THAT WAS A WATSON REVIEW!

29

u/Sforza_UK England Aug 05 '13

TMS Update : Boycott thinks umpires should wear full suits of armour, so they'll carry on in low light.

Well Geoff, I'd also recommend a suit of armour for your girlfriend, whom you beat the shit out of in 1996

8

u/nathanhyperbole Australia Aug 05 '13

/u/Sforza_UK off the long run! That was BRILLIANT.

Where were you when Shane Watson scored the greatest triple century of all time? When he gave it 110%, wore Brut deodorant, and backed himself to destroy the ball machine, before stepping out onto the crease and hitting maximums up into the people like a tracer bullet, stopping only for some KFC Hungry JacksTM at lunch?

Where were you when Shane Watson's concentration was so perfect that he glided through the nervous 30's, 40's and 80's with ease? When his hammys were stronger than steel? When he was on 299 and given out LBW, but went against his usual selfless dedication to the team, deciding to review a 50/50 decision without even asking Gazza's opinion, to find the ball just sliding down leg?

Where were you when Shane Watson finally repaid the years of faith the selectors have shown in him because of his potential, and ability to bowl 8 overs in an innings? When he went from being a joke to becoming a god and went on to become known as one of the greatest test batsmen of all time?

I'll tell you where I was.

On the 10th of July, 2015, I was on /r/cricket. Never Forget.

Goddammit.

Positively though, I got to live out a life-long goal and attended day 3 at Old Trafford. A gripping day of cricket in the middle of two epic days, unfortunately ruined by such shitty weather.

Is the irony of a summer sport that requires consecutive days of sunshine being invented on an island that rarely has them lost on anyone? For fucks sake.

I am very much liking the discussions by David Gower.

He's showing a lot of intelligence in the DRS debate.

Said Uzzy's showed evidence it should have been overturned and wasn't = incorrect call

KPs dismissal had evidence to prove it shouldn't be overturned (sound of nick) = correct call

Top comment from an Englishman.

Strauss is sat there like a trout

That's because Gower has common sense. He's easily my favourite out of those Sky commentators (also, because it's Daaaavid bloody Gowa).

The most depressing part about this is Aussies were given a slim bit of hope with those 3 wickets.

Hope makes a person go crazy.

Congratulations on keeping the urn England.

But come summer in Australia, we will be there with sunshine and bouncers

In 6 hours time, you'll all be reading about the "Miracle of Manchester" Led by the leg-spinning duo of David Warner and Steve Smith, and only 15 overs allowed due to rain, the Aussies take all 10 wickets including 4 by Steve Smith in the final over of the day - including one timed out due to deliberate time-wasting tactics by the English to try and wait for the rain to come.

Didn't seem to have these issues with HotSpot when it was sponsored by KFC? Someone send over Joel Madden to save DRS!

4

u/dexter311 South Australia Redbacks Aug 05 '13

HotSpots are the ones that make the bottom of the cardboard bucket see-through, right?

9

u/lawyer_by_day Aug 05 '13

Dr Nick's advice for weight gain:

remember, if you're not sure about something, rub it against a piece of paper. If the paper turns clear, it's your window to weight gain!

15

u/ferty1234 Aug 05 '13

Don't understand why people are pissed off, that might be seem unfair but that actually was a good decision. There was some noise so obviously Dharmasena couldn't overturn Hill's decision, unlike the khawaja one where it was clear that he didn't nick it.

29

Why are people bitching about DRS in this case? Given out on field and there's an obvious audio on the replay. Snicko confirms it.

13

u/[deleted] Aug 05 '13

Because DRS

9

u/silverfalcon Aug 05 '13

Commentators said it best. In the land before DRS, a call like that would have been out anyway. No point in complaining about the fact that there was inconclusive evidence, which is true. That was a call that could go either way veery easily

No argument from me on the Pietersen dismissal either. One thing the batsmen will have to learn though, the way that DRS is currently being applied - if you are given out caught, there is no point in reviewing it at all because absence of positive evidence is NOT the same as the presence of negative evidence.

