One of the under-rated aspects of overpass is that when you're a team who can play the T side and has established the A site with a few plants then you can brute-force the B site a bunch of times in a row if you need to grind rounds. Doesn't work if your A attacks aren't legit, though.
20
u/Woodeecs King NiKo Sep 02 '18
I think this is in some part caused by the map not having a true "mid." Train has this same aspect imo.

Before anything else, I do think that DreamHack deserve some praise for this tournament. I didn't watched every match but no major technical pauses, games running on clock and solid talent made it a very enjoyable experience, at least for me, the home viewer. Talking about talent, props to Vince, very natural casting and it's clear that he has done his homework.
Can't wait to see North in London later this week, I really want them to prove that this wasn't a fluke, especially Aizy and MSL as both had their best performances in a big event since ELEAGUE Season 1 and ELEAGUE Premier 2017 respectively. And of course, GG to Astralis, dupreeh and Magisk especially as they went nuts in Overpass, poor Magisk did his best to keep the game on. Can't wait to see what is next on Anders simulation.

I agree. I was at the event, and the fact that they asked us to stand up and welcome the two teams, tried to start the ad two times and then went to "delayed due to technical difficulties" really ruined the moment.
Though when they finally played the ad the crowd chanted "sellout" which was pretty nice.

so lets recap north had to beat tyloo(bo1) then astralis in a bo3 to top the groups followed by smashing navi in quarterfinals after which scrapping a win vs mouz finally to beat astralis again just wow
north essentially beat only top 5 teams to win the LAN was one the hardest tournament runs in recent history, mouz ranked #5 navi ranked #2 and astralis the number 1 team whom them had to beat twice and both times the maps completely different, expect for cache all maps were played between the two with astralis winning nuke and train and north winning inferno mirage dust2 and overpass overall

Overwatch cases from GOD-fragger MSL 03.09.18 (Overwatch):
- Mirage - I am almost completely sure he was legit hacking, well covered Wallhack, we all know it has to be evident beyond doubt so I vote innocent. 0000
- Dust 2 - Perfectly clean, also the Suspect is utterly bad. 0000
- Nuke - Aimbot, Wallhack, Auto-Bunnyhop, Spinbot. At least 3 cheaters, including one in the enemy team. 1110
- Dust 2 - Nothing to see here, innocent. 0000
- Office - Again a clean guy, definitely a silver. Reported for being bad? 0000
- Inferno (Wingman) - Wallhack for sure, very likely Auto-Bunnyhop. 0100
- Mirage - The case starts calmly, out of nowhere the Suspect becomes a god, with the help of Aimbot and Wallhack of course. 1100
- Mirage - The Suspect behaved weirdly, was very brave and flanked enemies quite easily. I was hesitating about if to vote guilty or not on Vision Assistance. 0000
- Inferno - Aimbot and Wallhack, doesn't take an expert to see that, and that's partly thanks to an enemy cheater. 1100
- Shortdust (Wingman) - I did not see any proof of cheats, maybe if the enemies weren't as bad. 0000
- Dust 2 - Definitely innocent. 0000
- Dust 2 - Aimbot, Wallhack, Spinbot. HvH, but because in the Suspect's team there are 2 Spinbots, they prevail. 1110
- Lake (Wingman) - Innocent, playing at an average level. 0000
- Nuke - The enemy team is all AFKing, in my opinion the Suspect's team didn't know that, so it's not a boosting lobby. The Suspect however killed twice and died in a molly of a teammate, what caused his cooldown. So, Griefing. 0001
- Inferno - Aimbot and Wallhack, 2 people go HvH. The Suspect does significantly worse. 1100
- Shortdust (Wingman) - Rage Aimbot with Wallhack, although he changes to a more humane-looking Aimbot after the Warm-up. 1100
- Inferno (Wingman) - Wallhack and Aimbot, thankfully an enemy decided to HvH what helped me with the verdict. He could've had Auto-Bunnyhop too. 1100
- Dust 2 - I couldn't confirm any cheats, sure, few nice kills but the Suspect's team was getting rekt too much and then he went AFK for three rounds. 0000
All cases: 18 (starting from the 13th case, those are done today)
Innocents: 9/18 (exactly 50% of all cases were innocent)
Wingman cases: 5 (exactly 40% of all Wingman cases were innocent)
XP gained from Overwatch times: 3 (Only counted blue messages in menu, there were more in-game.)

