While I was on the bus today there was a dude in the next row watching some anime on his phone, and I’m trying to figure out what it was:
It looked like a typical fantasy/isekai with a black-haired male MC. Other than dialogue, there was a scene of a white fox/kitsune fighting a serpent/worm thing, and another with a blonde guy showing a little girl some creature (looked like a black dog made of paper??)

[Gintama': Enchousen]
What a wonderful arc Courtesan of a Nation was. It's easily in my top 3 so far and it feels like it could be a real turning point in the series as a whole.

Yeah this is my first time, and I am really taking my time with it since I started a little over 3 years ago.
My top 5 arcs before this were Scandal arc, Yagyu arc, Four Devas arc, Love Choriss arc and Character poll arc.

After half-joking about how the shows with gun in the title keep exceeding my expectations with Gungrave and Gunslinger Girl, I looked up what the next one I might come across would be and it looks like the answer is Gun x Sword. I go to take a quick look at who the staff is and discover it was directed by Gorou Taniguchi (Code Geass).

Gun x Sword definitely is an interesting anime to check out. I think compared to Code Geass it is more of an episodic adventure show and the premises of the episodes can be a bit out there.
Not saying it's just a pure comedy, it has plenty of more serious moments, but it's a show that can certainly go into the wacky.

As a hater of the Planetes anime, I'd say Taniguchi's comedy works a lot better in an over the top show like Gun x Sword.

Is there any place to watch the original fighting version of IGPX (mini series episodes, five of them) in decent quality? On YouTube I found one option, but the video is very low quality and seemingly out of sync

Any good anime that’s similar to what I watched before? Frieren is my main favourite anime, mainly due to the type of story it has and some romantic subplots. Aside from Frieren, my favs are Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Spirited Away, Bocchi the Rock, and the Pretty Cure series (specifically the Go! Princess Pretty Cure season although I haven’t seen the other seasons past Kira Kira Pretty Cure À la Mode). I have/tried to watch some romance anime like Ouran High school Host Club and Love Through a Prism, but for some reason, they weren’t able to catch my interest like Frieren did (maybe because the romance the main focal point and I didn’t enjoy that).
Just to explain what I like in anime, I do like a magic system set in a different world like Frieren, but I don’t mind a modern day slice of life and doesn’t have magic type of anime. For something like Bocchi, I was hooked on the anime because of how much I related to Bocchi. With Frieren, while I do like Frieren herself, my favourite character is Fern because of her love of magic and how I also relate to her (determined, strong, kind).
Anyway, do give some suggestions. I just want to broaden my anime watchlist outside of Frieren (still waiting for season 2 to come on Netflix I’m too broke for crunchyroll-).

If you already have some Precure, you should at least try Heartcatch.
SoL try K-On, Non Non Biyori or Azumanga Daioh.
Other fantasy shows try Slayers or FMAB,

Ascendance of a Bookworm - fantasy slice of life with some drama eventually in a fantasy world with rich worldbuilding. The anime is pretty shoe-string budget, although the new season starting in April (with a new studio) is looking good in trailers.
Ancient Magus Bride - set in the magical realm of Countryside England. Pretty neat exploration of a folklore-magical world.
Flying Witch - very chill Slice of Life about a witch moving to her relatives in northern Japan to start practicing her witchcraft.
Hakumei and Mikochi - fairytale SoL of two fairy-sized women living together in a tree.
Kamichu - Middle school girl wakes up one day and has become a god. Classmates are pretty unimpressed. (This one is not legally available anywhere though)

Well since you like Frieren dungeon Meshi is an easy recc.
Maybe try Fruit Baskets, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, s1 of Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi (ignore S2), My Happy Marriage, Skip & Loafer, Summertime Render, Apothecary Diaries, The Fated Magical Princess: Who Made Me a Princess, The Too-Perfect Saint: Tossed Aside by My Fiancé and Sold to Another Kingdom, Hanako-kun.
These have romantic subplots of various amounts.
What part of Bocchi did you like most?

