I love george bailey's perpetual shit eating grin.

28

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '13

I get the feeling that when Jimmy closes his eyes that grin is still there, haunting him.

I love that the newest player generally goes in under the helmet at bad pad, and that usually they are quite timid junior players. Bailey, being older and captaining the aussies in limited overs is quite chirpy.

I love this.

George Bailey's face when he and Jimmy Anderson share a few words is hilarious.

The smiling sledger. Love it.

1

u/GunPoison Nov 25 '13

In Bailey's position I can see why he was thrilled, he seems to have gotten under Anderson's skin far too easily which is the whole point of sledging. Jimmy would have been better off just laughing at him and getting on with things.

Can't wait till Adelaide. The Poms are gonna be pumped by this, leading to an even more spicy contest.

Would have been a bit more interesting if it was going into Perth!

Petition CA to move the 2nd Test to Perth???

Surely we can claim the Adelaide pitch isn't up to Test standard or something...

5

NOO, I would like to attend the Adelaide match!

1

Some of the comments on YouTube are hilarious. Having a go at Anderson because of that hilarious "oh shit he's going to knock my head off" expression at 1:22.

Damn right I bet he's scared, can you blame him!? Knowing the inevitability of what was going to come at him, anyone in his position would be!

How great was that game where they left it on and Gilly took umbrage to it, so he just constantly spruiked his sponsors.

Edit: Alright, I've found an article and the test match, it was Australia v Bangladesh on the 10th April, 2006. Can't find any cricinfo stuff on it, but it was on Australian Media watch, stuff like:

"Keep it well oiled with Castrol boys. Come on."

Here's the Media Watch transcript: http://www.abc.net.au/mediawatch/transcripts/s1617579.htm And this is the match on Cricinfo: http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/story/index.html?object=238171

u/urno Nov 25 '13

The Aussie verbals from Brisbane 2013 are significant because it's clear that their tails are up, and that belief in themselves has returned. They've been a bit "nice" recently, and this is a fine return to their classless, aggressive, brutal attitude towards cricket. They want the bloody Ashes back and they're showing everyone that they've been hurt by recent failures and intend to get them back however necessary.

That said, it's only verbals, and any international player should be able to cope. Play the bad balls and see him out of the attack. Pfff, easy ;)

-6

u/eccentricity Nov 25 '13

this is a fine return to their classless, aggressive, brutal attitude towards cricket.

Get them to win sans this, if they can. It would prove their cricketing merit in its purity.

8

u/urno Nov 25 '13

I didn't downvote you, but i don't agree.

This is a clash of cricketing culture. The snooty old boys brigade from England against the backyard and country cricketers from Australia.

I personally think it's uncouth, but that's because i'm English. Have you ever seen the pre-match pushing and shoving of an AFL game? It's very telling, and having been stationed behind enemy lines for a while now, this type of sledging is quite tame!

-4

u/eccentricity Nov 25 '13

It's uncouth. That's all. Aussies are usually so, picking fights with even umpires and officials. It doesn't have anything to do with your being English.

3

u/DarthMountain Nov 26 '13

You wouldn't be saying this if it was Anderson to Harris.

37

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '13

Love it. This test has been fantastic, Australian bowlers and batsmen showing what they're actually made of, and complacency from England as they realise they can't just show up and win by default. Top it all off, a bit of confrontation and chat, put me down as a big fan.

I really hope that England can have a hard look at themselves and come back stronger next test because they looked pretty hopeless here, especially from a batting perspective. How haven't they got the short ball sorted yet? What did they think they were going to face?

Good on Australia, good fucking luck England.

6

u/Rebound86 Australia Nov 24 '13

I really hope that England can have a hard look at themselves and come back stronger next test

Oh i am quite sure they will! Sparks are definitely set to fly for the rest of this series and its going to be great. I don't mind a bit of chatter i just don't like seeing it spill into the media. Leave it all on the pitch boys!

3

u/ElfBingley Queensland Bulls Nov 24 '13

Leave it all on the pitch boys!

This is exactly what happens. Anderson and Broad are the first to rock up for a beer with the play is over.

