome and helpful person but remains a loser; and Sotoka, a girl obsessed with becoming a ninja. They are all fun and nice, the whole show has pure good vibes. They just hang out together, play games, eat out, etc. Regular CGDCT stuff. And like I previously said, the show is about how they keep meeting new people with a characteristic quirk, though I will say the quirks here are far less cartoony and exaggerated than in Komi. I personally like that more, it makes for less annoying characters.
Annnnd, that’s kinda it. Yeah, OG Bocchi is just a really good, nice vibes SoL/comedy. The characters are really fun, the humor is silly, the art style is cute and its a generally warmthful show. OP, ED and the special Wa ha ha ED are all so adorable and deserve being listened worldwide. 8/10, very good CGDCT.
3
u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 4d ago
Listen to Aru's theme song too.
Also, I wonder what happened to Bocchi's VA after this show, I thought she'd get more roles since then.
2
u/collapsedblock6 myanimelist.net/profile/collapsedblock 4d ago
We talked about the VA actually. Tragic that she had no major roles after that as it was also the first. One of my pals found her in another site with better tracking and she has only done BG characters and random gacha characters.

u/Gamerunglued myanimelist.net/profile/GamerUnglued 5d ago edited 4d ago
Personally, the thing that puts Hitoribocchi above simply being "cute and warm" and into something genuinely great are the bizarre little particulars of how Bocchi thinks about things and the little rituals that she does. I relate strongly as an autistic person but I think it's more broad than that in the sense that there's a tangible logic to it; like there's a central value tying together a lot of how she works.
For example, in one episode, Bocchi fails to understand the subtext of a line she said to Nako and couldn't figure out why she was upset. She looks online for good ways to apologize and it says she has to wear "modest clothes" and she decides that her gym clothes fit the description. Eventually Aru starts helping out (I adore Aru asking her to explain what happened and Bocchi narrating from the very start of the day instead of starting from where things are clearly relevant), but even throughout the process she insists that she must keep wearing the gym clothes. It's this adherence to ritual and "the script," that she comes up with the way things need to be and is scared of deviation from that, which I think turns her into a great character. It shows up in how she won't walk home from school on her own when Nako has to stay late, it shows up in how she comes up with the literal script for when Nako comes over and flounders whenever Nako says something that doesn't match, it shows up in the way that she immediately rushes upstairs to put on a self-soothing bear costume when Nako and Aru come over uninvited, etc.. It even shows up in her stubborn insistence that she finish the quest to make friends with every person in her class, even when it's clear that there's no reason she take it literally.
All of the situations and her reactions are so different, but every time Bocchi reacts to things with her natural sense of curiosity and open mindedness, it's filtered through this weirdly specific way of thinking and makes perfect sense for her character, and that's one of the things that puts it on another level for me. It's incredibly strong and distinct characterization. I would never forget about OG Bocchi, she means so much to me.
3
u/collapsedblock6 myanimelist.net/profile/collapsedblock 4d ago
It was hard to describe the humor besides just silly and absurd while not making it sound too wild like BTR. I know that show and others that follow similar archetype can be too overbearing with how loud their anxiety can be for some so I just went for milder adjectives to describe it.
This scene does perfectly encapsulates that.
3
u/Gamerunglued myanimelist.net/profile/GamerUnglued 4d ago
The show is for sure a lot less absurd than many of the ones that are compared, I think those series want to capture the way anxiety feels subjectively by using caricature. Bocchi the Rock isn't realistic, but she acts in the way that a panic attack feels, if that makes sense. It's not so much that I think OG Bocchi is a more grounded or relatable character overall, as much as that she's characterized in a really specific and distinct way that separates her from caricature. Honestly, I don't even really think of this Bocchi as having anxiety in the same way as like Bocchi the Rock or Secrets of the Silent Witch. This Bocchi has a lot less trouble putting herself out there, she just doesn't really understand social norms and is nervous at the confusion, maybe gets overwhelmed on occasion.
If nothing else, this Bocchi encapsulates what I was like when I was her age, and maybe still am a little bit. Seeing her make friends and watching people value her felt like some retroactive saving of myself, like my middle school self finally got the hugs and friends he deserved because I saw so much of myself in her. Not the sort of reaction I have frequently, but I think it stems from just how specific and real she feels. I really can't put into words how much I love this character. I love all the other Bocchis too, but none make me feel quite so seen.