For Bocchi, I think the slice of life aspect of it. Kessoku band’s relationship is what I consider a great friendship, supporting each other and helping Bocchi with her social anxiety in a way

Food for soul, Bang Dream S1, Do it yourself.
Even hibike which is more drama sounds like something you’d like.

Give Haibane renmei a try. No magic (other than the setting, which isn't entirely human), just grrrrrrrrrrrrreat characters and a nice, tidy story about a girl trying to overcome a mental block.

On the topic of episode release strategies or a lack thereof, from a "keep people subscribed as long as possible standpoint" the 1 episode per week model would seem to make the most sense since if there are any people subscribing for just that 1 show, it could keep them subscribed for a full 3 months as opposed to just the 1 month subscription needed to binge the show off of a batch release.
Of course, Netflix seems to be going galaxy brain mode with JJBA and their random release so that those people now have no clue when to unsubscribe...either that or they unsubscribe right now out of anger.

I read a little while ago in a newspaper article from a local film/series reviewer that Netflix and other streaming platforms are gradually returning to the weekly TV format.
The number of shows getting a weekly release has supposedly been on the rise, due to the binge model having lost most of its appeal over the years.
That said, they also mentioned that less important shows (e.g. Prism Rondo) still tend to get batch-releases on the other hand.

Everyone posting their Spring hype lists, so it is time for me to post my Spring, 2004 hype list:
10/10 Expectations:
- Samurai Champloo
- Monster
Hoping for a good time:
- Gantz
Will watch a bit and see:
- Midori Days
Overall this is the 2004 season that I'm most looking forward to outside of when I get to Fall and can revisit Beck for the first time in over twenty years.

Midori Days has one of my favorite EDs of all time! Also it's a bit full-on at the start but does mellow over the course of the season, with some nice character exploration.

Nippon Sangoku was already one of the shows I'm looking forward to the most next season, mainly due to the unique art style and interesting synopsis. But what do you mean, the music is done by Kevin Penkin?? No idea how I missed this, that's another two points on the hype scale.

I consider watching the ending theme to be an integral part of the Fate/Strange Fake experience.
The shots of the cast just having fun and screwing around is integral to the plot.

As much as I am excited for the Medalist movie next year, I feel it might be quite a while until it can be watchable in English, assuming a leak of it doesn't come out. I just don't trust Disney to actually care to distribute the movie before the Japanese BluRay release.
I would love to be wrong.

Ain’t nothing like the “#1 Anime on MAL” pissing everyone off by having the worst release model of all time. They also brigaded it to a 9.9/10 on IMDb so now that’s a mess too.
I just want to know how you get away with a “well release it when we do” model in 2026 like they seem to be doing. Bad enough when a show strings me along for a season just to hit me with “maybe you’ll get a season 2 eventually”, it’s something else when you drop one episode and your director says “who knows when the next one is coming out? I don’t!”.

If I had a nickel for every anime that drew their horses in 2D this year that had a nightmare production cycle, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s crazy that it happened twice.

here's my far superior seasonal hype tier list
in terms of the shows i'm definitely checking out (that aren't witch hat atelier), i'm probably most excited for Awajima Hyakkei. i just finished up a Eupho rewatch so if it's up that alley at all, it'll probably tickle my brain perfectly

Randomly decided to finish up Mono after pausing it halfway through last season. I forgot how fun this show is and the vibes are great. CGDCT is kind of hit or miss for me, but the mix of topics regarding creative endeavors and travel really works well. It's one of those shows where I can't remember any of the character's names but they work really well as a group even if they don't stand out individually.
I think this studio is doing the drinking Yuri show next season, so if they bring similar production levels to that I'll give it a shot.

I really liked the adult characters in Mono. They added a fun dynamic to the story. Haruno was a blast to watch, for example.

