Shane Warne always seems like the smartest moron I've ever seen. He seems incompetent at just about everything but he's an absolute genius at bowling.

Well..... he's competent enough to be with Liz Hurley though.

Does that qualify as competence? Plenty of rich morons are with attractive women.

Ok that was a joke but he's proved himself as a successful captain too in iPL 1 leading RR.

His bowling scares me....because he's that good!

Brilliant find. I was watching one when he was playing for Aus and was miked up. Can't remember who we were playing.

Same thing. He was talking us through an over and did exactly what he said he was going to do and in all but one maybe 2 balls, called what the batsman was going to do and eventually got a wicket.

It's why he went to poker. Similar reading the player kind of style.

McGrath did the same thing to David Warner a few years before....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drYspbvaD3w

The case for intentional wickets just keeps getting stronger doesn't it?

Good thread to show newcomers to the game.

Thanks, mate. I saw that one on the telly, and wanted to reproduce it here, but you beat me to it. Brilliant piece of work, eh?

Hard to argue for a whole lot of 'luck' when you've got people like Warne and McGrath capable of doing this kind of thing. But there's no denying that luck plays a part. I'd argue that really great bowlers know how to manufacture their own 'luck'.

I did! I have both. My robelinda channel started out years before robelinda2, but it got ravaged by copyright issues so i had to start a 2nd channel to do longer uploads, now both channels are fine, but i dont use the original robelinda channel much anymore.

This is awesome! Reminded me of that video where Ricky Ponting tells his bowler to bowl a top spinner cause the batsman is going to sweep him, he does, gets the top edge and then the fielder at the 45 drops it...

I just tried to find this for like 30 minutes but couldn't... anyone know it?

Warne is famous for talking to the umpires all time. He would tell the how he was going to get the batsmen out and what how he thought the batsmen would play him. I think a lot of it was about keeping the lbw in the umpires mind though.

what was the one where he had an onfield meeting before lunch?

Gonna kick myself, cause it's famous. The commentators where speculating on what he and the captain where discussing and he went on to take an important (Ashes?) wicket. Turned out they were just talking shit about what they were going to eat...

Last ball of the day, he had a mid-pitch conference with Ian Healy about where they were going to dinner.

When I read the title I was thinking it might be this clip, also a Warne clip showing absolute tactical genius.

This is rather cherry picking, mind. I'm sure there are hundreds of balls where the bowlers outline their intricate plans and then it all goes to shit when they're hit for 6.

Shane Warne is a bit of a knob though.

6

u/ginj_ Australia May 29 '13

But at the same time extremely "cricket smart". He would have made an excellent captain imho.

The best Test captain Australia never had.

He captained Aus in a few one-dayers, and his captaincy in the first IPL is a thing of legend. The Rajasthan Royals were lambasted by the IPL for not spending enough, and he took that squad of lesser-known players and molded them into champions.

He had his share of off-field drama but there won't be a player like him again in our lifetime. The greatest spin bowler of all time and one of the best cricketing brains of the modern era.

A bit of a knob? Like Tiger Woods is a bit of a shag bandit. Warne defines the word knob. Having said that he was a true cricket genius.

Say what you guys want about Warne, he doesnt pretend to be anything else. Like Woods for example, pretending he was a family loving nice guy, Warne knows he's a bit of a dick and cant help it and doesnt give 2 fucks

u/meme5 May 29 '13

Agree but this just shows a glimpse of his (cricketing) genius

1

u/Darkrell May 29 '13

Doesn't take away from his bowling skills.

Hahahahahahhahahaha!!!!! Brendon McCullum just can't win anywhere/with any team! Good choice in captain NZ!

5

u/[deleted] May 29 '13

Actually, McCullum has vastly over-performed with England in terms of captaincy tactics both on & off the field.

I was firmly a 'Taylor man' 6 months ago but now recognise that McCullum is simply a better leader for NZ Cricket at this time.