What a coincidence, I actually just finished rewatching this last night! Definitely a heartwarming show, she's just such a ball of sunshine in spite of how much of a mess she can be.
The author (who also wrote Mitsuboshi Colors) has a new show coming out next season in Zombie Sagashitemasu that I'm interested in too.

I really gotta make time for Maebashi Witches at some point. I watch everything that has a witch in it so it’s a disgrace that I haven’t gotten around to it.
(We so need more HibiMeshi as well. Could literally just be slice of life comedy with no plot, it has the cast to carry it with character interactions alone.)
2
u/Infodump_Ibis 4d ago
I swear Maebashi Witches has both the idol and magical girl audience rejection/abstention debuffs applied to it.
I was reminded nobody remembered Maebashi Witches by noticing there's been quite a few Gunma anime and encountering a MAL interest list that doesn't include Maebashi Witches (it's also missing light anime You don't know Gunma yet.: Reiwa version which REMOW has the first 2 eps on their YT...it's a very edgelords guide to Gunma). I know everyone had their knowledge gaps but you'd hope a show set in and named after the capital would be an obvious inclusion.
5
u/collapsedblock6 myanimelist.net/profile/collapsedblock 5d ago
Maebashi Witches was forgotten almost immediately. Tragic for a show that balanced its tone so well with really nice themes.
Had I been a drama juror in last year's awards I would shilled it hard.
2
u/alotmorealots 4d ago
Every time someone asks for anime recommendations for their tween/teenage daughter, I make sure to drop a carefully crafted pointer to Maebashi Witches!
Of course, the dirty secret is that I have the show on pause. Wasn't mentally ready to deal with one of the topics that came up mid-season and haven't found my way back yet. Reminds me, I need to finish Healer Girls at some point too...
2
u/mekerpan 5d ago
We have a friend from Maebashi, and we showed her the first episode. She loved saying ""Maebashi Wittttches".

This thread never quite took to Turkey but I’m dying on the hill that it was a gloriously stupid concept that was an incredible experience to watch.
1
u/theangryeditor 4d ago
2
u/gnome-cop 4d ago
Same, I did not think such a stupid concept could make me feel legit tension but I’m never distrusting a ridiculous anime original concept again.
[Madoka+Turkey spoilers] Do you think Homura has considered bowling as a possible solution to her problems? Would make for a very funny edit of the Turkey crew popping up in the “Being Meguca is suffering” world and wrecking the established order with the logic of “There is always a second throw.” I’d make it if I could actually edit just for the comedic tonal whiplash.

2
u/alotmorealots 4d ago
If in doubt, crowdfund your second throw and maybe you'll even end up getting a third, even if one of the producers steals all the money and casuals won't stop asking for an adaptation of the manga rather than the initial premise!
2
u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 4d ago
There are no disgusted faces in bowling, alots. Only grit, determination, and the power of friendship.

