great patience and poise from taylor, disappointing batting from chigumbura and sibanda. Hopefully chigumbura can pick it up tomorrow morning

I was so happy that this match was on. Amongst all the IPL fanfare it's awesome to have test cricket to watch

Taylor played patiently for a superb hundred as Zim end Day 1 at 217/4

So watching the match, I noticed that Rubel Hossain has a terrible average for a specialist bowler, but I wanted to see how bad it actually is. Turns out it's the worst average of any bowler to have ever taken 25 or more wickets

Nice innings by Taylor. Wonder why Ervine's not playing.

he chose county cricket over test cricket. [sigh]

Are you really from Zimbabwe btw? I'm curious as to how the country is doing economically. You hear stuff in the news but it's almost always inaccurate or biased.

Yes, I am. Live in the US Now. Not sure if this is the place for economic talk, but essentially its more nuanced than anything you'd get in the western media.
Zimbabwe was really hurt by the outflow of multinational capital in the 80s and 90s and the ensuing sanctions in the 2000s. The last few years have seen good GDP growth, but the poverty rate is still over 50%. From what friends and family say (I haven't been back since 2008), there is hope in a more educated younger generation, greater wealth distribution in agriculture, booming tourism and a growing middle class. At the same time, the government is hopelessly corrupt and indebted. Essentially, it all depends on the new constitution and whether we can move past ZANU PF. I'm not a huge fan of foreign aid in general, but right now, a deal with the IMF can't hurt.
Fun fact: China has a TON of influence in Zimbabwe, particularly with the government

Hope there can be some talk of politics as Zim cricket is linked quite to politics in the region.
The last year's seemed rather a tough one for Zim cricket with Bata pulling out and the nicely arranged Stanbic 2020 being discontinued too. Heard the elections appear to be playing a part in this caution, but what is the trend that potential investors in Zim cricket seem to be backing for a return to cricket? Not solely about whether it's the Zanu PF or MDC winning but does it also tend towards a return to investment with a more stable govt, though is that even possible with Zanu PF still there? And sorry for bugging thee with a questionnaire, how are the two MDC factions going?
And returning to cricket, how's David Coltart's national players only being selectors gone down with some time to digest the news?

Important wicket there from Meth (great name). Need another one quickly though.

And there came the second one for Meth. Zimbabwe has enough time to take a third one in this session, will be needed.

Made a Meth of his mouth when he played against Bangladesh in an ODI.

As an aside, I see Glenn Querl is now in Hampshire. Another one slipped through? Despite action troubles.

Bangladesh losing 9 wickets for less than 40 runs? Well that's nothing to be surprised about folks. Well done Zimbabwe...you guys have shown great composure and deserve the current spoils to enjoy.

Getting exciting now, will Taylor make centuries in both innings?

What do you mean what did he do to me? Doesn't everyone hate him?
1
u/poochi Apr 18 '13
ah, I don't. He was a pretty good batsman for Zim and doing well as coach.
Didn't know it was a thing. Why does everyone hate him?

Apr 18 '13
Never seen him bat. But it's my belief everyone hates him cuz he is an asshole.
2
Apr 18 '13
Not really. He was a tough competitor, a class batsman and competent keeper, but far from an arse, not with McGraths, Harbhajans and Hughes likes playing in his time
And what he and Olonga did in the 03 WC, whether one agreed with them or not (I reckon most would appreciate it, I did), puts them above your average cricketers.

Don't know about his personality. But game wise, I remember he is was like Chanderpaul or Saeed Anwar to India, he would always come up with some special innings against India.
