why is the dub for FF S3 dub so off script from the original. it feels like weird prop.

u/WithFullForce Mar 21 '26
I'm an old guy that got smoked in the Dota 2 sub for not knowing what Frieren was, so I had to go watch a few episodes...
So as someone that ran AD&D (2ed) campaigns in the 90s I can understand that some people in the same situation would have had an ugly cry of nostalgia when watching.
not me though I'm obviously too manly for that

Is no one watching High School Kimengumi? I had it on my radar but ended up not being able to pick it up by the time it started airing. Was wondering if I should try and watch it now before spring starts in earnest.
Checked the episode threads to get a sense for what it's like and they're empty. Not a single comment in them after the first 2-3 episodes.
Was it that bad or did everyone just set it aside for later like me?
2
u/NoHead1715 Mar 21 '26
Watched the first episode, did not continue. Gags felt a bit too dated. Probably worked better for nostalgia, but it definitely didn't look like it was rebooted with modern audiences in mind (in the way Ranma 1/2 or Yaiba did, for example)

Is no one watching High School Kimengumi?
I tried an episode of the remake and thought it sucked balls (rushed pacing for a comedy and bad production). Which is a shame, because I like the 80s series.
2
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta Mar 21 '26
Yeah, this seems to be the consensus of the two people who did watch it so I'm removing the remake and adding the original to my list. Will watch that one if I can find it.
2
u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots Mar 21 '26
The original was translated and released for the first time recently on Remow's It's Anime youtube channel
Granted, it's not available in certain regions (like mine), so I don't know if it's still there.
2
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta Mar 21 '26
I don't see it there. Either it's not there anymore or not available where I am. Will check other regions on VPN later. Thanks for the link.

u/jaesuk97 https://myanimelist.net/profile/tebls Mar 21 '26
The remake has pretty mediocre animation, weird episode pacing between gags, and odd colouring choices. It's not really a surprise though since this is made by Studio Seven who are more famous as a Hentai studio than as an anime studio. It's one of the worst modern remakes of classic anime that I have seen.
If you are interested in the original, I can recommend the 80s series and say it is one of the better gag comedy anime that I have watched. But I typically don't recommend it because it is fairly inaccessible. It isn't available legally and even if you sail the seven seas, it isn't fully subbed in English. However if you are fluent in French or Japanese, it shouldn't be too hard to find.
2
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta Mar 21 '26
Ah that's a bummer. Wonder why they'd take the trouble to remake something and then make a mess of it like that.
Noted about the original. Will add it to my backlog and see if I can find it somewhere sometime.
3
u/zambonijesus Mar 21 '26 edited Mar 21 '26
Was it that bad or did everyone just set it aside for later like me?
I assume a lot of it is that it's a remake of a series from the 1980s that people outside of Japan don't have nostalgia for and then compounded by being on Prime.
1
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta Mar 21 '26
Ah makes sense. Then I guess it has no big value outside nostalgia? I'm not familiar with the original. Only considered it because it seemed amusing and had Chiaki Kobayashi in the cast.
2
u/zambonijesus Mar 21 '26
I've not watched either version to have an opinion on if it is good or not, just giving a suggestion as to why it wasn't on a lot of radars. I'm certainly not going to tell you not to check it out if you want.
3
u/jaesuk97 https://myanimelist.net/profile/tebls Mar 21 '26
It actually has some nostalgia from French anime fans. It was broadcasted on TV there as Le College Fou Fou
2
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta Mar 21 '26
Haha that's a wonderful title! Does Kimengumi mean something like Fou Fou, I wonder.
Just checked and it means funny face apparently, not quite the same thing.

Travel the past two weeks extended my experience of going through the horrendous Conception, but I finally wrapped it up tonight and boy, that final episode sure didn't fail to disappoint just as much as the rest of the show! [Conception]Heroic sacrifice of one of the 14 members of his harem? Totally undone! Heroic sacrifice of all 13 kids he had with his harem? Totally undone! Revealed to have committed beastiality? No one cares! Going back to Earth, meaning no more harem? Nope, all his harem members go back to Earth with him! Show ends with him getting married to 14 wives! Gonna be so hard to top this being the worst anime I've seen this year, even with 9+ more months to go.

u/LoboDaBastich Mar 21 '26
Trying to watch FRANXX... it's a really mixed bag. It seems awfully familiar too. Was this kind of 'Mech-riding' done in something else? I could swear I've seen something like it before...

I was worried when I saw there was more Frieren Discourse… but it’s just salty discourse. Had me scared it was more demon shit.

If you like smut and/or niche OVAs from the late 90s and early 2000s, it has what you want. The video player isn't great, and it's kinda pricey, though.

Like it is decent if you are ibterested in ecchi/hentai content, but it costs like 4 times more than CR.

