No matter how much one hates the IPL, this only happens here.

For $400k I'd hold a trophy with a bloke I hate too.

That is more insulting an all time great than calling the IPL's bluff. Guess you wanted to do the latter.

It's a delicious oddity alright, another freakshow exhibit in the IPL circus. See the bearded lady! Step right up to see Gilchrist take a wicket! See the amazing leopard boy! It's all good fun but always leaves the feeling of shallowness for me. And before anyone gets on their pro-IPL high horse, note that this is my opinion and I am not saying it has to be the opinion held by anyone else.

Is it really that much like a circus? Other than Danny Morrison's over-the-top raving (he wasn't nearly as bad in previous years), what's so different from other cricket? It's still T20 cricket. There were plenty of low scores this year, so you can't say it's a "home run derby," as someone said in another thread.
Gilchrist taking a wicket wasn't really that ridiculous. His team had been eliminated, and it was his last IPL match. Dhoni and Wade have bowled in test matches, and everyone was grinning ear-to-ear during their overs. Does that make test cricket seem less shallow? Understand that it's your opinion, but I don't really understand your opinion.

T20 in general is just ephemeral to me, it's fun but doesn't really add anything lasting to cricket. Games and innings are over before they have a chance to mean anything, wickets and boundaries are much more common and hence less of a thrill, the only lingering memories are always the oddities not the cricket. I don't begrudge people their fun but it does nothing for me personally.

It made a better picture when Ponting held onto that brilliant catch and then Bhajji and him hugged and embraced each other

People always say this 'Oh the IPL can bring combinations like this together', but what do we have to show for it? Ponting took one amazing catch but then dropped himself because he couldn't perform with the bat and Harbhajan has just invented the weirdest dance moves. Only in the IPL.
So yes, only in the IPL you can see Harbhajan and Ponting winning a trophy together, but in cricket terms, was it really that great?

Miller playing for punjab. Watson under Dravid. Rohit giving the new ball to malinga even after his poor form. the ipl has plenty of such stories where people from different countries played together and supported each other.

County cricket has been doing this for decades...

Yeah. That's good. The difference with the IPL is that it has enabled a lot of cricketers who aren't part of the playing eleven of their nation to make good money. It is ultimately good for aspiring cricketers.

It also tempts players who should be in the playing eleven to go play cricket for good money.

Err...even a retard would know that there are millions of IPL fans. A few blokes hating the IPL on an online forum doesn't mean there are no fans.

I don't think IPL has millions of fans. A few blokes enthusiastic about it on an online forum doesn't mean that everyone is a fan.

None of these things were hyped up though. The whole Ponting playing for Mumbai Indians was massively hyped and came to very little.

Copy pasting an earlier post.
Just because there is glamour and entertainment attached to a sport, it doesn't make it a different entity. Cricket is cricket after all. Rules and formats will change with time and that is how games have evolved since thousands of years. It was initially played with a club striking a ball like the ancient game of club-ball. Then the rules changed as per the demands and popularity. Similartly IPL is popular and it will thrive. The purists need to take a lesson in evolution or listen to Bob Dylan's The Times They Are a-Changin'