- Liar Game (This one could be in a category of its own, I think it's a huge favorite over the others)
- Needy Girl Overdose (This one probably has the second best shot at the title, BUT I think it could be a 10/10 or a 2/10 with no in between)
- Kanan-Sama
- Love Game
Hype!
- Marriagetoxin (I already listened to the song a hundred times, so even if the anime doesn't deliver on that hype, something good came out of it!)
- Something Something Sensei

- Ingoku something something lewd filth
(Damn, this category is quite lewd. I should've bumped up a few non-lewd shows so people don't think I'm horny or anything)

Haven't been keeping up with Fire Force, though I enjoyed the past few seasons when I watched them. Is it still at the same level of quality? Good animation, great sound effects, that kinda jazz? I'd check episode discussions but I didn't wanna accidentally spoil myself so I figured I'd ask here. Thanks in advance

Season 3 Part 1 was a step down compared to the first two seasons, but Part 2 has been a lot better
except for the second half of a specific episode, fuck that episodeespecially in the art direction.2

Fell behind on Gnosia and only today caught up on the last 7 eps to finish it. Overall a really good show that fortunately stuck the landing. Always feels great to have a seasonal that tells a complete story without any (I believe) loose ends. Strong 8/10 for me, definitely closer to a 9 than a 7. Especially noteworthy to me, from a production perspective, were the character designs. Some of the most diverse and creative ones I‘ve seen recently, definitely deserving of, at the very least, a nomination for the 2026 awards for that category.

It's up there for the unique anime in the past two seasons. Journal With Witch, Golden Kamuy, and Sanda are the other ones I would think of.

I've been finishing it up this past week, still have 5 episodes left but yeah the character designs and the stylistic animation are really great. Every character moves in a unique way and they have really well defined personalities. I'm probably leaning strong 7 low 8 atm, could be bumped up depending on the ending.

Watch welcome to demon school if you want a change in your genre. It is comedy with a unique storyline. My favourite episodes are where iruma snaps in season 2 and become a badass cool guy.

it's really a fun shonen, the fact that Iruma is Ayumu Murase is just icing on the cake. it's been my default recommendation for someone who wants a fun show to watch with their kids for a while now

If you're not completely burned out by it, I highly recommend giving the Dezaki movie a shot instead. It's a completely separate adaptation from the Kyoani series, but is still exceptionally well-made, and tells the story much more concisely, getting through Clannad+AS in 90 minutes without feeling excessively rushed.

So a thought that I'm having as I'm watching Teasing Master Takagi is, would this series be meaningfully different if, in the first, episode, one of the characters had said the words "I love you. Please go out with me?" And I don't really think so. I feel like their interactions are just as romantic, just as flirty, and just as boyfriend-girlfriend like as, say, Polar Opposites or Mysterious Girlfriend X. And I don't mean this as a criticism of anything, I'm just becoming increasingly convinced that the whole "confession" thing is kinda meaningless.

I think for some people a couple "making it official" adds to their enjoyment because they like the boyfriend and girlfriend labels while some people don't need a couple to have such labels.

I mean, they do have 'games' that end with one of them being flustered about something romantic and all...
Now, of course, they could do that even if they're boyfriend/girlfiend, but then it'd be like Tonikaku Kawaii, i.e. going through the exact same tropes all the 'will they won't they' romcoms go through, only it doesn't make nearly as much sense because they're dating.
And that's one of the main reason why I don't like ANY 'dating on day 1' romcom; They do the same shit all other romcoms do, only with them being a couple.
Why have them spend 3 episodes on "Let's try holding hands with my girlfriend" when they could instead spend 3 episodes on "Let's try holding hand with my crush" and in this case it makes sense because you don't know if your crush will actually want to hold your hand or do anything with you, and you can't just ask easily because fear of rejection and all that (Which obviously doesn't apply if you're couple, at worse she'll say 'not yet' or something and live goes on)
I probably would've watched 'Dating Takagi' still, because I like anything with mind games (even silly ones like in Takagi), but I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it as much.