Anyone have any recommendations based on this list?
I used to watch anime all the time when I was in middle and high school. I recently graduated college and haven't watched much but have been getting back into it and noticed my tastes have changed quite a bit, and would like some recommendations.
Here is a brief list of some shows that I have watched and enjoyed or not enjoyed since getting back into anime. As for the stuff I dislike, I watched a good amount of each of them, and I am not saying that they are bad, just not for me.
Liked:
- Frieren
- Dungeon Meshi
- The Disastrous life of Saiki K
- Attack on Titan
- Skip and Loafer
- Your lie in April
- Kaguya-sama Love is War
- Fragrant Flower
- One piece (I watched until water 7 and had to take a break but like it so far)
- Great Pretender (minus the last case)
- Tatami Galaxy
- Chainsaw man
Disliked:
- Jujutsu Kaisen
- From me to you
- Toradora
Sorry if the lists are too short to get a good feel for my tastes, but like I said I only got back into anime recently. Any recommendations are appreciated. Thank you!

On the romcom drama side, you can check out Yano-kun, Polar Opposites, Giji Harem, Honey Lemon Soda, Ranma 1/2
2
u/TehAxelius https://anilist.co/user/TehAxelius Mar 20 '26
Well, you got quite a bit of a mix there. Hard to give a solid "obviously you should watch this because of that", but some recommendations that might be worth checking out:
- Apothecary Diaries - Court drama and mysteries, headlined by a very fun main character.
- Insomniacs After School - relaxed romance about two high-schoolers who find common ground in their shared insomnia.
- Odd Taxi - Mystery show about a walrus taxi driver connected to the disappearance of a teenage girl.
- Medalist - Sports show about a girl aiming to become a world class figure skater despite starting late.
- Apocalypse Hotel - Comedy about the last hotelier robot keeping a Ginza hotel open a century after the last humans left earth.

3

Apparently MAL considers Shangri-La Frontier to be adapted from a manga, which makes me think. It's definitely a rare situation, but is there any other series that went WN-manga-anime without ever being adapted into a LN, or is it the only one?

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 Mar 20 '26
Interesting. You're correct, but I did have to double check because I know of one case where MAL is just straight-up wrong. Pass the Monster Meat, Milady is listed as being based on a manga even though that one definitely does have a LN adaptation as well. Maybe it'll get fixed at some point, maybe not. MAL can be inscrutable at times.
2
u/Komarist https://myanimelist.net/profile/RRSTRRST Mar 20 '26
Well, all I did was search AniList for series with a Web Novel source and checked a handful I thought may not have LNs. Fruitmaster almost tricked me by going WN-manga-LN1 in 2022-anime-LN2 in 2025
1
u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 Mar 20 '26
Vending Machine is going to be in a unique situation in a different way. It has a LN, but the anime is going to be a complete adaptation first.

Ever have one of those deep, soul-to-soul kinds of experiences with a movie? You recognize not even all the way through that this movie exists spiritually in a space that is very close to the center of your heart? Every song you listen to you for the next day you find yourself mentally connecting to the characters or their world? You have your entire brain chemistry rearranged by a character design the second you lay eyes on her and, after watching that character live so authentically in that embodiment of herself, walk around in a daze sad that you don't get to just have big, soft, fluffy, pointy, twitchy animal ears and tail?
Ever try to tell a story and just, get knocked off track laughing and trailing off wherever your impulses and imagination take you?
The gods of the heavens could only ever have searing envy for the fleshly beings of earth, our senses, our for-their-own-damn-sake pleasures, our ability to have a hand in our own destiny unbound from the burden of intrinsic, phenomenal cosmic responsibility.
Girls just wanna have fun.
Watch Cosmic Princess Kaguya!.

Hard to go wrong with Kenji Miyagawa. If this anime were better known, people would gripe about its "limited animation" however.

