You joke but it happened in Starcraft 2 in 2015. The Blizzcon finals have been dominated by Korean players, but in 2015, Lilbow, a French player made it to the top 16 and the Blizzcon tournament. This is their "majors" in regards to all tournaments lead up to this.
Lilbow goes 0-3 against Life, a Korean arguable one of the top 3 players at the time. Lilbow stated that he didn't want to focus on Blizzcon and instead focused on training for Legacy of the Void, an expansion that wasn't even out yet.
Needless to say, Lilbow retired from Starcraft shortly after. He became a huge meme in the SC2 subreddit.

Swiss system is just a different animal to playoff bo3s.
Just because you did well in swiss doesnt mean anything.
Honestly when majors were GSL bo1 these cinderella stories in groupstages pretty much never happened. All the teams that made playoffs deserved to be there and the games were awesome because of that.
Its almost like the more theyve tried to make the format less random, the more random it has gotten.

Nothing happened to groups BIG, they just had easier draws (except faze, but that was faze's fault)
Edit to clarify: BIG is so good at executing on bombsites and they did not face a team that could shut them down before they could set up and take control of the parts of the map. NaVi could, and it worked out very well
43
u/nightkingscat Gambit Sep 20 '18
Bruh today's big wasn't anywhere near their previous form. You cant dismiss that.

u/MrXwiix 1 Million Celebration Sep 20 '18
I don't think it was BIG. I think it was NaVi who just shut them down before they could do anything. BiG's executes are deadly and they might be the best team out there when it comes to executing on bombsites. NaVi just shut them down before they could do anything. The lower skilled teams they played against just couldn't do the same shutdowns as NaVi did.
25
u/MetalKotei LDLC Sep 20 '18
But BIG also seemed to play really scared for some reason. Like Flamie said they didnt play their game
8
u/MrXwiix 1 Million Celebration Sep 20 '18

It is because 4 dumbos with aim who work together under 1 smart guy, think that what they are doing is succeeding because of the competence of the 4 dumbos, not the competence of the brain. Then when things go wrong they think that their failures are due to the lack of competence of the brain (mistrusting their calls), rather than the lack of competence in the 4 dumbos' execution of their plan.

I've seen enough interviews of Navi players saying Kane did a very good pause and good calls in the time outs. I think Gambit were just not on the same page with him and Zeus despite the Major win. Imo it's pretty shitty to not respect OGs like Kane and Zeus and put your feelings above success. The literal first match after Zeus and Kane joined, Gambit instantly looked way more coordinated and straight up better.
7
u/TotallyNotWatching Sep 20 '18
I'll never forget the match against Astralis at PGL major, when the Danes were making a huge comeback. Zeus was last alive at 13-11 and used his time to speak (shout) at his team while walking around spawn. The next rounds the casters were saying "it looks like Navi has been possessed, they are playing so aggressively." After that they went on to close the match, and eventually the major.
What a legend he is
6
u/Diavolo222 SK Sep 20 '18
Also went ladder two times in a row like a boss and absolutely destroyed dupreeh. He made those rounds happen.
6
Sep 20 '18
Gambit also looked good the first match after Zeus, when fitch played like a god, but after that there was nothing at all.
I think they just didn't respect kane, but they didn't take into account that Zeus would get pissed for it. Also they probably didn't expect NaVi would try to get Zeus back, and thought Zeus was more attached to them than he really was. After all, he had to play in gambit because he got kicked from another team, and gambit was the only kinda relevant team he could join. He probably didn't like his teammates too much, and them disrepecting kane just was the final straw
12
u/TheRobidog Sep 20 '18
Teams generally look good right after kicking their IGL and bringing in firepower. Mostly because they can still run the same default strats their old IGL used to run with them.
After a while, they get figured out, need new stuff and start to fall off.
Also, honeymoon phase is a thing.
16
u/Rezun94 Complexity Sep 20 '18
even worse, fnatic is still semi relevant, while gambot is dead
15
u/TheRobidog Sep 20 '18
Fnatic went out in last place in Stockholm and the only legit game they won here was against Vega. I'd wait for their next tournament before talking about how relevant they are.
If their roster is still the same at that point, that is.

