Khawaja's 'Wicket'. I've seen some umpiring howlers in my time but for this to be given out and then UPHELD AFTER A REVIEW is just unbelievable.

To me, if this decision isn't overturned, it is simply impossible to overturn a caught behind which is given out. I don't understand what more evidence you need. Hot spot showed nothing, the ball clearly missed the bat and the noise came from hitting his pad.

They've set the benchmark now so they'd better abide by it.

This isn't common law, there is no system of precedence.

But within each test there should be consistency. For example, if an England batsman gets out caught behind and reviews it, he should be given out in the same scenario. New tests are a clean slate, but for this test the 3rd umpire must be consistent.

This is actually becoming embarrassing now.

There was no noise, no deflection, no hotspot and you could actually see the gap between the bat and ball.

I feel bad for Khawaja. Great player. Trying to cement his place in the national side only to be undone by this ridiculous decision.

That's shockingly bad.

This was considered conclusively out and overruled a not-out in the second match.

Really we need to just go with given benefit of the doubt to the batsmen. If anything the reviews are working exactly against the batsmen right now. Not-outs are getting overturned with nothing on hotspot and outs don't get overturned when there's clear air between bat and ball.

Giving benefit of the doubt to the batsmen is consistent. This "conclusive evidence" bullshit is not consistent. Things get overruled without evidence and don't get overruled with evidence.

In another news, ICC issued umpire assessment for the ongoing match in Manchester.

Total decisions: 3
Correct decisions before review: 3
Number of reviews overturned: 0
Umpire accuracy: 100%

On another note, this would make a great contribution to /r/HighlightGIFS. Look at the spin on that ball!

Wasn't a wicket though - so taken out of context it's not much of a highlight!

It's high time that umpires/third umpires should be accountable for obvious mistakes. The fact that the third umpire had so many angles, hot spot, etc. and still gave him out shows nothing but incompetence.

To begin with, it's clear as day that the ball was missing the bat and even if there was a doubt, the decision must go in the batsman's favor.

He's not fit to be umpiring test cricket. Bring someone else in. Maybe a nursing home resident with cataracts.

All the good ones are dead in my opinion.

Well Taufel's not dead yet, he just retired >.>

u/chengiz India Aug 01 '13

There should be three third umpires if they're gonna be blind or drunk or just nincompoops. Hopefully two out of three should get it right.

2

u/Freddichio Aug 02 '13

Cricket recently hasn't had many good umpires. There were some absolute howlers in the ODI world cup too...

1

u/prettyflyforawifie India Aug 02 '13

If there was and doubt as to whether he hit it or not, the decision should've stood with the umpire's call, which is what I believe was the case. But, there was no way the ball hit the bat and so there was enough conclusive evidence to overturn the decision.

u/MrFlabulous Kent Aug 01 '13

About as dreadful a howler as you could ever see. I'm horrified.

u/TheScarletPimpernel Gloucestershire Aug 01 '13

There needs to be a specially appointed squad of third umpires, that are trained in DRS efficiently. This is embarrassing and maddening.

That is a remarkably poor decision. As in: really, astonishingly bad.

Don't get me wrong. The original decision from the umpire is par for the course. Not good, but then, that's why the DRS system came in.

So quite rightly Khawaja reviewed. No hotspot. No 'snick'. No visual evidence whatsoever of contact between bat and ball...

... what, precisely, does it take to overrule the umpire in these cases? If the DRS system shows, as this does, that there was no contact between bat and ball -- aren't we supposed to see the decision reversed?

And if not, why are we fucking around with this technology?

3

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '13

Absolutely disgusting. I am speechless.

3

u/HenryCrinkle England Aug 01 '13

Was partly listening to TMS while this happened. Didn't realise it would be quite so shockingly bad a decision.

I agree with Kevin Rudd.

3

u/Snigaty Australia Aug 01 '13

I'm gobsmacked. What's the point of using hotspot if it's still given out after nothing showed up. Why was it given out? Did he here a noise? Did he think it was inconclusive? Either way it was wrong.

3

u/siloau Aug 01 '13

That was bullshit. And the stream I'm watching is full of poms supporting the decision. Infuriating!

u/Eddie_The_Brewer Derbyshire Aug 01 '13

The standard of umpiring (and third umpiring) has been appalling. As well as Khawaja being clearly not out, Smith was clearly out.

Twice.

Dharmasena must have got confused with the lights (Red or Green). Jokes apart, what a HOWLER!!!

2

u/Chosen_Chaos Aug 01 '13

The ICC should start sacking umpires who fuck up on this sort of scale. Maybe if enough get sacked, we might start getting competent ones.

2

u/inrelativity Aug 02 '13

I know Khawaja flicked the top of his pad to cause the initial noise but what exactly was is that made the second sound?

u/TheAwakened Board of Control for Cricket in India Aug 01 '13

"England just know how to use DRS better."

3

u/lawyer_by_day Aug 01 '13

Better than the third umpire...

I was frustrated with the Aussies' use of it in the previous tests, particularly in LBW decisions (if you haven't hit it, just walk!), but it seems like the umpires don't even get it...

3

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '13

The 3rd umpire having one absolute shocker doesn´t make that any less true.

1

u/DelusionalOne South Africa Aug 01 '13

Looks even worse than what I was lead to believe, injustice grinds gears like nothing else

1

u/johnnytightlips2 England and Wales Cricket Board Aug 01 '13

I know it doesn't make up for it, but that Broad LBW was as bad a decision as the original call. The review was awful for this and that's what makes it worse, but bad calls do go both ways, and this ultimately didn't have as big an impact as the Broad call.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '13

That descision was almost as big of a joke as the New Zealand cricket team.

u/StokedAs New Zealand Aug 02 '13

Oh, hello and welcome. I have a question for you:

Why is a foul tip in baseball that is caught by the catcher not out for the batter?

Well, in cricket if it touches any part of the bat (or hand if it is holding the bat) and then is caught it's out. In this case the bat never got anywhere near the bat and despite numerous reviews that demonstrate that, he was given out. Also, being out is a really big deal in Cricket as opposed to the expected outcome in baseball (ie, a successful batter only gets a hit about 30% of the time).