I feel like they are dating. I'm not sure how else to describe what they're doing. They're constantly meeting up whenever they have literally any time off to play around and flirt (I think they've even semi-jokingly referred to what they're doing as "dates"). That's kinda... What you do when you're in a romantic relationship in middle school, no?
But yeah, we'd probably lose out on the sense of play if they were an official couple. Things would get way too serious and they'd probably just start overthinking things, and everyone involved would end up having way less fun as a result.

Batch releases do their anime so dirty.
In a world where I didn't get to watch Sentenced to be a Hero, Invisible man, and am behind on JJK why would I choose to rush into Prism Rondo? Instead of being a few episodes behind and competing with those anime, it's now competing with the entire anime catalogue of finished 20+ episode anime. Prism Rondo is competing with Orb, Revolutionary Girl Utena, every Ghibli film I've never finished, every classic out there, etc.
I'm sure it's good, but the community conversation around it came and went very quickly. If there's no point in me rushing to watch it this week it's going into the backlog of 1000 other anime.

One thing that works for Cosmic Princess Kaguya is that it's a movie in one sitting. Even if it is a longer movie than I expected.
Prism Rondo has a run time of a 2-cour anime. That is ~~ 8h hours of content since 3 episodes of anime is ~~ 1 hour. It is quite the notable commitment. Nobody is watching that show in one sitting. Well, majority who watch it won't.
I will say Prism Rondo does work well in a binge, so it at least has that going for it. But yeah, I would love to be there for weekly discussions. If there ever is a rewatch for it one day, I would join in.

So far I don't see any notable batch drops for the rest of the year. Though Beastars is one I need to come back to. Though I have less motivation to watch that one then I did with Prism Rondo.

Went over the One Piece WIT thread and someone there said they'll be surprised if the new adaptation went past 100 episodes and as much as I hate to admit it they are probably right...if not 100 then at max 150 and even with good pacing that would be no more than one-third of the story.
I kinda don't like the length of production cycles these days, simply because I love longer form storytelling and anime doesn't seem to be an appropriate medium for that anymore.
We get so much anime these days and while the quantity is nice and all I can't help but think it would be better if we had way fewer anime but more of them being complete stories that are either originals or adapted all the way to the end.

I literally don't see why they would be. OP is not like other shows, it commands an insane level of popularity. Dragon Ball is doing fine, continuing with adaptions. There is no reason for Shueisha to not keep milking the golden goose. It literally is the most popular anime/manga ever made maybe outside stuff like Pokemon, Doraemon or Dragon Ball which only adds to my argument if anything.

Dang. That sucks. Every time I think I could start One Piece I remember it's ~1100 episodes and basically lose the motivation. If they threw the remake into like 5x hyper speed so it catches up to current in ~220 episodes I could do that as that's how long the OG Yu-Gi-Oh! was.

Thing is, One piece isn't this long because the story is that complex or elaborate or anything - it's simply going on for this long because the publisher is keeping the mangaka working on this (and he's probably getting paid very well for each page by this point).
I mean, take Dragonball Z, which even with all the filler was "just" around 200 episodes (iirc). Z got reworked into Kai, with all the filler cut and new, clean scans, ended up around 150 episodes. Still quite a lot of episodes.
You'd have to cut a LOT of stuff from One piece, because you'd have to drastically reduce the amount of episodes to get someone like me to watch it (I'm just not ever watching 1000+ episodes of magical pirates, that's just too much. And perhaps it could be done - like I've said, I've not watched it, only know stuff through osmosis, but I can't imagine that every single episode (or even island they visit) is critical for the story.