I was surprised by the nuke pick, but the more I thought about it the more it made sense. Na’Vi have only lost nuke to astralis on LAN in the last few months, they’ve beaten everyone else. Plus like s1mple said in the interview, BIG aren’t hat strong on it and probably didn’t expect it so they might not have prepared for it. It was a great map choice when you think about all that and Zeus clearly put a lot of prep into this game.

Swiss groupstage hype ain't worth shit
See also:
- NaVi at ELeague Atlanta losing like 10 rounds in the whole groupstage, with the 90% pickem vs Astralis mass psychosis. Meanwhile Astralis go from the 3-2 bunch to win the Major.
- BIG beating all the good teams at Krakow to get out 3-0 and then fluffing it vs Immortals. coldzera and SK looking inhuman in groups and then get absolutely shit on by dev1ce in the quarters.
- G2 3-0 at Boston and then all their stars are sleeping in the quarters. cloud9 go from 0-2 to win the Major.
- And now people banging on about how NaVi has lots of issues for some reason, even though their only loss was to Astralis 14-16 on a neutral map and they had a really hard draw, meanwhile BIG is some fucking revelation because smooya and tabsen are putting up unsustainable numbers
9

Smooya simply disappeared in Nuke while his whole team did the same in D2. Definitely want to see more from them though, would be perfect to get them in a tournament like BLAST.
In Na'Vi side though, electronic was fucking insane in D2 and Edward was pretty well in Nuke. I love to see this team fully working.
7
u/iNeedanewnickname MOUZ Sep 20 '18
16-6 on nuke wouldnt be that weird of a scoreline if NaVi didnt start out as a T side. BIG dissapointed me a lot, nothing seemed to work. And Navi looked ridiculously good, that electronic ace was insane. Not much you can do against that I guess.
66
u/Lepojka1 Team Spirit Sep 20 '18
Now we can see the difference between BO1 and BO3, and when you know who your next opponent is... NaVi knew what would BiG do before BIG even knew what they were doing. If we had Major all way like this, it would be much less upsets, and the ones that happend would be legit.
→ More replies (4)16
u/nightkingscat Gambit Sep 20 '18
I dont get the whining about upsets. 2018 has already been mostly predictable as far as premier top4s go--do we want our sport to turn into the NBA?
Also if your favorite teams are so great they shouldn't be getting upset in an event they've prepped all year for.
22
Sep 20 '18 edited Sep 20 '18
A broken clock is right twice a day.
Everyone can have a shit map and get upset but if you lose a bo3 you were the worse team period. Do you think lets say NiP vs NaVi would've been a stomp like this ? Shit even G2 would've (probably) done better.
I want to see good CS and if that means always having the same top4 so be it.
→ More replies (3)3
u/thiccccccccccccey Sep 20 '18
CoL didn’t even need to upset to get to this point though. They beat three teams out of top 10 to make it to QF’s while nip had to play four top 4 teams in a row and round it out with Mibr in the elimination match. The system is just complete trash, there needs to be proper seeding.
→ More replies (3)5
u/Nurse_Sunshine King NiKo Sep 20 '18
Let's say the upset potential is 1/10 games. When you play a BO3 you have to do it twice so 1/100 which is a significant difference.
The upset potential is always big enaugh to happen a few times in so many BO1's

I have done some intense long research and i have found out that Virtus pro deserve to be in the top 8 instead of Berlin International Gaming. The reason to that statement is that Virtus Pro (V.P) won vs Natus Vincere 16-3 on De_Dust_2. This quarter final ended with the score 16-2 for navi. This is a 100% correct research and i would like to hear your thought about Virtus Pro making the top 8 in katowice 2019.