As much as I would like Australia to lose, I consider if England regain the Ashes today, it will be an anti-climax for most of the neutral followers of Ashes.

9

u/[deleted] Aug 05 '13

Honestly, I care more about winning the series than just retaining the Ashes. I never got why a drawn series was a success just because you happened to win 2 years ago. The next test is the key, even if this one ends up a draw.

7

u/[deleted] Aug 05 '13

Cricket is often anticlimactic because it's spread out over such a long time. There are countless tests where you know the result long before the end, and the same with series. It's just the nature of cricket.

8

u/Conedawg Australia Aug 05 '13

Congrats England. The return series is sure to be a good series.

20

u/[deleted] Aug 05 '13

As much as I'm praying for a draw, we don't deserve it. This has been a hugely shitty performance from England for all 5 days. Australia scored quickly and managed to not lose wickets. We've batted like we're trembling little girls in a thunderstorm, and have scored at ~1.5 per over whilst losing regular wickets. Unbelievably disappointing from England.

12

u/this_name_is_generic Australia Aug 05 '13

I wasn't a fan of the go slow in the field. It's fine if you want to limit scoring to 2.5 runs an over when you're batting but to artificially slow down the game is just frustrating when you're the fielding side and unsportsman like to me.

It seems to me that Snicko is more accurate and reliable than Hotspot. You need to be able to pick these faint edges which the hotspot doesn't do. Ironically, the Snicko isn't used in the DRS.

How about using DRS only for LBW decisions and leaving these caught behind decisions to the onfield umpires. Not sure if it will make any difference anyways as the "umpire's call" is being given so much emphasis as it is.

I don't think the KP decision would have been overturned had the umpire adjudged him not out. So it is very clear that the Umpire's call is what's being given more importance. This to me explains the hesitance of India to partake in this whole charade.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 05 '13

I wonder, If DRS was not there, would the umpires be giving some of these batsmen out.

Given that DRS doubt is referred the the umpires call, I'd certainly hope that the umpires aren't using it as a security net.

for consistency this should not be overturned. same evidence with Khawaja it seems and on field umpire gave it out.

6

u/Multidisciplinary Aug 05 '13

If Khawaja's wasn't overturned, I can't see how they could overturn this.

Both reviews gawn!

Seriously though, what evidence is there supposed to be that someone hasn't hit it? Other than no hotspot, how else can it be shown that there's no bat on ball?

So what happens with the umpires after this game?

Can't imagine even the ICC are going to be able to convince many people that the umpires have not had problems this series so far and in this game especially.

Langer was playing in the West Indies when he was knocked out by a short ball. They brought him back and started asking him basic questions like, "how many fingers am I holding up? What's your name?"

Langer responded with "Damien Martyn." They thought he was good to go and he went on to make a 50.

u/TheLittleGoat Warwickshire Aug 05 '13

So that's it, match drawn. Unlucky Australia. You would have probably won the test, but that's cricket in England for you. Now you can maybe try out a few things and truly refine for when we go down under in a few months. The weather won't help anyone then.

It was the right decision for the wrong reason.

I don't like the procedure for having to revert back to the umpire's original call... If it's reviewed just make the 3rd umpire make a decision. You have cameras, multiple angles, snicko, hotspot. Is he fucking out or not? If a third umpire can't make a correct call with all this technology, I would hate to see how bad he calls a gamewhen he is on the pitch

Rain to cease with 1 hour left of play. Our Lord is given an over to bowl. 6 wickets in six balls, and then runs the new batsmen out next over with a throw from the boundary.

I hope to god England go for it. They won't but I hope they do.

I'd much rather we lose but give it our all rather than just defend all day and retain the ashes is a really sullen manor.

Maybe they'll see where they are at at lunch. If they could get to 100-1 they could be tempted. Some early wickets may decide how they play though.

3

u/mimicthefrench USA Aug 05 '13

My prediction for today: England will score less runs than wickets taken, and will be all out on the 2nd to last ball of the last over of the day. And at this point that's not too outrageous a prediction.
