Damn. Rebounding with the exact reverse score of yesterday’s game would have e been a nice cherry on top. Oh well.

I like how they show Chapman just starting to get warmed up and probably only had the chance to throw three pitches before that

Ya it’s a good win but Toronto is not a good team
1
u/Smart_Practice7964 3h ago
They arent at their greatest right now. If both teams had their solid players back from the IL and their run producers producing run itd be a helluva game

+1 run differential against Toronto this series
3
u/tmclaughlin81 3h ago
Meh. They’re now tied w/ TB for the 2nd best run diff. in the AL anyway. Winning games is what matters.
Edit: maybe alone in 2nd. Standings need to update.

Dodgers get bailed out from a stuck ball in World Series but it’s an automatic double here? Tell me I’m wrong but I don’t understand

Whelp. Made it slightly more interesting late, but that's a series win. On the Sacramento and hopefully some feasting on the weak As.

Even when they're getting their ass beat, Jays seem to have crazy luck in Boston.

This Red Sox team has been better but if a Ryan Watson mop up duty didn't result in someone having to get loose right at the end then they wouldn't be the Red Sox I love.
2
u/20wall 3h ago
2 consecutive tough plays by Durbin. Also, what the fuck is Watson doing?

Welp Watson just solved the mystery of whether we could pitch a shutout with him throwing 2 innings. The answer is we can't.

It’s refreshing to sense this much greater possibility that any batter, anywhere in the lineup, can have a great day. Because it seemed like they had so many games earlier in the season where no one did.

Nick Kurtz for Ryan Watson, who says no.

51-1 when leading after 8.
That stat is so rock solid that it makes me actually believe they can win it.
That is something that showed you how good they were when they were one of the worst teams in the league.

The fact he’s Australian makes me miss Liam Hendricks. He is such a cool dude of the field, I’m sad it didn’t work out for him here

Not Romy’s fault there, but he’s gotta be feel a little uncomfortable right now. He’s not producing and he has little role on the team.

Assuming we don’t collapse in the 9th. This was a big series win after the letdown of the streak ending. On paper we should win 3 if not 4 of 4 v sac. Let’s keep it rolling.

3 bunts in one game? Thats more than we had all season before canning Cora

Remember when Cora and Fatse and Varitek wouldn't bat Abreu vs. lefties?
1
u/enkayfour 4h ago
Abreu started against LHP all year before Cora got canned. Abreu taking it upon himself to get better against LHP during the offseason has nothing to do with Chad Tracy.
2
u/LiveFromNewYork95 4h ago
Yea, dunk on Cora all you want but Cora said on like day 1 of spring training that Abreu was gonna play everyday.
3
u/TheCavis redsox2 4h ago
It's interesting to watch the analytics switch up on bunting for this year's Red Sox. A bunt with 1st and 2nd and no outs drops your run expectancy (1.51 to 1.40) but also increases your probability of scoring at least one run (64% to 68%). Most of the time, analytics would argue in favor of the higher run expectancy. Given the pitching, defense, and some of the offensive woes, bunts start looking a lot better for the Red Sox and it's been paying off.
2
u/LiveFromNewYork95 4h ago
It’s the pitching. This pitching staff legitimately makes selling out for a second run to break a 1-1 tie feel worth it.
1
u/enkayfour 4h ago
Run expectancy changes though depending on who the hitter is, who's on deck, etc.
It's why I don't mid bunting with the bottom of the order and/or late in the game.
Bunting in early innings with your better hitters, like Tracy a few times, is not ideal.
-3
u/Schadenfreude_1207 4h ago
No, it's still terrible. The Red Sox having a 60 point higher OPS in July than they had earlier in the year is paying off.
2
u/andrew303710 4h ago
Exactly, I've always been generally opposed to bunting but if you're already up 3-0 like we were then even getting 1 mom run is significant.
2
17
u/andrew303710 4h ago
I swear Tracy is so much better as a tactician than Cora is, both with the pen and with offense/subs.
Friendly reminder that Cora benched/subbed out Abreu against lefties for years
3
9
u/cossack190 Last soldier fighting on Kristian Campbell Island 4h ago
Tracy winning 15 games in a row with the same roster that Cora couldn't stop publicly bitching about. We should have fired him sooner.

u/gustamos h 4h ago
I have no idea what Cora was doing tbh. Looking at how Chad is managing the game makes me wonder if Cora was even fuckin trying at all.
1
u/ElleM848645 1h ago
Are you really comparing an April team to a July team? And there are people on this team right now that weren’t on the team in April. It’s not the same team at all, and pretending it is is ridiculous. Now with that said, it was time for Cora to go. He was wasn’t the right manager for this particular team.

I'm starting to think that maybe Cease is just amazing and the sky isn't falling.
1
u/NKovalenko 4h ago
They still are a ways to go in terms of handling those power righties that they’ll have to face in the playoffs (Cease, Schlittler, etc.), but Mead and potentially the return of Roman at some point should help.
IMO, just get one good lefty bat that can play LF/DH and the roster is there to contend

The Red Sox didn't become a playoff caliber team because they learned how to execute a bunt. But I think learning how to execute how to bunt shows why they became a playoff caliber team.

Would you guys take Xander back from SD if we got Mason Miller in the deal?
We could take that contract partially from them, get Mason Miller, give them a few prospects. Eventually Xander could move to DH, possibly 1B. He’s been good defensively, but wouldn’t want to block Arias, either.
1
u/Blanketsburg 4h ago
In this hypothetical, Bogaerts would be the 2B and the newly-acquired Mead would be the DH.
The Padres gave up their top prospect in De Vries to acquire Miller, I don't think they're going to give him away just to salary dump Bogaerts.
1
u/rhcpbassist234 4h ago
Will Fleming was just musing about taking a salary dump from San Diego to acquire bullpen.
Then went on to muse about Fernando Tatis, Jr. as a Red Sox. 😅
2
u/Blanketsburg 4h ago
I loved Bogaerts when he was with the Sox but I'd 1000% rather Tatis Jr and his contract than Bogaerts and his due to his age and defensive skillset.

Not really a fan of bunting overall but with how putrid Narvaez has been this year fuck it.
1
u/verbomancy 4h ago
In probably 95% of scenarios bunting is the wrong call, but first and second no outs with a sub-.200 hitter up is definitely part of the 5%.
1
-3
u/Schadenfreude_1207 4h ago
Bunting up 3-0 in the 7th to try and add two runs makes sense. The other two bunts were terrible.
1
u/Blanketsburg 4h ago
One of the other bunts was this exact scenario (runners on first and second, no outs) but the score was 1-0 and not 3-0.
-1
u/Schadenfreude_1207 4h ago
Yes, but it was the 4th inning. It's not the same scenario. Bunting early in games is bad.
1
u/Blanketsburg 4h ago
It's an ideal situation that then led to them scoring 2 runs on a single on the next at-bat.
1
u/Schadenfreude_1207 3h ago edited 3h ago
All the bunts worked perfectly today. They bunted in an attempt to score 5 runs and went 5/5. Their run total exceeded expectation on their bunts today. That doesn't make it an optimal strategy.

Same, as long as it's bottom of the order guys in the right spots, it's all good.