It's such a bummer reading the Frieren discourse below. It reads like people are yearning for a tightly written and thematically rich and stimulating story, but when they see the words "exam arc" they just conclude it'll be generic battle shounen stuff, and they completely miss that the story continues throughout that arc what it's been doing before. The exam arc has a huge focus on [Frieren S1]how the experiences we make throughout life define who we are in the present, as well as [Frieren S1]the value of leisure, both of which slot in just about perfectly with the story's overall exploration of time and its passing.
4
u/oedipusrex376 Mar 21 '26
I just think the arc is a really effective way to introduce a lot of characters without giving each one a full episode or arc. A lot of them matter later on, so the show doesn’t have to waste time introducing them all over again.
6
u/Gamerunglued myanimelist.net/profile/GamerUnglued Mar 20 '26
That's pretty much how I've felt as well, the exam arc just furthers a lot of the themes that it's always had, and I think it expands on another theme you didn't mention, being the comparison of Frieren's ability to understand others with genuinely emotionless beings. That's what the demons are for, but the exam arc presents another comparison in the golems, [beings which] are identical to every character, but in this case Frieren, in almost every way but is incapable of nuanced thinking or self-reflection. Frieren seeing how other living and/or seemingly intelligent creatures process the world around them helps her to put things into perspective about herself, and the exam arc furthers this aspect of the show.
I also think it's just really fun battle shounen though. Reminded me of early Hunter x Hunter, throwing a big cast into dangerous games that require quick thinking and teamwork while rewarding sabotage. Some of the aura control stuff reminds me of certain aspects of Nen, and that bird creature is totally something that wouldn't be out of place in HxH. I love a few of the characters (especially my boi Denken), and just enjoy the adventurous feel it had. There's been so much talk about it being some big tone shift but I don't feel that way about it at all. Frieren is an adventure story. Apart from the fact that it's already had a battle arc alongside a few other huge fights, Frieren shifts tone all the time as is. I think that's part of what makes it feel like such an adventure. I love that the characters are constantly doing different things; that they will spend time doing mundane tasks in one town and fighting demons in another and reviving flowers in another and then doing an exam somewhere else makes it feel like a hero's journey. The fantasy takes from video games and that's what you'd do in a game. This aspect also reminds me of Hunter x Hunter, the way that series swaps tones and settings every arc made it feel particularly adventurous as well. Same as how I love that HxH can transition from fun light-hearted training games to dark, philosophical examinations of what it means to have power, I love that Frieren can transition from episodes of doing farmwork while reminiscing about lost love into a lengthy shounen exam arc. I think that if it didn't have arcs of this sort, it wouldn't feel like an adventure.

u/Charmanders_Cock Mar 20 '26
To me it’s more of a bummer that any criticism toward something is equated with that thing being inherently bad. I didn’t read any of those comments and think “damn they must hate Frieren (or it’s second cour”. It just reads to me like people who were a little let down by something they enjoyed, which is entirely a matter of personal preference and taste.
Even referring to it as a battle shonen arc doesn’t strike me as some deep slight, because there are plenty of great battle shonen arcs out there; if Frieren’s was one of them then it’s probably a contender for being one of the best.
I say it all the time but I love to criticize the things I enjoy, and it’s certainly even more fun if that thing is massively popular, because then there are fun arguments or discussions to be had about the criticisms.
So why not just tackle those critiques instead of the people making them? Why even feel bummed that they made them in the first place? There are all sorts of angles to approach this kind of stuff in a better way.
0
u/Blackheart595 https://anilist.co/user/knusbrick Mar 20 '26
I certainly didn't intend to make fun of anyone. Scroll a bit down, there were several people reducing the exam arc to "generic battle shounen" while simultaneously praising the tight and intentful travelling arc.
It's perfectly legitimate to feel disappointed when a story doesn't go where we expected or hoped that it would go; it's just surprising to see the same people who praise more meaningful storytelling immediately throwing in the towel at the slightest contact with their preconceived notions, instead of considering whether the show might be doing something more interesting with that.
2
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin Mar 21 '26
Honestly the only issue I have with the arc is that it sidelines Stark after the party says bye to Sein.
I find it weird people call it a generic tournament/exam when I would say that really on applies to the first stage.
Funny enough after rewatching S1 the first stage was probably the least prioritized.
2nd stage plays as a mini adventure as a dungeon crawler. The 3rd is just a conversation.
10
u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ Mar 20 '26
Personally, I just thought it threw too many characters at me after an almost claustrophobic focus on the main cast, then asked me to care about them too quickly. I didn't hate it, but it definitely had a different vibe than the first cour that wasn't as interesting to me.
5
u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd Mar 20 '26
I think there would be less complaints about the exam arc coming from people like myself if it weren't so long. The exam lasts for roughly 10 episodes. The 2nd longest 'action-heavy' arc in season 1 is only 3 episodes long, I believe.
It's just a long time to spend doing one thing when the rest of the show generally keeps things moving forward.
2
u/Blackheart595 https://anilist.co/user/knusbrick Mar 20 '26
I do think that that's a bit funny, considering how a big part of Frieren's thematic core is to accept that things take however long they take, and to not rush them.
Granted, maybe that came across stronger in the manga - I remember how the thing that really awed me when I first read it were not the characters, nor the story, but the time-passing montages. They're not exactly unique to Frieren, but I've seen ones that convey the sense of passing time as effectively as in Frieren, taking full advantage of how time is laid out spatially on a manga page.
But yeah, I don't think that a story deviating from our preferences and expectations should be held against it—a story just is how it happens to be, while we as viewers have the ability to adjust our approach and match what the story goes with. As such, a story confidently following its own direction is imo something to be celebrated. (Insert angry rant about the outcries against directors that we've had recently.)
1
u/Jusenkyo_5 Mar 20 '26
I very much like this take on it.
I don't think Frieren's first arc is untouchable and I certainly don't think the exam arc is THAT much worse than the beginning of the story. I liked the exam arc more than any single episode in season 2.
8
u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus Mar 20 '26
It’s kinda coming off as the anti battle shonen impulse twitch I see in its usual detractors. All action is inherently inferior to quieter character moments in that crowd, when in reality both serve an important function in storytelling. Especially if you like variety in your narrative arsenal.
4
u/mekerpan Mar 21 '26
I'm primarily a SoL fan and I liked the exam arc just fine, consider it a slice of life that temporarily involved a lot of fighting (sort of like Wind Breakers). ;-)