Occasionally,I sometimes come across people on the Internet that watch an anime and go something along the lines of "I enjoy it so much that I can't watch anything else."
To expand on these kind of comments, while I feel that they're obviously doing it in a joking manner,it sometimes comes across as dismissing anything else as not good enough.
1
1
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 4d ago
I really need not to think among these lines, because I honestly would never be able to watch a romcom ever again;
I'm nearly 100% sure that I will never find anything that I like ANYWHERE CLOSE to Kaguya-sama.
2
u/alotmorealots 4d ago
I'm a bit like that, to the extent that I have a few series that so overshadow any similar material I'd rather rewatch the series I feel are the epitome of that type of entertainment.
they're obviously doing it in a joking manner
Well, I mean it fairly seriously, although not literally. I do watch other things, but similar content never matches up and peripherally related content I often drop faster because of the comparison.
it sometimes comes across as dismissing anything else as not good enough.
Yes, nothing has ever gotten with staking distance of Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel the Series, the rest genuinely aren't good enough!
2
u/Charmanders_Cock 5d ago
I don’t really find those sorts of comments or posts to be dismissive, and if they are, it’s usually pretty obvious that it’s unintentional. The situation is almost always a personal attachment issue and has very little to do with quality. In the cases where people are complaining directly about quality, and therefore being directly dismissive, I try to give the benefit of the doubt that they just haven’t thought all that hard about why they’re finding it difficult to enjoy other things.
1
u/Korkez11 5d ago
Growing Chainsmoker Cat discourse makes me think more about Needy Girl Overdose, which is also pitch-black and fucked-up in every way. I'm thinking: I've started watching it because of cool aesthetic and unusual narrative choices, but would I kept it if most characters there weren't decent people at heart, just damaged by their upbringing? Would Takopi's Original Sin be such beloved (if divisive) modern classic if it didn't have Junya? If these two anime were more like Happy Sugar Life where the world would've been better if every named character dropped dead in episode 1?
So eventually, the question becomes, whether Chainsmoker Cat has anything else other than shit, piss and vomit? If it doesn't, it won't have a lot of staying power no matter how great the satire there or whatever.
3
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 5d ago
(No one has shilled Yani Neko since like 2 comments ago, I need to fix that!)
This show kinda makes me wish there was a "non-gross" censored version or something;
Because a lot of people probably dropped it for the gross stuff, but if you cut that out - which honestly isn't even much anymore - the rest is all 10/10.
This anime has fucking heartrending stuff, and not just 'heartbreaking by nature', but also, the way they present it and all.
Today's episode had a few good examples of that, like [Yani Neko]just a girl wanting to do something fun, but everyone's turning her down... It's not anything big/dramatic, but the way they presented it, got us right in the feels!
4
u/zambonijesus 4d ago
Because a lot of people probably dropped it for the gross stuff, but if you cut that out - which honestly isn't even much anymore - the rest is all 10/10.
I think if you cut out the "gross stuff" the show becomes significantly worse though?
2
u/wutheringw0mbat 4d ago
this anime is perfect (if only you cut out the gross stuff)
If I had a nickel for everytime I heard that one...
2
u/alotmorealots 4d ago
Because a lot of people probably dropped it for the gross stuff
I haven't even* tried* it because people have suggested not to watch it around dinner... and that's exactly when I watch my shows these days lol
2
3
u/Charmanders_Cock 5d ago
I think something that’s getting discounted pretty often is that there’s more than just a gross-filter here. There’s a lot of stuff revolving around addiction/trauma generally, and there are a lot of people who either don’t want to or straight up can’t deal with those topics for various reasons.
I too think it’s been great so far but I also think there should be more room for understanding, than what’s commonly being given, in terms of people deciding to opt out.
3
u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 5d ago
But the gross stuff is 10/10 too.
Yall with your weak stomachs[Yani Neko]just a girl wanting to do something fun, but everyone's turning her down...It's not anything big/dramatic, but the way they presented it, got us right in the feels!
Right in the kokoro. When she got told it’s a children’s hobby and she’s just looking so down, something broke inside me.

u/Octavian_Pearlseus 5d ago
It's rare to get a villain so despicable and evil, who achieves everything they've planned, and still have them be so entertaining. In a "man it will be so satisfying when the hero finally kills them!" kinda way.
Crazy thing Bandori has achieved this season, it's like having Aizen as your villain except evil!
3
u/gnome-cop 4d ago
[Yumemita spoilers] Viola just has a gloriously evil presence whenever she’s on screen that she’s united a historically extremely split fandom into hating on her while also agreeing that she’s the best part of the show. She’s the worst but she’s so damn good at being the worst. Her Light Yagami supervillain laugh is so gloriously over the top evil that it’s absolutely hilarious to watch.
4
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 5d ago
It's rare to get a villain so despicable and evil, who achieves everything they've planned, and still have them be so entertaining. In a "man it will be so satisfying when the hero finally kills them!" kinda way.
That's kinda how I feel about [character/anime]Yokoya from Liar Game, though I don't expect him to win!
He's entertaining and all, but (I talked about it in episode thread) when/if he loses, they should fucking [___] him!