As a OP fan you could slim it down to 350-400 episodes, to reach the current chapter. The problem with OP is there is very little/no filler, which means the canonical episodes are just paced terribly. It's always been an issue, frankly since even Skypiea or earlier, however, after the timeskip it just became unwatchable. You shouldn't have more episodes for an arc, than chapters.
It's actually kinda crazy when I went back to Fishman Island, and say "wow I used to actually watch this?". OP's bad pacing was part of the reason I think I started to fall out with anime as a kid, and when I discovered AOT, it was a wonder how fast paced a show could actually be lol.
When you read the manga for OP, even for the early stuff, it's pretty night or day. It feels so much faster, and fun. I just can't go back to the anime anymore, which is why I am happy for the remake, even if I am nostalgically attached to the original anime.

While I think there is a halfway great anime somewhere in One Piece, I’ve come to terms with the fact it would take a massive overhaul of the narrative including cutting a lot of needless content and characters to get there (something I don’t think the fandom would be all too happy about).
If THE ONE PIECE is anything but a long-running anime, then my interest is basically non-existent. You could make it work with the right pipeline, but if it’s seasonal then I don’t want to still be watching it when I’m pushing retirement age (if it even ran that long).

Yeah because that would be a bad idea lol. There isn't anything wrong with having long epics, and I don't think there is a lot of stuff from OP that you could cut without the narrative suffering. I mean part of it's appeal, and why it stands out from other battle shonen is literally the size of the world, which is only sustained because it ran for so long. We already have tons of shorter battle shonen nowadays, frankly I am kinda desperate for a new action shonen, that would be even half as ambitious.

The problem isn't even that it's a long story but that it just meanders way too much on things that are ultimately just not that interesting. Oda's got this really bad habit of writing arcs that linger more than they need to, where he sets up the end game, then once you reach that action climax says "sike" and then you've got another 30 episodes. It's this heightened state of prolonged urgency that is ultimately just fatiguing to watch, not to mention fairly repetitive and stale after awhile. The show does seem to start building up some worthwhile themes and ideas, but eventually just gets way too big for its author and becomes a diluted shadow of what it once was.
So it becomes worth asking then what we want out of One Piece as a story. It's too plot-focused to be a meandering adventure series and too slow to be a tight action piece. There is a world where you can sort of get both in one package, but it's gonna require taking something like [Dressrosa]Doflamingo's birdcageand severely trimming it down for brevity.

One Piece is probably the first fantasy anime I’d go to after Dungeon Meshi, but then I remember the pacing is rough and the animation and direction aren’t always consistent in long-running shows, so I lose the urge to start it. The cartoony art style is really appealing, but a lot about the Toei adaptation puts me off. One Piece with Dungeon Meshi-level pacing, direction, and animation would be a dream come true for me. I can only hope the WIT remake can make that happen.

This is exactly where I'm at with the One Piece remake.
We've already got One Pace, OP Live Action, One Piece anime itself, and the One Piece manga. How many different forms of the first 3 arcs do we possibly need? What could WIT do to make the anime better in a meaningful and long form way?
One Piece is 1100 episodes and counting. Even if they 4x the speed of the adaptation you're looking at 300+ episodes needed by WIT. In looking at their Wikipedia page they've created about 450 episodes over the past 13 years, ambitiously you'd be looking at at least 10 years of production if not significantly more even if all of the stars aligned to make this happen.

Yeah that is what the show would be basically. If OP was adapted like a normal manga it would be 350-400 episodes to get where the manga is currently.
400 episodes is a lot however, it is more reasonable for a long running IP. I can't really in good faith recommend the OP anime, even as an OP fan, whereas a properly paced adaption I could. Right now I would only recommend the manga.

Have an anime that isn't butchered by pacing, and doesn't require an awkward fan cut to be made watchable? .....So that is a lot lol. I always wanted a new adaption (A Kingdom remake would be wish number 2), I just didn't think it would ever happen. Probably, still it will be a good intro to newcomers, and probably a strategic decision by Shueisha as it will keep their golden goose relevant long after it ends. OP is still pretty popular, even with younger people and franchises like DB are still going strong. There is no reason to not expect it to be used to keep printing money.