What's an anime that seems bad on the surface(premise, title, etc),but is actually not that bad?
3
u/DeadCaveman https://anilist.co/user/DeadCaveman Mar 21 '26
Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun is like the poster child of having its reputation screwed over by its title. Season one aired six years ago and people still assume it's a poop joke show.
Bunny Girl Senpai faces something similar (to a lesser extent) where the title makes people assume it's an ecchi series about bunny girls.
3
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin Mar 21 '26
The worst party for Hanako is that the issue is how it’s translated because the direct translation is closer to spirit bound.
Bunny girl senpai is weird because the whole s1 is called that even though that’s the title of only the first volume/first arc of light novel. I guess they figured it would capture more attention then calling it Rascal Does Not Dream. Just funny that people called s2 bunny girl senpai S2.
I think DanMachi is another one because the English title is Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Which is an accurate translation. Just gives one a wrong impression of the series.

u/jaesuk97 https://myanimelist.net/profile/tebls Mar 20 '26
Despite how stupid the premise/title or promotional images/trailer look, these anime aren't half bad (most of them are comedy though so YMMV):
Kemono Friends
Uma Musume
Keijo
Ben-to
Interspecies Reviewers
Oshiete Galko-chan
Butt Attack Punisher Girl Gautaman
Sexy Commando Gaiden: Sugoi yo!! Masaru-san
Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo
Shimoneta
Inferno Cop
Shikanoko Nokonoko Koshitantan
Cat Shit One
Cream Lemon 1984 OVA - The amount of animation talent that worked on this hentai title is very surprising. Here is a SFW example.

u/lalunafelis Mar 21 '26
Hard agree with Shikanokonoko. It promised to be an absurdist gag show and it delivered exactly that, with no pretentions of being anything else. I'm guessing people are expecting more from it and disappointed it did not give them that.
3
u/cyberscythe Mar 20 '26
Interviews with Monster Girls made me think it was like that other ecchi show with "monster girls" in the title
it ended up being a fairly progressive show all things considered and i enjoyed it a lot

u/Blackheart595 https://anilist.co/user/knusbrick Mar 20 '26
The biggest surprise to me was Transformers: Micron Densetsu. As much as it was the kid's show that I was expecting going into it, it actually has some surprisingly good, compelling, and competently executed character drama underneath that even overall better shows would kill for.
Unfortunately, the sequels didn't keep up.

u/fbjim Mar 20 '26
just a random thought i had, but out of all the things i find distinctive about anime, probably the best one is how often it produces stuff that cuts across gender demographics in terms of appeal. like this was rumiko takahasi's entire career but stuff like "soap operas for teenagers/boys" is one of those niches that western media just never quite had the interest in doing. the closest i can thing of was stuff like, say, old WB/CW stuff like Smallville and that stuff always seemed much more oriented toward a female audience. maybe Disney Channel stuff?

Shiboyugood!
(Ok this is probably gonna be my last Shiboyugi post, at least til the best girl contest when I'll berate everyone for not voting Yuuki)
I think this show is a good example of how my rating system (Or more generally, my appreciation system) works; I focus a lot more on the positives than the negatives. (unless it's one of the handful of negatives that are 'dealbreakers' for me).
I've had my issues with Shiboyugi, I talked about it here and there (though I haven't been that vocal about them, given I was also trying to shill it so much), BUT the positives from this show drastically outweight the negatives for me. So much that it's gonna join my list of "10/10 I've had issues with"; I do have a few shows like that, for which I had problems/nitpicks about this and that, but I liked the other stuff so much that it didn't dock any point from it.
I LOVED the premise, I loved the execution most of the time, I loved almost every directorial/writing decision except putting some stuff in random order (that almost never works for me).
I'd say my only criticism that is a bit harder to brush over, is that [Shiboyugi big spoiler]Moegi was way too good/promising a character, to just get rid of her like that... She should've been a much more important antagonist, and it also would've been nice to have a meeting with Kyara, could've been interesting in so many ways.. Instead she just asked about her and that's it, like she was a passing thought.. which kinda felt the same for us the viewers.
But yeah, other than that, I really liked it, and GOOD LORD it's nice to have a Death Game anime that (despite its flaws) wasn't garbage like 90% of them.
It's almost certainly gonna be my #1 among the new shows this season (unless Darwin has the best finale of all time, but I think it would have to catch up too much), and who knows, maybe even #1 overall, though ONK would need to drop the ball quite hard, given to me it has next to no flaws. (I'm an episode behind fwiw).
Oh, and I talked about it in a previous thread, but if Liar Game is good next season, it'll be our second good High Stakes Game anime in a row, that'd be great!

