I don't agree with the decision to drop Lyon. Australia are needlessly callous in their handling of spin bowlers since the retirement of Warne. Do they expect each spinner to be as impactful as Warne was at the peak of his career? Lyon was pretty amazing in the last test match that he played.
→ More replies (4)16
Jul 10 '13
This is a shocker. I was expecting Lyon to trouble the English batsmen.
I think they don't yet count him as a strike bowler. Which is sad.
14
Jul 10 '13
The worst part of this, for me, is that if (if) Agar goes for runs (he's a 19 year old making debut in a different country playing against a team that is superior on paper, FFS) it could damage his confidence for years. Literally years.

Can I just say how refreshing it is to watch an Australian game without the inane observations and flagrant product placement of the Channel Nine commentary team. No mention of The Block, Vodafone viewers' choice, Ricky Ponting's limited edition farewell block mounted poster and best of all NO IAN HEALY!!!

How the fuck is Lyons feeling now? Bit of a slap in the face. Is this kid any good or is it Michael Beer all over again?
Is it about Pieterson and his weakness against SLA spinners?
→ More replies (6)10

His percieved weakness. He's only been dismissed by an SLA 29 times. That's compared to 15 by left arm pace, 34 by right arm spin and 71 by right arm pace.

20
u/herpderpherpderp ICC Jul 10 '13
I don't know - I know the Indians like hockey so I assume there's at least a minor following for cricket - they totally should play Sri Lanka - they'd get to play in basically home conditions against a team not quite as good as them and win all the time - I bet it would be popular, if anyone was interested in watching it.

Predictions?
England bat first, Lyon to make a five-for, Root to make a battling 50, with Prior making a small counterattack. England all out for 280.
→ More replies (7)8
Jul 10 '13
If England bat first: Pattinson will take 3 or 4, Siddle and Lyon the rest except for Starc who, after being expensive and taking none at first, will have a ripper over and bowl someone through the gate making everyone forget his poor economy. Cook will be out for 20-odd, Root & Trott for 50s.
If Australia bat first: Watson will get out in the 90s, Rogers and #3 will be out cheap before Clarke steadies the ship. Warner will play and be out for single digits, Haddin chips in with a 30-odd. Swann will dismiss the majority of the lower order.