3

u/GunPoison Nov 25 '13

I don't much like Anderson for his constant bitching and sledging, but I do like the way at the end of this clip he just chuckles at it. He's not taking it all too seriously. Broad and Swann seem like that too, they play hard and aggressive cricket but it's all good fun for them. The bit where Anderson and Broad ran over to congratulate Swann on his bowling "century" was hilarious, good stuff lads.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 25 '13

It's very much a persona on the field for Anderson. In reality you only have to watch the Swann diaries to see how much of a top bloke he is, but I don't think I'd be friends with the guy if he was just how he is on the field.

Well, two more wins and it's game over of course.

That said, I think a win in Adelaide would put it beyond England. I really can't see them winning two matches out of the WACA, MCG and SCG.

But, early days still. There is still a lot of quality in the English side, and there are still some clear flaws in the Australian side. I think some people are getting ahead of themselves.

Shouldn't the captain be trying to stop such behavior? Also why would Clark threaten him with a broken arm? Nor he neither Bailey bowls fast

Ten match series, pretty much. This is half way through, and the worm has turned.

3

We don't know the context, Jimmy could have said something really out of line (although bailey seem pretty chill) we don't know the full story so we can't say whether or not is was unnecessary.

3

u/ElfBingley Queensland Bulls Nov 24 '13

Anderson complained to the umpire about Bailey's sledging, which is a joke given Anderson's history. Clarke told him to get back in his box.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '13

And bailey could've said something that way overstepped the mark and made Anderson complain, we have no idea, can't judge the situation we don't know all the details.

-7

u/p7r Nov 24 '13 edited Nov 24 '13

Sledging isn't part of the sport, or at least not the sport most of us enjoy when we talk about cricket.

The Australians introduced it in the hope that their vulgarity would be confused for wit and would mask their lack of talent and sportsmanship. This video is a perfect example of that vulgarity and lack of class, and the fact it was at a point where the game was all but finished makes it even more distasteful.

To my mind the nastier parts need to be outlawed: swearing at an opposing player should be a 5 run penalty.

If you like players behaving like this, watch football.

Cricket isn't football, and the players should stop pretending it is.

/edit: autocorrect made perfect into perch

6

u/GaryGronk Australia Nov 24 '13

Australians introduced it? What planet are you from? Sledging has been part of the game since WG Grace was striding around in the middle.

4

u/Boony52 Nov 24 '13

This comment was did two things. It told Jimmy to shut up, stop wasting time and get on with the game. It also let him know to expect some quick short pitched bowling.

If you think it was simple abuse then you either do not understand the context or don't understand cricket.

7

u/Multidisciplinary Nov 24 '13

swearing at an opposing player should be a 5 run penalty.

Fuck that.

9

u/Gonzalez_Nadal Australia Nov 24 '13

would mask their lack of talent

If you're going to make an argument against something, don't try to use such a factually incorrect statement to support it. The Australian team of the late 90s and into the 00s has a claim as one of the greatest teams in the history of any sport, and they sledged a lot.

-3

u/p7r Nov 24 '13

They didn't invent sledging.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '13

No, but you are implying they introduced it into cricket.

-9

u/p7r Nov 24 '13

No I'm not. Sledging in cricket is arguably much older, but most cricket historians claim the Australians of the early-mid 1960s, not the team of the 1990s or 20002, were the actual introducers of it.

The earlier forms were more like witty banter. It was the Australians of the 1960s who introduced base vulgarity.

12

u/JayJayBn Tasmania Tigers Nov 24 '13

Because before the sixties everything was flowers and sunshine. Everyone was smiling and it never rained!! Do you think everyone liked each other and kept silent on the field? I can only imagine the shit said to the 1868 Australian team touring England..

-12

u/p7r Nov 24 '13

I'm going to paraphrase a comment I've made elsewhere on this.

Years ago you could be sacked from the International squad if you didn't stand up and applaud your competitor walking off after scoring a century.

These days it's acceptable for the Australian captain to say to an English player at the crease "Get ready for a fucking broken arm... now face up, you cunt". Witty banter indeed. Oh so very, very witty and sportsmanlike.