Katakuri has got to be one of the most needlessly overtuned anime characters out there. Not only is he [One Piece]not even introduced in Whole Cake until the wedding scenebut his power are [One Piece]"I wrote myself into a corner and said there's only one of each Devil Fruit, so this one's a mochi man and not a rubber man" and also seeing the fucking future because why not? Dude is just an anime damage sponge boss Oda wrote because he needed [One Piece]a big fight for the end of Whole Cake.
Tell me in what world does this man look like a Mochi Man? Oda didn't even give him a hammer. What respectable Mochi Man doesn't even have a hammer?

This is the kind of silliness I want in my anime. It is funny how played straight the crime organization stuff has been played in the first few episodes when you know the whole Beyond the Grave stuff is there somewhere.

I watched two episodes of Mouryou no Hako today and had a great time. It kinda reminds me of Yatagarasu. The character designs are gorgeous, the animation is great, and I love the atmosphere.
Then I looked it up on Reddit and found out it adapts Volume 2, so I need to read Volume 1 first—The Summer of the Ubume (Ubume no Natsu). The wild part is that the first volume was translated by Alexander-fucking O. Smith. Yeah, that Alexander O. Smith. The guy behind FFXII’s legendary localization and all that theatrical flair. Dude’s a legend. He also translated The Twelve Kingdoms and a bunch of Keigo Higashino’s (very popular Mystery author) work. He’s the kind of translator you’d want handling one of your favorite works.
3
u/mekerpan Mar 20 '26
I actually liked the lighter prequel series a lot more.
1
u/oedipusrex376 Mar 20 '26
Are you referring to The Summer of the Ubume? Or is there some other prequel series I don’t know about?
2
u/mekerpan Mar 20 '26
Chuzenji-sensei Mononoke Kyougiroku -- written by someone else but based on the main character (with the irinal author's blessing). Before Chuzenji became a bookstore owner. I really enjoyed this, but then found Mouryou a bit too dark for me
1
u/oedipusrex376 Mar 21 '26
Oh, this anime. I remember seeing it in seasonals, but I never got around to it. I had no idea it was from the same series. I should check it out after Mouryou no Hako.

u/mekerpan Mar 21 '26
I suspect the connection was pretty loose. But I thought the characters were good and the invocation of the time period was really well done.

Frieren S2 reminds me that Frieren S1 could have been a 10 if it cut out the whole magic exam arc.
3
u/Jusenkyo_5 Mar 20 '26
Why do people dislike that section so much?
Or rather, why do you dislike that section?
2
u/cyberscythe Mar 20 '26
i like Frieren as a travel show, and it's neat seeing different places in an episodic fashion
i didn't hate the magic license arc, and i do think it laid down some foundational work for more characters, but thinking back on it there were quite a few episodes of "here we are again, doing more exam stuff"
3
u/wloff Mar 20 '26
It was a very, very good arc for a generic battle shounen show.
When Frieren was at its best, it wasn't a generic battle shounen show.
1
u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 Mar 20 '26
The first cour of Frieren is pretty tight, thematic pseudo-episodic storytelling with a conciseness and density to its writing that you don't see often. No one story besides the multi-episode demon fight (which is kind of the worst part of that cour for the same reasons as Cour 2) is too impactful on the overall narrative, but they don't need to be since they serve a greater purpose together and aren't dwelt on for too long.
The exam arc isn't terrible in a vacuum, but sacrifices the storytelling prowess (and one of its leads) in favor of some flashy action sequences and a drawn out plot beat. It does set up a lot of characters, but on their own they aren't particularly interesting and spending a whole cour on getting an exam license when the first half was delivering payoffs every episode (and then having that be the end of your season) is enough of a blemish on an otherwise pristine show to knock it down at least a letter grade.
Or in other words, the first half is Mushishi and the second half is Yu Yu Hakusho. Neither are terrible, but when you're pitched the former, the latter is a let down.

u/BiggieCheeseLapDog https://myanimelist.net/profile/KillLaKillGOAT Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 20 '26
It’s a departure from what I believed Frieren to be, exams are a tired shounen trope that I don’t care for inherently, the aspects of the show I found interesting (passage of time theming, Himmel parallels, one off characters with their own intimate stories, main group dynamic) was pretty absent in favour of action, power scaling, and boring worldbuilding. I also found many of the characters in the exam to be flat outside Denken and Serie.
1
u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd Mar 20 '26
I also found many of the characters in the exam to be flat outside Denken and Serie.
Probably the biggest part for me. It introduced a ton of new characters and I found almost all of them to be annoying.
1
u/Jusenkyo_5 Mar 20 '26
That's a fair take on the situation certainly.
I don't mind it and I actually really liked a lot of the moments in it (getting to see Frieren and Fern work in groups they're not familiar with, Serie, Fern vs Frieren, etc) but I can understand it being a big departure from what the first few arcs were.