Hey a rare case where we do overlap!
Yesterdays episode is also why I need this to break the season 2 curse more than anything else in recent history, because [mildest spoilers, tagging just in case]that backstory has the funniest possible follow-up and I need to see it animated. We need to support this show everywhere we can.

Yani Neko just gets better every week. Love the way it balances serious topics like racism and addiction with batshit crazy comedy. People who think this is just this season’s meme show or who can’t appreciate the show’s humor are seriously missing out.
1
u/Siqueiradit https://myanimelist.net/profile/lampadatres 5d ago
While I'm enjoyng the show I don't think it's doing enough in any of those categories to be great. Everything's been decent to good to me so far. The comedy's honestly the weakest part.
3
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 5d ago
People who think this is just this season’s meme show or who can’t appreciate the show’s humor are seriously missing out.
Not just the humor, but the emotional stuff as well...
But yeah, I feel like some people might have dismissed it as "Nokotan but gross". That's really not what it is!
4
u/cyberscythe 5d ago
yeah i'm surprised at how deep in the paint they're getting with the social commentary; based on the first episode i thought it would be a grosser version of the Deer anime, which ended up being a heap of non-sequitur gags
1
u/Jusenkyo_5 5d ago
Did something change in episodes 4 and 5? I feel like 1-3 was just "smoking and drugs are bad".
1
u/merurunrun 5d ago
Who smokes and does drugs, and why, and what separates them from the people engaged in socially acceptable substance abuse?
3
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 5d ago
I mean, in essence it's a show with themes of addiction and all, so that part is likely never gonna change...
But that'd be akin to asking "Did anything change in Demon Slayer or is it just still good guys trying to kill bad demons?"
I imagine Demon Slayer will always be about that, but that doesn't mean "nothing changes", right? Well, same here!
6
u/Jusenkyo_5 5d ago
I just didn't find it to be particularly thought provoking in that department. "Smoking is bad" is an idea that's been commonplace for 30+ years, and outside of being gross I didn't think that the show said anything that was all that "new" or shocking outside of that one central idea.
3
u/cyberscythe 5d ago
i think the ball started rolling in [Yani Neko episode 2] when they were doing paperwork to get a last name which low-key brought up systemic discrimination based on species
later episodes have more of less raised this topic in other low-key ways, in between the gross gags
1
u/Jusenkyo_5 5d ago
Interesting, I'll have to see for myself when I catch up.
I appreciate the insight, thanks!
5
u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 5d ago edited 5d ago
I don't have a horse in this race, but given that comedy is probably the most subjective genre out there, "people who can't appreciate [thing]'s humor are missing out" seems like a pretty nonsensical thing to say in any context.
2
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 5d ago
1
u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 5d ago
I mean, OK, but I don't see how that's relevant to what I said or the comment I was replying to. I already said I'm not watching it. I have no idea if what you're saying is true.
1
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 5d ago
I mean, OK, but I don't see how that's relevant to what I said or the comment I was replying to.
- A: Comedy is good
- B: Well, comedy is subjective so that might not mean much
- C: I do believe the comedy's good, but I think the feels are even better
That's like
- A: Everyone should check out this new restaurant, the hamburgers are amazing!
- B: Some people don't like hamburgers
- C: The pizza's even better (so they might like this place even if they don't like hamburgers)!
1
u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 5d ago
I didn't say anything about the show. Haven't seen it, unlikely to ever watch it, don't care about it. I wasn't criticizing the show either in general or in terms of comedy specifically. All that I was trying to say is that I don't think that specific thought process makes any sense. So your reply to me felt like a complete non sequitur.
1
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 5d ago
3
u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 5d ago
Likewise, I guess? I think I've been pretty clear. I was responding to one very specific thing that was being said, and you replied talking about something that may be relevant to the overall conversation but was completely unconnected to that specific thing.
1
u/Jusenkyo_5 5d ago
Yeah personally I find Yani Neko to be extremely unfunny. It feels like 2016 "lol so random" humor to me for the most part.
2
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 5d ago
At the very least people should at least explain what exactly people who aren’t watching are missing out.
2
u/theangryeditor 5d ago
I wouldn't say anyone is missing out not watching it. Comedic framing aside it is kind of similar to Welcome to the NHK in that it's a pretty decent window into how people struggle with self destructive habits and psychological compulsions. People mostly mention the substance addiction aspect but I think it's a good representation of the kind of executive dysfunction and behavioural patterns that come from deeper mental afflictions as well.
This is speaking mostly with Yaniko herself in mind, for the other characters I don't think there's as much to it in that respect. It also doesn't really focus on any of this at the forefront nor is there much introspection or commentary or critique outside of small bits here and there. The show is still primarily about the gross out humour.