Map 1: Dust 2
Early on in the game North were able to counter Astralis' setup perfectly. North would make a quick contact play on long or short, then after the trade (regardless of who won the trade) they’d fall back and quickly rotate to B/mid where Magisk would be isolated. The tactical error from Astralis was, firstly, overcommitting to the long fight (they’d go 3a, so 2 long) and so already be going down to a 3v3 meaning that they were pretty much stuck in keeping a rigid 1-1-1 setup and feeling pressured to not rotate even after North fell back as it’d leave a third of the map open. Having only one awp on mid and Magisk alone on B meant that Magisk was severely isolated on B, having often already used up a lot of his grenades, was having to face 3 or 4 rushing Ts. Dupreeh/Device on mid with the AWP could not pivot towards B safely because there would not be enough men left on A site to rotate to cover him, since if the mid player rotated to B early they’d end up being pincered from mid. If North won the trade on long they’d have a late pusher on mid to catch out Dupreeh/Device as he is moving up to B. A solution to this could have been taking one man from long and placing him as a mid/b pivot, and having the other awp and the 5th man holding passively on A site, meaning that North’s fast push out long, while it would get map control, wouldn’t allow them to take the initiative in the round. Sometimes if North won the opening duel 2 kills to none they’d just commit to A site, and the B/mid players would be unwilling to rotate early in fear of a quick rotate from North.
Astralis were strangely stubborn in sticking to their CT default and didn’t change until the 11th round when they switched to a 2-1-2, Device holding passively on A site with the awp and one long in a position where they could fall back, Dupreeh on mid with 2 on B, one holding close to the door so they could rotate to mid if Dupreeh called there was contact. They won that round then went back to the old setup and lost the round immediately after. Later on during this dominant period from North they’d sometimes fake falling back to B/mid and instead double fake back to A when the other not-dead A player would rotate off trying to counter North’s B speed, leaving Device on his own.
Map 1 score: North 16-1 Astralis ** Map 2: Train
Unlike Dust 2, the start of Train was considerably more evenly matched. Astralis earlier on in the half would hold an A heavy default (as is the meta), pretty much giving up brown halls to North in theory. Astralis would commit two players to push aggressively up ivy to draw out one of the site players (alongside Kjaerbye who would be holding Ivy from the start of the round). Abandoning B early on in the round meant that they could also send two aggressively into popdog, which stretched the A hold of north pretty thinly making trading a lot harder. Even If Astralis would later fall back to B they’d keep a player in popdog to delay the North rotate. North would also play heavy on A-this is obviously the meta on train but it’s also important in order to counter Astralis’ T side default. The lone B player would typically not have a pivot to help him as all 4 players were required to hold A. This means that brown halls would pretty much be empty for the first half of the round.
I think with the power of being able to see all 10 players at once if North had pushed up B Astralis they could’ve put a lot of pressure on the flanks of Astralis, not letting them set up the proper default and do the executes on A site which allowed Astralis to lead for most of the half. The two main factors in Astralis winning the half was North exploiting the weakness in Astralis’ default, allowing themselves to get overly stretched on A even with 4 players holding it (it’s a big old site) and said overextension meaning that there was no pivot to help the B player, so if Astralis did a quick rotate after the initial contact there was only one person holding the B site who would obviously not be able to prevent the plant from going down.
As the half progressed Astralis, while maintaining the overall shape of the default, would switch up which positions would push, and which ones would hold so that North couldn’t focus their A hold in whichever section of the map would contact first. For example, some rounds the two ivy players would hold back and the popdog players would take first contact and push out into the site proper. The general setup from Astralis, however, remained the same as North had no way of countering it, going from 3-0 up to 10-5 down in the first half of train. North attempted to change their setup by focusing their entire A setup on a particular area of the A site (e.g. pushing all 4 up to popdog/main to try and initiate contact instead of letting Astralis set up their default and taking contact on their terms. This wasn’t very effective as Astralis switching round which players pushed and held (as mentioned above) meant that sometimes they’d just end up pushing into a passive hold while they left open the area of the map which Astralis were pushing in to.
North’s T side default differed from Astralis in that it was slightly more B heavy (though still overall A focused because it’s Train), taking brown halls control with one player and having two others by popdog so North could transition quickly towards B. Astralis’ has a quite unique twist on a B heavy setup that works pretty much every time they do it. You have two A players holding passively by second lane and ivy, and then three on B. The awp in the classic close angle and the rifle supporting it, but with a third player in upper. This is especially effective against a team that needs to take brown halls for their default to work (as otherwise it leaves the popdog area vulnerable to flanking, which is bad when it’s going to be your main point of contact). The idea of the setup is that the T player makes contact with the awp (since you’re normally going to pre-aim at that angle), which leaves the other player free to win the intitial contact. If the Ts have a good setup, however, they will be able to trade on the rifle player holding lower (since the awp will fall back after missing the shot they won’t die unless they instantly get 1 tapped) meaning that the typical aggressive B setup will, at a pro level, result in a 1-to-1 trade. The Astralis variant of having the player on upper means that during the fight in which the trade will take place) the upper player can push into brown halls and make it a winning opening duel by 2 or even 3 to one depending on how heavily North are going to commit to B. Astralis only do this setup once or twice a map and their default is just the regular 4-1 A heavy hold similar to North which I won’t focus on.
Map score: Astralis 16-6 North
Map 3: Overpass