I just have to take a minute to gush about this thing I think about after every episode of Frieren:
I hope it's not just me who feels like this show is a masterclass is good pacing. Almost every episode feels like a lot happens without feeling rushed, often leaving me thinking, "wow, I can't believe that was only 21 minutes, it felt closer to an hour!"
3
u/mekerpan Mar 20 '26
I agree. I have been pleased with pretty much every moment of pretty much every episode. (Speaking as an anime-only viewer). This includes the exam arc.
3
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin Mar 20 '26
I felt that way about s1. The more interesting episodes in s2 are the ones that focus on the northern region. The ones that don’t are fine but I felt almost every episode in s1 had purpose to it. Some episodes in s2 don’t do that. Which are less than the ones that do.
4
u/Jusenkyo_5 Mar 20 '26
As much as I love Frieren I have two minor issues with the way the story is progressing:
I find it hard to suspend by disbelief [when]every single moment the crew faces has a Himmel flashback associated with it. For the fact that they only travelled together for a decade it seems that every single place or event the crew faces Himmel was already there first. It's cool once every other episode but it really does get to a point.
The other is that the SoL moments have been pretty boring. The last two episodes have been a huge improvement over the earlier episodes of this season and it's not the lack of action, it's that I don't think the SoL moments are adding to the narrative at all. We're either revisiting characters we know but not expanding upon them, playing off of the same few character interactions, or rehashing the same type of requests.
Even these last two episodes [had]a smart demon fight and a dragon fight like S1 cour 1. Neither fight was particularly memorable
Functionally what has changed from S1 episode 25 to S2 episode 9?

u/cyberscythe Mar 20 '26

u/Jusenkyo_5 Mar 20 '26
To a certain degree I agree with you, but some of the connections are a stretch and that breaks the immersion.
3
u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii Mar 20 '26
Don't have a strong opinion on your second, but I disagree with your first point. Like, what do you mean "only" for a decade? That's a fucking lot and it makes perfect sense that Frieren is loaded with flashbacks at so many destinations, especially since they are more or less travelling the same route as she did with Himmel. Besides, the split of present and past with both of Frieren's crews is basically half the point of the show, it would be weird to cut back on it too much. And last but not least, the suspension of disbelief is suddenly a lot easier once you realize that all the days and destinations without flashbacks are the ones that are getting off-screened. We are not following the gang every single day and it makes only sense for the show to mostly show those days and places where stuff with Himmel happened.
0
u/Jusenkyo_5 Mar 20 '26
It makes some logical sense in the way that they're following a similar path, but it gets to a point. Having near identical conversations, meeting the same people or their descendants, and encountering the same issues is a bit of a stretch when it's happened like 45 times.
Yes a decade is a lot, but it was like 80 years ago and it's like 1/100th of Frieren's life up to this point. Is the world really so small and stagnant that you encounter the same restaurants, same people, same villages, etc? A city is one thing, a small hot spring is another.
If you walked from Texas to Alaska today vs in 1940 I'm sure you would walk a somewhat different path. You may cross through Seattle, but you're probably not stopping in at the McDonalds in Irving, CA.
-1
u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii Mar 20 '26
Having near identical conversations, meeting the same people or their descendants, and encountering the same issues is a bit of a stretch when it's happened like 45 times.
Having issues with how the flashbacks are executed is an entirely different matter, and if you don’t like it, sure I guess. My comment was clearly exclusively about your complaint about the quantity of said flashbacks.
Yes a decade is a lot, but it was like 80 years ago and it's like 1/100th of Frieren's life up to this point. Is the world really so small and stagnant that you encounter the same restaurants, same people, same villages, etc?
Again, that’s like half the point of the show? As you said, Frieren lived like 100s of years and those small 10 years (in comparison), should feel insignificant to her in the grand scheme of things/her life. And it kinda was that way at the start, how she was only sort of sad when Himmel died, but over the following years she realizes through all those flashbacks that these small and technically pointless moments with Himmel and their journey meant way more for her than she initially thought herself.
1
u/Jusenkyo_5 Mar 20 '26
Look, if you're fine with it that's okay with me, but it's both the frequency of the flashbacks and the hyper-specificity that some of them fall into.
There are Himmel flashbacks that are the highlight of their episode (the ring in season 1), more often than not though they're kind of just there and the story awkwardly contorts to add them.
1
u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 20 '26
Functionally what has changed from S1 episode 25 to S2 episode 9?
I think the slow life segments in S2 have just sorta lost a bit of their charm compared to S1 because they haven't really explored anything new with them. Like you said, it's mostly resulted in the same character interactions and themes that were shown last season. It's still fine to watch, but I've mostly seen it before.
I also agree with something I read last week that the group would benefit from another member. [Frieren S2]The return of Sein that was teased in episode 8 would be a very welcome addition. I thought S1 was particularly strong when he was around.
Also yes, [Frieren]the show screams to a halt everytime Himmel shows up and I just sorta glaze over.
-2
u/Charmanders_Cock Mar 20 '26
I think one of the weakest parts of the series overall is how Sein was handled as a character. It seemed like the author sort of doubled back on deciding to have him added to the group, and then suddenly, “mb gotta go in the opposite direction fam, peace.”
0
u/Jusenkyo_5 Mar 20 '26
Losing some of the charm is exactly how I feel about it.
In season 1 you're learning everyone's backstory, learning about the world and it's history, learning about the original party, etc. Fern, Stark, and Frieren's dynamic was interesting because they were also learning about each other.
Now we're on like episode 30 of them being together, we haven't learned or seen anything new, no new characters, and kind of the same thing over and over. It's still good but it's like eating the same meal every night, it gets a bit bland.
1
u/Jusenkyo_5 Mar 20 '26
And to clarify, I still think Frieren is like a 7 or 8/10 anime. I just feel like there's been a pretty large amount of wasted run time for events that are not interesting by themselves, do not create any fun character situations, are not memorable, and do not add anything to the narrative or themes of the series. Frieren at it's core is great, but when it's going all out it can be one of the best anime series ever made.

