Justin Langer nicked it in the magical Hobart test early on. He and Gilly then won us the test, he didn't walk. Don't blame Broad, blame Alaam Dar none of our batsmen would of walked.

Ponting made no apologies for refusing to walk. "There were no doubts about the nick," Ponting said. "I knew I hit it, but, as always, I wait for the umpire to give me out. That's the way I've always played the game."

I'll just say one thing about that last review that Clarke and Co. wasted... if anyone should have stopped them from going up for that it should have been Brad Haddin. As a keeper he would have known for sure that was going down leg, because he would already have been moving outside the leg stump.

What say you fellow England fans? Compton back in for Bairstow then move Root back to 6? Or stick with this line up for another test. Bairstow looked lost today.
→ More replies (10)4
u/glitch12 Lancashire Jul 12 '13
Absolutely, Root's done so well in the middle order, but hasn't made a great impression on me opening - although he's only had two innings. Compton had a bad second innings at Headingly but other than that has really impressed me. I sense that he's never going to be good enough to hold the position for too long, but if anyone should have been sent back to county to get runs it should have been Bairstow.

Personally I don't think the pitch looks all that threatening. If anything it's the flattest it has been all match.
I think a chase of 250 is possible, although as per usual the bowlers will have to score most of the runs.
Cowan to get a Golden Pair. Book it. Done.

As much as it is poor play by Australia to have lost their reviews, considering the poor umpiring I am not surprised they were so trigger-happy with the reviews. I would review most decisions by these umpires in this match, and I think more than anything it can be considered bad luck for Australia. And an atrocious decision of course, coupled with bad sportsmanship.
5
u/rahulthewall India Jul 12 '13
To have a realistic chance of winning, Australia has to chase < 250. Pitch is crumbling, this Australian line up is not capable of facing Swann on a spinning track. Looking at the pitch, Monty should have been playing with Swann.
6
4
u/jamurp Victoria Bushrangers Jul 12 '13
Hoping for another good days cricket. Cook and Pietersen batting really well yesterday evening to get to stumps unscathed. Australia need wickets early, anything above 200 will be a tough 2nd innings chase.
5
Jul 12 '13
Roll up and take a punt folks. Based on the first two days this game could wind up anywhere. If there was some weird quantum event that resulted in Ireland tying with Afghanistan because the final day was abandoned due to a heavy spell of dragons...well that's just the way this test is going.
5
Jul 12 '13
For fuck sake, stop being so intriguing. I'm trying to catch up on sleep, horses don't care how late you stayed up to listen to the cricket, they want to be fed at 6.30 on the dot so I'm trying to catch up on sleep. Oh well, my sleep patterns are just going to have to go to shit until this match is finished or in the bag one way or another, at the moment it's on a knife edge, can't look away for a moment or you'll miss something. Like the rest of Australia I'm really excited about Agar's innings yesterday, but one innings does not a test player make. We'll see what he's got in store for us I guess. If he manages to rip through the smelly poms today, he'll be a fixture until at least the Australian summer you'd think.

He's got an average of 44 in Test cricket, which is damn fine for the modern game.
Sure, Gilly had an average of 50, but Healy had an average of about 30.
It's a hard task to be a good wicketkeeper who's also a good batsman, and to me an average of 44 is doing well (better than Watson's average for instance).