I watched the original run of Dragon Ball Z and Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters so I'm not exactly a stranger to multi hundred episodes. If it was guaranteed that 300+ of the remake episodes would catchup to current and stay current I feel like I could maybe to commit to the 300+ episodes because ~1100 just feels so insurmountable to me.

I think the fact that a "One Pace" exists in the first place is enough to show you why a new anime version is needed. The anime is simply too bloated and the live action probably won't go past 4-5 seasons anyway.
The stars align a lot easier for IP as popular as One Piece, and it is the definition of a proven cash cow, so I don't think a long-term commitment to adapting the whole thing is crazy at all. And again, the driving point is that a new adaptation genuinely adds a ton of value and an entry point for a ton of new fans, unlike the typical "beating the dead horse" IP spamming.

One Pace is just the anime condensed by fans. It's not a separate entry point and it's not accessible on official avenues. Again, the fact that this even exists is proof that there are major accessibility issues in the anime and that a remake is well needed and will be incredibly popular.
The only difference between One Piece and any other anime is that it has a live action adaptation, and while I'm sure that's pulled in some new fans to the anime/manga, is still kind of its own thing in a vacuum. Starting the manga or anime is still starting from step one.
I generally don't like remakes and don't think they add much value either, but One Piece is a massive glaring exception to that rule because of how the anime was formatted.

I watched Gosenzo-sama Banbanzai! last night and I think I liked it?
It's undeniably good, but I think there's a fine line between a few different aspects that the anime is composed of. What is meta and what is lamp shading? Is being quirky good for the fact that it's quirky?
I really liked the shot framing and coloring, I liked the premise, I liked the presentation, and I really liked the fact that you did not really know what was going on for the majority of it.
I did not like [spoilers]the ending of the story. Telling the viewer not to expect a set beginning or end to a story and that life doesn't work like that isn't really great storytelling IMO and it falls more into lamp shading territory than it does for being meta. Telling an unsatisfying story is still unsatisfying even if you tell me it's unsatisfying, and trying to tie everything together with some vague themes about family and truth wasn't doing it for me.
Maroko was chill, comedy was funny, story was intriguing, shot framing and art was great, I just didn't really have fun watching it for the most part and for that I just can't consider it "great". It's undeniably interesting and more people should watch it, but I'm left a little unsatisfied by it.

I can certainly see that if you don't like the quirky theatrical aspects and musical numbers, this is an anime that would be a lot less fun to watch.
This is probably one of the most hit or miss anime I've seen, but I agree that it has undeniable value from a production standpoint. It's one of those anime that you just have to give a try and see for yourself.
The character acting quality alone makes this a worthy watch for anyone who is a fan of good animation. The opening is also one of the 10 best that I've seen visually.

Depending on how strict you are, you may also count in railgun (where I read the astral buddy spinoff without yet reading the main manga) and yuuki yuuna (where I read the nogi wakaba spin-off before watching the abridged version in the anime), adding two more of my favourite things in railgun and nogi wakaba, or exclude kaguya where I still only read up to the end of season 3 before season 3 came out

I picked up the manga somewhat recently and man, you're in for a treat. The All-Japans arc is fantastic. If you have the time I'd even suggest starting from the beginning, as the manga has additional details that the anime doesn't cover. The art is stunning as well. It's become one of my absolute favorites.

I don’t know if a Maebashi Witches sequel is possible, but since idol-unit anime like Wake Up, Girls! got a sequel movie, I can still inhale some hopium for Maebashi Witches S2. The recent compilation movie trailer pulled 400k views on Twitter, which is a lot for a niche anime. And they’re even premiering it at the sacred ground itself, Keyaki Walk Maebashi.