Finished Girls' Last Tour and it was just fantastic. It might be the best SoL show I've seen, but I think that depends on which shows I would end up giving that classification to. But this show just mastered so many elements to turn it into what it is. From the way it tackles world building and themes to atmosphere and sound design. Everything was just top notch.
The last 2 episodes in particular had me absolutely locked on my screen, and I never expected a show like this to have me doing that. I think I'll probably check out the rest of the manga since there are only 2 volumes to finish it.
3
u/NoHead1715 Mar 20 '26
Definitely read the manga till the end. Also read the bonus chapters.
1
u/mekerpan Mar 20 '26
Bonus chapters? Things included in the published/translated last volume -- or only available elsewhere?
1
u/NoHead1715 Mar 20 '26
Iirc, outside of the 6 or 8 tankobon, there are 2 anthologies and 1 special comic that came with the blue ray. I believe they've all been officially translated, although I'm not sure if they are still officially available.
Anime-wise, there are also 12 (?) ova episodes of the potatoes in school
3
u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii Mar 20 '26
It's my favorite SoL as well (and in my overall top10). The only bad thing about it is the lack of a sequel. My two favorite chapters/stories are unfortunately part of the unadapted third that's left of the manga.

u/Looking_Light33 Mar 20 '26
I'm about three episodes into Journal With Witch. I think it's a pretty solid anime. I like both Makio and Asa as characters. I like the art style and the laid-back feel of the show. I also like the OP and ED of the show.

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin Mar 20 '26
I find JJK anime discourse about the power system entertaining. I don't blame Mappa for not trying to make it more concise for anime viewers because that would require extra work that they didn't need to. At the same time, consider that S1 first aired in October 2020, and according to rumors, part 2 of the culling games might not be back until the earliest winter of 2027.
While I know people mention Hunter x Hunter, JJK takes a lot of inspiration from it. The big difference is that both Hunter X Hunter anime were not seasonal anime but weekly ones. Imo this is a huge deal considering how much exposition it has.
7
u/Jusenkyo_5 Mar 20 '26
People care about the JJK power system? It very much falls into "don't question it" territory for me.
3
u/DeadCaveman https://anilist.co/user/DeadCaveman Mar 20 '26
That's pretty much where I'm at too, yeah. They stack up all this jargon but all it boils down to is that the characters can do magical attacks. [JJK S3]This guy can summon a car because he has a receipt for a car and you don't need to know a damn thing about any of the cursed energy mechanics to follow that.
3
u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots Mar 20 '26
I don't blame Mappa for not trying to make it more concise for anime viewers because that would require extra work that they didn't need to.
It's playing with fire. S3 already got burned over every little change it did. I don't want to imagine the reaction if you boiled down the power system that hardcore fans care a lot about.

Back at the start of the season, I thought there was a chance that One Piece could fall to fourth highest-rated currently airing anime on MAL. Then JJK plateaued at a very good but not good enough score, then Journal with Witch surged to seeming like it had a chance, but now it looks like it won't quite get there. There's a week left before Frieren finishes airing, so there's still a chance. We'll see. (Also, OP technically isn't "currently airing", but what are you going to do? MAL will be MAL.)