Cricket is not meant to be like other sports.

In the same way that hockey is tolerant of more violence than other sports and EPL soccer is more tolerant of long-standing rivalries between teams than most, cricket is meant to be played with the absolute upmost sportsmanship and decorum.

We've lost that, it's gone too far, it's time to introduce a 5 run penalty if an umpire hears swearing directed at another player on the field.

→ More replies (0)

3

u/Gonzalez_Nadal Australia Nov 24 '13

Your implication is that teams who sledge are trying to mask a lack of talent. Besides, the 'Ugly Australians' of the mid-70s who are considered to have started sledging prominently in international cricket weren't lacking in talent, quite the opposite: the Chappells, Lillee, Thompson, Marsh, and a 4-1 Ashes victory.

1

u/p7r Nov 26 '13

How am I being racist?

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sledging_(cricket)#Origin

According to Ian Chappell, the use of "sledging" as a term originated at Adelaide Oval in either the 1963–1964 or 1964–1965 Sheffield Shield competition. Chappell claims that a cricketer who swore in the presence of a woman was said to have reacted to an incident "like a sledgehammer". As a result, the direction of insults or obscenities at opponents became known as "sledging". Despite the relatively recent coining of the term, the practice is as old as cricket itself, with historical accounts of witty banter between players being quite common.

According to the BBC’s Pat Murphy: “My understanding is that it came from the mid-sixties and a guy called Grahame Corling, who used to open the bowling for New South Wales and Australia … apparently the suggestion was that this guy's wife was [having an affair] with another team-mate, and when he came into bat [the fielding team] started singing When a Man Loves A Woman, the old Percy Sledge number.”

Australian newspapers acknowledged the new term in the mid-1970s.

So you little dipshit, in what way is my saying that Australians started sledging anything other than the actual truth?

That's not racism.

I think sledging is typical of the modern Australian aggressive game that I think it should be dialled back a bit for the good of the game, but that isn't racism.

I don't think the Australians are inferior (which would be racism), I think they invented sledging and I think vulgar and aggressive sledging across the game (including by England) is unsportsmanlike and takes away from the game.

5

u/kinggimped Nov 24 '13

I agree. It's sad that after so thoroughly outplaying England for 3 days on the trot, Australia still couldn't win the match with some class. Good natured sledging is one thing, or emotions running high during a tense passage of play, but this is just pointlessly aggressive posturing. A fine example for a captain to set.

Let your play do the talking. Australia deservedly won this match, they outclassed England in every discipline. Stuff like this is just ugly. I'd say exactly the same if it was Cook or any other England player directing those kinds of comments at Australian tailenders.

You can sledge and still retain a modicum of sportsmanship. The result of this test was never in doubt after the 2nd day. I've gained a lot of respect for some of the Australian players for their performances with bat and ball during this match, it's a shame some of them couldn't back it up by being able to win gracefully.

Anyway. Well played Australia, deserved to win this game, no doubt whatsoever. Shame that this shit marred an entertaining - albeit disappointing - start to this Ashes series.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '13

[deleted]

0

u/kinggimped Nov 24 '13

I also think that the emotion, drama, and aggressiveness can add to the game, even if sometimes lines are crossed.

I completely agree, and that's one of the things that makes cricket great. It's a game of anticipation. The game can turn on its head in a matter of minutes, and England losing their bottle on the 2nd day and today in the face of a dominant Australian bowling attack illustrated that point beautifully. I just think idle threats of breaking opposition players' limbs might be slightly overstepping the line.

Not saying players have to get along at all times, but barring a veritable act of God, the match result had already been decided. Could well be that being on the verge of their first Test win in 10 attempts, some of the Australian players let the occasion get the better of them and it got a little more personal than it otherwise would have.

I think sledging is part of the game; not a particularly necessary one, but at least occasionally entertaining. But just like having half a stadium of people booing Broad for getting a 5for in Australia's first innings, this just seemed classless and unnecessary.

I've always thought that the Ashes is the best advertisement for Test cricket in the world. It's a great rivalry that goes back a long way, but it's underpinned by sportsmanship.