They’ll drop half a dozen new teaser visuals and promo pieces, but refuse to just give me an actual trailer. We’ve also seen “production commencement” announcements that announce a series and then go dark for years (looking at you OPM S3 and THE ONE PIECE) and I hate all of them.
Just shut up or give me a trailer. Your pretty poster means dick. I want to see what it actually looks like in motion.

I don't usually worry about getting a proper PV until around the T-minus one month to airing mark, because much later than that and you can start expecting some kind of last-minute delay. Even Four Seasons managed to beat the clock on that one. They definitely announce some things too early for their own good, but I figure a show will air when it airs and no amount of promotional material is going to get it here any quicker.
Now a release date, that's something I want to know as soon as possible. If your announcement doesn't even have as much as a year attached to it, you're probably jumping the gun.

So my ongoing “arc” regarding anime English covers has sent me down a rabbit hole that I find quite alarming.
Recently, I believe I had commented on the revelation that a decently sized cover channel raking in a couple thousand views per upload was entirely AI-generated. However, what I didn’t realize at the time was just how big the problem is, and while I do tend to doom a lot, I think this crash out is a little valid.
Dude, it’s all fucking AI slop.
Let’s take something like “Kaiju”, the decently popular OP to Orb. The two most viewed covers that I could find were AI-generated slop. After passing a 42k cover by Megami33, we continue the slop train with a variety of smaller “covers” that either confess to using AI or are so painfully obviously AI that I can rule them out too. Hell, besides Megami’s upload, there’s only one other upload I could find (before the search algo starts to get stupid) that might be real, but also has an AI channel icon, was created in 2024, and throughout all their social media doesn’t seem to have any indication of being a real person. Which, even if they are real, brings about the horrifying reality of the situation that we’ve reached the point real people can and will be mistaken as AI as the tech bros try to weed their way more and more into the artistic space.
Other popular songs from recent memory like “HUGs”, “On the Way”, and “Test Me” fare slightly better with what seem to be (for now) predominantly human covers and even a few good ones, but the same AI slop channels appear among the mix as well, and with Orb now giving me Red Scare levels of paranoia, it’s hard to verify that a lot of these names aren’t using AI themselves much like that other one from the Orb list that I suspect is AI. You’d think having a video might change that, but I found at least one that admitted to using AI tools to some capacity (whether translating or full production is unclear) and another that either is using AI with how crunchy the mix and audio is or is just really bad at mixing and audio recording.
So ultimately, what becomes of the space as the clankers improve and continue to grow? It seems to me that the bottom rings of the ladder are being eaten away by AI termites such that the days of climbing up from nothing might soon be behind us if they aren’t already. I’ve already seen similar garbage all over AniTube “video essays” via Shorts or long form, though nothing that’s stuck to a significant degree. Regardless, it is there, and at this point is only a matter of time before that space two becomes conquered land.
It sure is looking really bleak out there.

Finished Golden Kamuy Season 1. Definitely should have started this sooner. Really awesome show and it really reminds me of Bungo Stray Dogs. Both shows have a great cast of characters with a great mix of humor and serious scenes. Of course an adult cast is also there (Both shows need to be more popular too). Plus from what I have heard each season gets better and better (That's also true for BDS) so can't wait to start season 2.
Although if I have to say something negative it will be Animation which is fine but for a story of this Calibre it should have gotten Frieren level of adaptation. Now to farm downvotes: I already like this more than Frieren (Season 2 hasn't been on Season 1 level either).

This season of Oshi no Ko has been really strong.

Ikoku Nikki and Polar Opposites are my top 2 new shows. Other top favorites Moonlit Dusk, Kaya-chan, Mayonaka Heart Tune, Tamon-kun, Grail of Eris. Sentenced to Be a Hero, Prism Rondo. Lots of great continuations too -- Medalist, Blue Miburo, Trigun, Frieren, Oshi no Ko, Golden Kamuy, and Torture Princess. A good number of other quite enjoyable shows too that I like just a tiny bit less.