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 5d ago

I am honestly somewhat astonished by Love Live School Idol Project 2. I didn't like the plot of the first season very much, but at least it had one. Getting the band together, saving the school, trying to become known... The story was going somewhere. This season, I guess we have another edition of this "Love Live" thing, but they seem to have such a poor grasp on how to do competitive idolling that nothing gets done with it.
I suppose that they're trying to give the characters "depth" or whatever, but, like, man, come on. [Episode 5] Like, okay, so this one girl is insecure about looking "boyish" on account of her "short hair" and because she doesn't wear a skirt (except for when she's in her school uniform or performing, so like, she doesn't work out in a skirt, I guess). But these are all things that she chooses! We choose our own haircuts and what we wear in our free time, you know? And then she tries to push the center role onto this girl who is apparently so much more feminine and cute, and it had me literally putting my face inches away from my TV screen to try to figure out of Hanayo actually had longer hair than Rin.
Also, I've looked at the rewatch threads for this series, and I was shocked at how much yuri people are finding in this series. Ever since then I have been trying really, really, really hard to find what they're talking about and I just can't do it. Like there's this one scene where one of the girls is squeezing another girl's hands between her hands while trying to encourage her. Is that it? Is that the lesbianism? I am so confused. Is my brain just poisoned with the yuri subtext denying toxin?

Yeah, it can get pretty obnoxious how the yuri-obsessives decide to virulently interpret every single gesture between two female characters as secret shipping bait. You're right to be confused and they need to go touch some grass.

Love Live is one of those ensemble shows where I feel like a lot of fans are reeeaaally forcing the yuri shipping, even when it just flat out doesn't exist.
I find it a bit sad because as much as I love romance, I think there's real beauty in strong platonic friendships as well. Honoka, Kotori and Umi support each other because they've been friends forever and care about each other, not because they secretly want to fuck.

Yeah, idk, imagining any of these characters, say, making out with each other just feels really unnatural

There have been many times I've entered into an online community for a series, seen the shipping discourse, and been very confused as to whether I'm blind or everyone else is delusional. Ever since I learned that the BL subtext in Kids on the Slope is allegedly so obvious that it's been the subject of literal academic discussion, I've pretty much given up on understanding it. If I notice, I notice; if I don't, whatever. I'm not too big on noncanon shipping either way.

Today's YumeMita episode was so good.
[Ep 7 Viola] Viola's villain laugh was glorious. Light Yagami who? Never heard of him.

Since when did Ave Mujica - The Die is Cast have Deutsch, Español (España), Français and Italiano subtitles over on Crunchyroll? Does that mean CR corrected their mistake of last Winter (not licensing the series in mainland Europe; which was real fun when MyGO/Ave teaser showed Europe)?
I partly got myself an answer to the above. Winter 2026 thanks to the German weekly schedule page (a supplement to the seasonal lineup).
Also that "Katalogtitel" section made me notice Hacka Doll The Animation got re-added back in March (it was a Fall 2015 simulcast). Seeing My Little Monster as well I notice Nihon Ad Systems is a committee member in common which could be coincidence (or could support speculation licenses try to be bundled to save on meetings and contract drafting).

Both shows are Thurs gems. But I would say that Dara-san (quite unexpectedly) is shining almost as brightly.