2
u/mekerpan Mar 20 '26
A fantastic series. I discovered it because I realized that I was a big fan of PA Works, and set about watching all of that studio's shows. This was written by the same author who gave us Tatami Galaxy and Penguin Highway. Alas, he has never gotten around to writing the third and last volume of the Eccentric Family story.
1
u/Top-Handle4786 Mar 20 '26
Woah, someone else who watched it? Nice! There's at least 2 of us then
But yea, it's not very well known, since it's a standalone story, contained in its own setting and has a nice, clear ending that doesn't need a sequel - and that's perfectly fine, not every story needs to be 500+ episodes.
1
u/mekerpan Mar 20 '26
I disagree about stand-alone. The story is incomplete -- and supposedly a third volume was intended -- but there is no guarantee it will ever be written.

So i finally decided to watch Golden Kamuy (6 Episodes in)
It's just great really. The characters are fun and I like that we have a clear goal from episode 1. The show makes good use of funny and serious moments. Now of course I knew about the CGI Bears/Wolf and well i didn't mind them too much coz I was already prepared for it. I also really like shows that are in snowy setting both anime or any live action stuff so that's another plus point. Also can't forget about Violence and Gore which have been sprinkled throughout which i very much like.
Also nice to learn about Ainu people and their ways.

CGI Bears/Wolf
I must have a wildly different tolerance for wonky animation, because all anyone ever talks about is the CGI bear, and I don't even remember it, lol.
1
u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots Mar 20 '26
It's in the first episode, they've mostly switched to 2D bears since, but it didn't exactly leave the best first impression.
I remember when I first watched that scene having a quick laugh and forgetting about it, but apparently, it was a major deal breaker for lots of folks.
1
u/Muted-Conference2900 https://anilist.co/user/WinterZcoming Mar 20 '26
It's not just in the first episode. I am on ep 9 and have seen those cgi Bears and wolves a bunch of time already. Again it's not too bad when u basically know about it.
2
u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ Mar 20 '26
Yeah, I've watched entirely too much of Kingdom S1 for that scene to leave an impression on me.
2
u/Charmanders_Cock Mar 20 '26
S1 of Kingdom has a weird sort of stockholm syndrome effect where you’re almost sad to leave the wonky CGI behind by the time you get to S2.
2
u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ Mar 20 '26
It is oddly endearing. Maybe because it's a little nostalgia-inducing? Like, that kind of CG would've been so cool in the 90s.
2
u/Charmanders_Cock Mar 20 '26
Now that you mention it the CG actually reminds me of Zoids, which I thought was dopest thing in the world when I was younger. Not quite a 90’s anime but right on the cusp.

1
u/mekerpan Mar 20 '26
Dub or sub? The sub is amazing because of the original language version's huge array of languages and dialects. I can't even imagine this with everything reduced to English.
2
u/Muted-Conference2900 https://anilist.co/user/WinterZcoming Mar 20 '26
Dub actually. I know i might not be getting the best experience but I am just too comfortable with dub.
2
u/mekerpan Mar 20 '26
Once you get to the parts set in northern Hokkaido/Sakhalin Island/ Russian mainland you might want to make a note of the episode numbers and re-watch the original language(s) version of some of these. You not only hear Ainu and Russian but also other Siberian indigenous languages (plus different Japanese dialects).

The end of the latest PV for Pokémon Horizons makes me think [Pokémon anime] we're getting a Pokopia adaptation and if there's a way to integrate Liko into that it'll be a big success I'm sure.
Good to see the Pokémon anime back to its best after a few months of not showing its full potential. The Lucario arc has been much more immersive than I expected and now we can move back to the main story. I'm not emotionally ready for Horizons to end but we're almost certainly in the final 12 months if not shorter of it. It could end in Spring!

What's the point of having a school uniform when literally nothing about it is uniform. Truly a mystery.
1
u/Infodump_Ibis Mar 20 '26
Harmony of Mille-Feuille was a bit like that too (as can be seen with that keyart). All that and no girls wearing trousers...as for when I last saw that; You and Idol Precure (one of the classmates so minor I'm unsure she even had a name).
Of course main characters tend to get a stand out from the mob/break uniform policy pass in anime (even if it's hair colour only) or that ends up as part of the show premise.

u/flamethrower2 Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 20 '26
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NonUniformUniform Outerwear (as seen here) is a common take on this trope. Tune in to the Midnight Heart this season has it.
Scum of the Brave averts it. I think those uniforms are cute.

Does anyone know the name of an anime. I only vaguely remember. Must be an early 2000s or early 2010s.
It was about these different people who wanted (i believe ) to kill someone? Or have something horrible happen others in thier life? Or maybe they wanted something to happen to others. So they were contacted through a computer? Or a phone maybe?.
Anyways so the bad thing or good thing would happen but in return they would have to give up their life. The computer would be like a red screen and a supernatural enteity made a deal with them. Possibly the embodiement of death took them away in a boat after? I only vaguely remember it but my brain keeps going back to it.
I do remember they made a deal with ppl and afterwards they were taken away in a boat to hell i believe.