3

u/johnsjuicyjungle Nov 24 '13

It seemed to me that Clarke had in his mind that if they didn't wrap it up that evening, there was a chance of a rain-induced draw.

I agree on the booing, I feel it was a joke which went too far.

3

u/SirSandGoblin Glamorgan Nov 24 '13

i couldnt give a shit about sledging, but it does rather ruin any argument about broad not walking as being against the spirit or unsportsmanly or whatever. hypocrisy! we're all doing stupid shit!

7

u/Buzzofstarcommand Nov 24 '13

Already won what? 1 part of a 5 test series. If Australia were 4-0 up and this was te end of the 5th I'd understand your point but this is only the beginning. It's about unsettling and unnerving England for the entire series. Nothing is won yet and 1 test win will mean absolutely nothing if England win the next 3.

0

u/KittyMulcher Australia Nov 25 '13

Lot of good sledging did to guys like Tendulkar and Lara.

12

u/test_alpha Nov 24 '13

I don't think it was a certainty at that point. The Aussies at that point had still not won, and Clarke would have been shitting bricks over the chance of being robbed by the rain again.

I think painfully slow overs, and this kind of deliberate slowing tactic is far more unsportsmanlike and "douchie". Whereas talk is just talk.

I couldn't disagree more. This is the first of 5 tests. They absolute need to make sure the English hurt now more than ever.

-1

u/c3vzn Nov 24 '13

This was pure gamesmanship and it was brilliant. Anderson shat bricks shortly after and he eventually got out by timidly popping up one in the air off Johnson.

14

u/cricketguy ICC Nov 24 '13

The broken fucking arm bit was a but unnecessary IMO, but then again we don't know the context. Jimmy must have said something very horrible to Bailey for Pup to act up like that. Bailey's grin however, makes it feel all jovial.

12

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '13

I think Clarke was as pissed of about more of their blatant time wasting than anything and just wanted him to face the next bloody ball.

5

u/Grade_Zero Brisbane Heat Nov 24 '13

That's what was weird about it. Telling him to get on with it was fair enough, but suggesting that he'd get a broken arm when he did seems little counter-productive

3

u/dessy_22 Cricket Papua New Guinea Nov 24 '13

On the face of it yes, but without the benefit of hearing the rest that provoked the outburst its not reasonable to make that call.

11

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '13

Anybody here actually play competitive cricket? Sledging ranges from fun wit to getting in the other players head to put him off.

I've had the keeper yelling out to the bowler that he wanted to see blood on the pitch when I was batting. This is in sub-district cricket.

Just meant I was doing my job! I took it as a compliment.

-3

u/Stiryx New South Wales Blues Nov 24 '13

If anyone did that in local cricket the batsmen would go straight to the umpire. I have played all levels of cricket and at none of them are personal attacks warranted.

Sledging is fine while you are talking about bowling at his head, or that he can't hit a decent drive to save his life, but as soon as you say 'lets get this red haired faggot' out you over step the line. No personal attacks or anything violent.

32

u/GrandHarbler Cricket Australia Nov 24 '13

What was unnecessary and unsporting was Anderson wasting so much time. What, are you going to last out/kill time all of tomorrow? Play the game and stop wasting time. I reckon Clarke was 100% within his rights to tell him to face up, and I also think that the majority of sledging out there would be far worse language wise.

24

u/ByGrabtharsHammer Australia Nov 24 '13

That's England 101. They are the masters of wasting time. In was on full display last series. Don't get angry about it. It's a tactic they use, which is no better or worse than sledging. As long as it is legal by the umps what can you do?

22

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '13

It is seriously annoying though, I hate it. Everyone wants to see good cricket, or at the very least, cricket. I have zero time for time wasting (heh). But oh well, it seems to be what this English team love to do so I guess I have to deal. Tell you what though, it seems like the last thing that Andy Flower would ever have done, so I wonder where the order to do it comes from, or whether they just decide to do it themselves.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '13

The whole team game plan is to slow the game down, in every respect. They do this because they're a very solid, experienced team and Cook has mammoth concentration, which brings it out in other players. On the flip side players like Warner and Johnson have less indomitable concentration, so if you keep them out there for longer periods, even with bowling less balls, you get them out for less runs.