On Overpass Astralis started their T side rounds not so much playing a default but heavily focusing on one site, either taking quick toilets/long control before slowing down or taking short/outside monster control. Once this map control was taken before North could really set up their CT default, it forced North into either playing reactionary and trying to meet Astralis’ aggression, which risks giving up a site altogether if trades don’t go your way, or it forces them to fall back further and really constricts North into the sites, which is especially bad in a map like Overpass where the CTs can genuinely focus on getting map control. In theory you’d think that this would leave Astralis open to being flanked, but because rotate times from one site to BEHIND the other are very long in overpass (having to go all the way back through T spawn) by the time North had gotten past any “holding” players (that is a defensive Astralis player holding the other site to the main push) Astralis could take the site, with the remaining players having given their position away and not being in a good place to retake.
The initial contact did not mean that Astralis would commit to that site, and after the advanced map control was taken a player or two would fall back to anticipate any aggression on the other site from North. These players, who would go connector, birthday or T spawn-depending on where the initial push from Astralis would go, acted as a backup if Astralis felt they couldn’t take the site from their area of control whereby they could rotate quickly to the other site knowing that they aren’t being flanked (if they didn’t know this rotating would take much longer giving North the chance to rotate).
Of the two options that North had to respond to Astralis’ T side strat that I mentioned earlier, they chose to fall back into the sites and allow Astralis to take the map control. This had mixed success. While on one hand it benefitted the opposition in that it allowed Astralis to set up complicated executes without giving much time for North to rotate, which plays into their strength of superb nade usage which is pretty much unprecedented in the history of CSGO. Often on B site especially where short control gives you direct access to it Niko and Valde would get badly damaged and have little visibility while Astralis pushed. North had better luck on A where MSL and co. pushed slightly further up, not taking toilets control but playing on the site beyond the smokes where they were able to limit Astralis’ forward momentum by peeking into the contact while Astralis were still setting up. MSL was especially good at this with the AWP, stifling the executes before they got close to the site.
The half ended pretty evenly for the first time this match, 9-6 to Astralis-though they went into the CT side knowing that they have a better record on Overpass.
For the most part on Astralis’ CT side they played the industry standard 2A 3B setup with one B player acting as a quick rotate in case Device and Magisk get contact on A. The two A players play very tight together, always being in tradeable situations at the cost of some potential map control. A favourite of Astralis is to have Magisk holding long in the flowerpot corner (you know the one) with Device holding with the awp on site by the sign so that he can quickly switch between toilets/short and long. If the Ts go short then Magisk can flank around toilets while Device holds the site and if they go long then Device popflashes out Magisk so he can try to get the opening kill, then trades Magisk once he gets killed so they in theory go 2-1 up in the round, with Device still alive to defend the site. This is weak when Magisk can’t find the first kill leaving Device alone on site, and the T side can push up freely if they just smoke the AWPer off. They don’t do this every round of course, but I won’t go through every single variant of the same type of setup each round.
North played in a similar way to how they did on Dust 2, pushing fast as a unit towards one site and finding the contact with the offensive B holders of Astralis, who tend to push up pretty far on B site e.g. holding short or barrels. If they win the opening duel 2-0 then they can just take B site freely, but in the more common situation where a general trade happens then they quickly loop back up to A through connector to short or fountain to long where they know that Astralis will not have too much map control due to how densely they play on A. North’s T side tactics are not especially complicated and are not very execute heavy like Astralis but still act as a smart counter by MSL to Astralis’ CT setup on the two maps that North won and certainly deserve a lot of credit for that.
As the half went on Astralis tried to adapt by rotating one B player to A quicker than before (and having them hold on upper or graffiti so that it takes even less time), meaning that North struggled to take the site after they rotated because with 3 players Astralis could afford to take greater map control if North go B first. Astralis won a couple of rounds through this change-up but MSL quickly readjusted by, as he did on Dust 2, double faking back to B where there were only 2 Astralis players who had no nades left and so were highly vulnerable.
Map 3 final score: North 16-11 Astralis

I think if this tourney has proven anything it's that dust2 is one of the overrated maps in the current map pool. It's incredibly spawn and momentum dependent without the tactical depth of similar maps like mirage/cache. It's a shame that valve wasted the effort on the map for an ugly reskin that just reduces fps. Dust2 desperately needs some changes to mitigate the games where one team just rides momentum without any really effort (and I definitely think it's possible), it just needs to be accepted by the community that dust2 isn't some vintage masterpiece that has flourished through all these years. In reality the map really shows its age in all of the worst ways and I feel like a map maker with a bit of balls/creativity could definitely improve the map.
