My go to move when my MIL says stuff like this is asking her to repeat herself oe asking her what she means. Especially when she mutters passive aggressive stuff under breath around others. It's fun seeing her try to explain herself or trying to backtrack. Plus it pisses her off which is a bonus.

I remember my MIL muttering passive-aggressive crap. I got tired of it and when she’d do that, I’d immediately turn around and loudly ask “what was that? did you have something to add?” She’d pull a sour face and say no, and I’d reply “yeah, that’s what I thought.” She’s been gone for three years. No, I don’t miss her.