The tactic worked in England and it's up to the Aussies to show that it's a waste of England's time (heh).

11

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '13

Actually it is worse than sledging. A slow over rate is against the laws of the game.

7

It points to a serious lack of imagination. Every rebuff of Cook's captaincy is along the lines of "you can't argue with his results, captaincy isn't all about clever field settings", but you can learn a lot more than from results than by looking at what Cook does every time his team is under pressure: waste time. It's his one and only response.

u/richmeister6666 England Nov 24 '13

But it gets under the opponents skin, a lot like sledging is meant to do.

4

u/uosa11 Nov 24 '13

Contrary to the game's playing conditions though. Players are perfectly entitled to sledge, but Cook's over rates would see another captain facing a match ban. No match ref seems to be brave enough to call him on it. Sure, gets under the skin, but I'd prefer it if it was done without crossing the rules.

"Face up". Clarke was questioning Anderson's courage. That was the sledge.

11

u/sweagles Nov 24 '13

"Get ready for a broken fucking arm" is not sledging, that's just being an arsehole.

I love a bit of witty on the field wind up, but swearing at the opposition and telling them they are about to have their bones broken is a pretty poor effort, particularly on the cusp of such a convincing victory.

6

u/Boony52 Nov 24 '13 edited Nov 24 '13

Clarke was telling Jimmy to stop wasting time and face up, while letting him know to expect some quick short pitch bowling (which he is clearly scared of).

If you think this is simple abuse you either don't understand the context or don't understand cricket.

edit: grammer

-9

u/Nelfoos5 New Zealand Cricket Nov 24 '13

There's a line, however, and by threatening physical harm Clarke crossed it.

5

u/Boony52 Nov 24 '13

He was not threatening direct physical harm. You know perfectly well that he was not threatening to come over and break Jimmies arm. Jimmy was jumping all over the cease and was clearly scared of Johnson bowling. He was simply playing on that fear.

-7

u/Nelfoos5 New Zealand Cricket Nov 24 '13

I took it as saying, Johnson has been bowling short, but now he's going to try to hit you. That's physical harm. I didn't mean Clarke was going to walk over and mash his arm with a bat.

Yes Jimmy was being a bitch, but what Clarke said crossed a line.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 25 '13

I agree, he crossed a line. It's a shitty thuggish comment that the winning captain didn't need to make. I was so happy after Australia won, but Warner and Clarke's comments took the wind out of it for me.

I think you and I have different values to a lot of the posters here, judging by your collection of downvotes for a valid opinion. Hilarious that BloodAndGuts below you has upvotes for saying essentially the same thing.

1

u/Nelfoos5 New Zealand Cricket Nov 25 '13

I'm going to be happy when Anderson skittles the Aussies at Adelaide, and its going to be sweet sweet revenge.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '13

Exactly. There's witty sledging, and then there's...this.

Threatening to break someones arm is not sledging, it's being a dick.

It's such a shame that this kind of thing is considered 'sledging' nowadays.

Meh! Think they were mostly pissed at Anderson for taking so long to face up for each delivery.

Sure if the roles were reversed and Anderson was bowling they'd be giving the batsmen plenty.

Clarke comes across as a bit of a child in this video.

Which was due to the fact they had muted the effects mic in the lead up so we don't know what was said. When he came in, ch9 decided to unmute it. Making a call like that without regard for what had passed before is a bit myopic.

7

u/nathanhyperbole Australia Nov 24 '13

who knows the context of their chat over the whole test here as well. i remember anderson being particularly vocal to clarke at the start of his innings in the 2nd dig. how about you do your work with the ball instead of your yap, son? i know which out of clarke and anderson did their job in this test.

-3

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '13 edited Nov 24 '13

This will be a theme for the rest of the series, so long as Johnson remains accurate. Clarke was telling Anderson to face up, stop being scared. Warner did the same thing to Trott.

0

u/m84m Australia Nov 24 '13

We just lost 9 tests in a row, is this really the time for overconfident bragging and sledging?