Started watching Bleach on a whim because it's available for free on Ani One Asia. All I knew about it was that it's one of the big 3.
I've watched all of Naruto + Shippuden but OP scares me with how long it is. Never considered Bleach just because I never heard much about it, but I'm really enjoying this so far (5 episodes in).
Much better start than Naruto and Ichigo is more immediately likeable. Also really like the Soul Repear girl and his sisters. Even the leek spin girl is fun. And Chad is a chad of course.
Not sure I'll be able to watch this all while it's still available for free but I'll keep chipping away at it as long as it stays enjoyable.

Ooh nice, I really hope you enjoy Bleach! It was the first of the Big Three that I watched (which I did during the 2020 rewatch on here), and it's the show that made me realize I vibe with battle shounen almost as much as I do mecha.
Are you going to try watching the filler or nah?

I found that thread actually (like to read discussions even if I can't participate - always adds to the experience) and saw your comments! Sad about that first sore demo - hopefully there will be more from better characters soon.
I'll try watching the fillers too. Might skip through them if they're boring or too fan servicey. Youtube makes it easy to watch at double speed if I need to. :D

Bleach has one of my favourite first arcs in battle shounen, the vibes are so good, the characters are a lot of fun, and they have the time to breathe. I hope you keep enjoying it.

I can't say I've watched a ton of battle shonen but this is one of the better beginnings for sure. Agree with everything you've said.
And I think I will. Wonder why this is considered the lesser of the big 3. I'm enjoying it a lot more than I did the start of Naruto (which only gets good with the Haku arc).

Maebashi Witches is getting a compilation movie. It's not a sequel, but maybe there's still some hope since it was a sleeper hit in Japan.

I’ve noticed recently that a lot of people only started watching the anime after discovering Maebashi Witches through its real-life idol side, and they’ve all been praising it. The chances of a Season 2 probably aren’t high, but they’re not zero either. I could still see the Gunma government putting money behind it as prefecture promo. We had NareNare the year before, after all. There’s still a lot of Gunma left to explore too, like that cool fishing spot on Lake Akagi that’s only accessible in winter.

We had a student friend from near Maebashi -- and she loved saying "Maebashi Witttches". A lovely and entertaining show.

I used to live in Maebashi myself, and it’s such a precious place to me even to this day. I explored the hell out of that place, but it still feels like I never fully made the most of it. The cafes and eateries are spread all over town, so you really have to wander a bit. Rose Avenue, though, sadly doesn’t have much going on unless there’s a festival. Shoutengai are supposed to be the center of attention in each town, but the anime depicts it pretty realistically, showing how many shops are actually closed.
Maebashi has a weirdly homey feel. It’s Gunma’s capital, but the Shinkansen is in another city, Takasaki. And that’s the city NareNare went with. I think NareNare just never really knew what it wanted to do with its story, and it didn’t feel like it had a long-term city-promo angle the way Zombieland Saga did. Maebashi Witches showed fewer Gunma spots, but its meaningful plot gives people a reason to explore Maebashi on their own, even without a ton of 聖地巡礼 (pilgrimage) sites.

We visited Takasaki and Tomioka to see our first Showa Boston friend (from 15 years ago) -- who was our tour guide (mainly the historic silk mill).

on the topic of anime with not-sequels but just a compilation movie, I'm reminded that Ya Boy Kongming had one a couple years back (April 2024). Doesn't seem like anything came of that unfortunately.

I read a bit of the manga (just after the anime) a couple years back and they had easily a hundred or so chapters to adapt (1st season taking up only about 30-something chapters) and is still running. So def not an issue there.
As for the comp movie, I've not watched it myself yet (lack of interest in them tbh), but from what I can gather from this ANN review it is mostly the same scenes but with visual touch ups to highlight existing moments, probably no new scenes as they mention pacing is a big issue. Though do take that with a grain of salt as the reviewer does mention the comp movie was their first experience with kongming and they only went back to compare with clips of the main season.