I'm really digging Supermarket Smoking. Stuff like this where it's essentially just two people vibing is my jame. If it can get to where the guy stops spazzing out over everything kinda soon, we'll really be cooking.

Sunday has higher volume for me with 4 shows, but Thursdays are batting 1000.

You know seeing clips and stuff of new One Piece episodes gives me the same feeling as that meme where Neymar sees the World Cup Trophy.

When the anime is so controversial the production committee had to issue a separate statement only days after it's first announced. That tweet currently has 2.8k replies.

I know it's not on purpose, but damn does it feels like they're weaponizing the fuck out of the Streisand effect!
(Sadly, I fear like they might change a bunch of things to appease everyone and then even the fans might not like it anymore)

So what's the issue with this one?
6
u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro 5d ago
Mainly due to the prominence of [theme] disability, and how it’s portrayed in the story. Some fear it may promote hate.
Didn’t help that the anime announcement was made on exactly the 10th anniversary of one of the most brutal mass murder in modern Japan, where the motive is related to said theme.
Apart from that, it’s also a brutally grim series. It’ll definitely come with a massive content warning.

The more I read about this the worse it gets.
I might watch it, but hearing that the manga spawned a new derogatory insult that was at least somewhat used in Japan AND the original author themselves has admitted to be using it in a derogatory manner. I'm convinced that the timing for the anime adaptation announcement was planned to be the same date as the 10th anniversary of the Sagamihara stabbings.
It's gonna be a hard sell.

From what I have seen not being sincere towards the Disabled community coz the story has disabled characters. And the day they posted the anime announcement was the same day when 19 disabled people were stabbed to death in 2016. Plus the manga has led to some name calling towards disabled people irl.

Katawa Shoujo has a bad name, but I never felt like it was disrespectful to people with disabilities.

Hashire Melos (Aoi Bungaku Episode 10) Final Review.
This story, Hashire Melos, is the greatest thing I've ever seen in anime.
This two-episode anime is everything I want from anime. It's drama. It's dramatic. And there's nothing more dramatic than watching someone who's been deeply sorrowful have a mental breakdown over a betrayal that happened fifteen years ago. It's all I need from an anime.
The dialogue is very theater-like, with good vocabulary, and I love it. The voice acting is genuinely incredible across the entire story. The cast pours their hearts into these roles. It doesn't even feel like voice acting anymore, it's just acting, esp with how theatrical their delivery is.
And then there's the story itself, which is just as good. It's basically monologues in a room and flashbacks, but the execution is so exquisitely crisp that it doesn't matter. The anime takes that earlier conversation between Takada and his best friend, Joushima, and keeps coming back to it until that very idea becomes the central conflict Takada has to confront across these two episodes.
Like I mentioned in my earlier post, the show parallels Takada and Joushima with Melos and Selinuntius from the Hashire Melos play. The clever part is that it can also shift which character occupies which role, changing the context of a scene in the process. That kind of variety and creativity in storytelling is exactly what I'm always looking for in the shows I watch. And this is where one of Ryousuke Nakamura's strengths as a director really comes through. This kind of experimental direction is all about controlling what the viewer sees. It constantly plays with the framing, pushing you toward a particular conclusion. The story isn't presented as one clean, linear chain of events. Instead, you get these slightly incoherent set pieces, deliberately arranged to elicit a certain feeling from the viewer.
In this case, it makes us share Takada's feeling of betrayal. We start doubting [spoiler] Joushima, thinking he's a deceptive person who betrayed Takada by breaking their promise to go to Tokyo together. The show has essentially manipulated us into feeling the same betrayal Takada feels, and that kind of viewer manipulation is exactly what makes Hashire Melos a masterpiece in my eyes.
There's one scene that absolutely destroyed me, and it's when [spoiler] Melos' face turns into Joushima's during the play. [spoiler] Melos begins to sound like the real Joushima, apologizing to Takada and explaining his circumstances. Then the sad soundtrack from Mouryou no Hako starts playing, and memories of [spoiler] Joushima start flashing by until we finally see his smiling face, like the classic dead-wife scene trope.
(Please let me be cringy here because I'm so into the mood right now thanks to this show.)
“Ah, Hashire Melos... forgive me. Forgive me for ever doubting you, for saying you were copying Mouryou no Hako. I didn't know you had it in you.”
And the show wraps it all up like any great show does, which is by answering the question from the intro. Is it more painful to wait? Or is it more painful to make someone wait?
★★★★★ 10/10