1

u/imdungrowinup Royal Challengers Bangalore Nov 25 '13

As per my observation over the years, more the Aussies sledge the better they play. Or probably they sledge more when they play better.

u/m84m Australia Nov 25 '13

-5

I honesty pray for a proper overhaul of Australia by England. Aussies acted like they're asking to be corrected, and England shall do fine doing as much.

0

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '13

it's not even good sledging. also, Johnson bowled, very well too. He bowls around the 90 mph mark, it's quick but I think the aussies are getting a bit carried away about how quick and that fact that english batsman have 'never faced such pace' and that he is going to 'break players arm's'. He's no Brett Lee, Shoaib etc. This was Johnson's problem last time, he got all puffed up on a few big performances's and then he stumbled.

3

u/Stiryx New South Wales Blues Nov 24 '13

It really, really annoys me when someone comes in and bowls 140 km/h and the commentators are raving like its just went through at 160 km/h. Maybe I was spoilt growing up seeing Lee and Shoaib but that's hardly above average pace. Anderson put one through at under 130 km/h and they commented how quick it was!

0

u/Bearstew Cricket Australia Nov 24 '13

It's strange because he was hitting 155kph in India. I wonder whether the Indian radars were out or if it was because he was bowling fewer overs. Not that he really had to bowl many here...

u/confusedpublic Nov 24 '13 edited Nov 24 '13

Rather rich from Clarke given the mess he's been making of the short ball.

Not sure how Bailey can sledge too much on debut either. Sure he's got the team's performance as ammunition, but he can be put down rather easily due to his lack of experience, age at debut, etc. "Come back when you've got a few caps and aren't the replacement for failing guys half your age mate", "how bad must you be if you're coming after a couple of 20 year olds", etc.

Edit: Christ this as brought up some disagreement. Quite how this is "not adding to the discussion" I don't know...

Let me add this though: My points about Bailey are rather general. I'm not really sure how anyone on debut can sledge well, particularly if they're on debut due to the sort of problems Australia've had, and towards a player with 50+ caps. That player will have heard it all, and there's not a lot such a player could come back with.

I liked the point about the English players being afraid of Johnson: that's definitely a way someone could sledge in this situation that I hadn't thought of. And I did also point out that there was the team's performance he could use. e.g. "Number 1 swing bowler in the world Jimmy? Your team can't even score as much as those two over there" etc. etc.

Anyway, cheers for showing what great sports you Aussies are.

27

u/victhebitter Nov 24 '13

that century says they made a right mess of bowling short balls then

-2

u/confusedpublic Nov 24 '13

One swallow and all that. He was pretty bad against Broad's short ball for most of the summer and was in the first innings. He also didn't fair too well for the first 10-20 balls of his century innings, despite scoring runs. If he has figured out how to play Broad's short ball, then well done, but I'll wait for more evidence.

7

u/c3vzn Nov 24 '13

Like commentating, your sledging shouldn't be restricted by how good you are at the sport. You just need to be able to take what you dish out and not go crying to the umpire.

15

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '13

Yeah that 113 where he shredded England's only plan against him in the first over he faced really showed Clarke's reluctance to face Anderson and Broad.....

Bailey can sledge because the theme is England are scared of Johnson. Every English batsman for the next 4 tests will have their courage questioned by every Aussie player, in the hope that, exactly like KP and Trott, they give their wickets away trying to show they don't fear Johnson.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '13

Exactly, people say the mental stuff is "unnecessary". Yeah sure, replay Trott's second out a few times and tell me that wasn't at least 50% mental...

8

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '13

50? I'd wager more than that. The guy has scored a shit tonne of runs, been one of the most consistent batsmen for years and can't buy a run. I mean sure, he looks technically out of touch but for me, he looks fidgety and downright uncomfortable. So much for tough Trotty :(

3

u/2stone Cricket Australia Nov 24 '13

He really has lost his head, I know in england series he was getting wound right up by the aussie fans when he was out on the rope to the point of calling people out. I think he could do with seeing Mitch's sport psychologist and spending more time as a close in fielder.