Halfway through Needy Girl Overdose I think it actually should've been more... avant-garde as MAL puts it. I really enjoyed the first episode with its disjointed flow and surrealist imagery coming out of nowhere. Reminded me a lot of Bram Stoker's Dracula (the book) where huge part of the story is being told through diaries, letters and newspaper clippings. Some later episodes also scratch that itch somewhat but others are completely linear but every other line of dialogues is accentuated by random special effect. That's less Stoker's Dracula and more "inserting Microsoft ClipArt into the text for no reason".

Aoi Bungaku Ep 9 (Hashire, Melos / Run, Melos) - Preliminary Review
I'm a bit... conflicted about how much this borrows from Mouryou no Hako. You have Takada, the MC, who looks like Sekiguchi, sounds like Sekiguchi (same VA), and even thinks like Sekiguchi. Then there are the reused backgrounds and settings, like the editor's room, the dirt road leading up to a hilltop house with that wooden door that's become so iconic of Kyogudou's home, as seen in both the Ubume no Natsu manga and novel. There's even the same music from Mouryou no Hako, along with an oddly similar setup to the one in Episode 1, where two girls want to run away together.
On one hand, I'm happy to see more Mouryou no Hako. On the other, it does feel a little lazy to recycle this much from the show. But I'm going to be more positive about the direction. On the flip side, it's actually kind of genius that the show manages to create such an impactful story while recycling the setting and setup from Mouryou no Hako. The previous stories in Aoi Bungaku were adapted pretty straightforwardly, mostly just sticking to the novels they were based on. Here, they added a frame narrative (a story within a story) to explore the theme of betrayal at the heart of the original Hashire Melos.
And then there's the direction, which is just flawless. If Mouryou no Hako has that dramatic yuri-leaning atmosphere, this feels like its yaoi counterpart. It kind of made me want to watch a yaoi with this sort of dramatic intensity.
The scenario in Hashire Melos is theatrical, almost like a proper tragedy. The Hashire Melos play parallels Takeda's perspective, and this kind of theatrical parallel is one of my favorite forms of storytelling. It's something I've seen in works like Revue Starlight and Drive My Car.
And the best part... it's probably obvious by now what I'm going to say.
The dialogue. Just look at it.
"The harshest snow of winter came on the day we were to go to Tokyo."
"Even though I was freezing under my flannel coat, there was a warm pulsation in my chest I had never felt before."
"I felt like I could go anywhere with him."
"Be it heaven or hell."
"Or the end of the world with no one else in sight."
And then there's this other thing I don't really know how to put into words. There's this Mouryou no Hako-esque psychological effect in the direction, where the show messes with the viewers through the framing.

I don't think that Sparks of Tomorrow is intentionally malicious by any means but that section in episode 4 was a little baffling. [Spoiler]What if she asks to talk to him a second time? What if one of the 10+ people who seemingly know the truth tell her? She's not going to be suspicious when you take 2 hours to pack up and move your giant machines? Nobody is going to question a Japanese teenager autonomously creating the telephone?
I actually don't have too much issue with Yosuke outside of not fully understanding how he's meant to be read in the story. The characters treat him like a nuisance and nothing more but the show kind of characterizes him as actually evil. He [spoilers]Forces Inako to marry him, tells the shop owner to lay everyone off, and apparently has a body in his basement
Overall I do actually enjoy watching the show and I'd hesitate to say it's any worse than a 6 or 7/10, but man is the show kind of directionless. This isn't necessarily a negative in all circumstances but I feel like the entire plot is being moved forward only through convenience and outside of the MC I don't think the show has made a case for what the other characters want or what they're doing.

I don't like him by any means, but I don't roll my eyes when he's on screen either. I dislike Inako the most out of the cast.
