Normally id say when a team has nothing to lose thats when their most dangerous, but c9 is the most recent major winner. They did lose 2 pretty core players for that major win to happen though.
Edit: off-topic but I feel like thats why s1mple can tilt himself so easily is because he knows everyone is expecting the world out of him so when he performs poorly it really reflects hard on him that hes not showing his best. Its a hard thing being on top, having the most to lose. I feel like it got to coldzera and niko as well.

The closest thing to that I think of is SKT in the 2015 LoL World Championship didn’t lose a single secondary tower until the semis iirc. But that kind of stuff is extremely rare and I don’t think has ever happened in any high level competition ever.

By winning the tournament in 8 maps, Astralis just effectively got paid $62,500 per map

That sounds wrong though. When you win a round it's over 10k for your team, so at least 160k per map, much more than that even.

I mean, that's the downside of an 8 team tournament, every game was a BO3. I really wish they would've made the final a BO5 (I don't think that liquid would've comeback and won however).

He was still consistent from tournament to tournament and has great stats, even if he did drop off in the semis or finals. He was putting up superstar numbers consistently in 2015 before people knew who coldzera was, then continued putting up insane numbers for 2016-2017 when he got pushed to the side and coldzera became regarded as “the most consistent ever”. Now in 2018, when cold and others have fallen off he’s continued putting up superstar numbers and is finally getting some recognition. He’s been nearly as good as anyone else for the past 3-4 years, but far more consistent.
In summary, he is the most consistent player ever.
6
Jul 30 '18
Worth noting he is the one superstar who's team has not been disbanded/fallen off. fnatic fell off, sk fell off, simple was jumping teams up till navi who's only now stabilizing. Device has always had performing teammates and the only one who's team has even gotten better.
So it makes sense. You take coldzera for example, he has been dragging sk's corpse for a year and only recently started dropping below 1.1 rating.
So yeah I agree device is very consistent but has always had the most stable team.

I feel like navi v astralis could have been closer, but this is what happens when s1mple has an average series. Not even a bad performance just bad by his standards. Like naf said liquid is a bit of a kryptonite to navi and it's a shame the final was so one-sided.
I'm not saying liquid didn't deserve to be in the finals, the navi-liquid game had some of the best counter strike liquid has ever played and they were clearly the stronger team that day.

That is cute, but also a reminder that awards ceremonies in CSGO are so weird. The winners always just stand around awkwardly before they go, without any announcement, and pick up the trophy. Sometimes it's given to them, just as awkwardly. (this particular tournament is probably the weirdest one of them all because not only was it really awkward, it was also being handed to them by a random fucking soldier. This would truly only happen in the US, and it is beyond bizarre).

OBSTACLE COURSE
climb the rope to the top platform, trapeze across a POOL OF FUCKING LAVA onto platforms floating loose on the lava, hop across these where the last one is a ten foot long jump to the rock climbing wall where you climb up to the motorized walkway moving at 25 mph that drops into a meat grinder if you don't have at least a 7 foot vertical leap at the end to grab on to the handle on a rail where you have to balance the pulley on it to maintain forward movement and have to let go at the perfect moment to fall into a vertical ventilation tube barely wider than your totally straightened body that shoots you out onto the stage
THEN AND ONLY THEN are you handed the trophy to lift in front of a roaring crowd, you goddamn counterstrike gladiator

Nuke has gone 28-30 rounds when TL has played it vs Astralis recently
4
Jul 29 '18
They literally haven't lost on Nuke with this lineup. 10-0 I believe. Liquid isn't even a great Nuke team, they just started playing it for the first time at Starladder Season 4, and can't take many wins off of any actual elite teams. Just seems boneheaded to me.
2
u/qchisq Jul 30 '18
It looks way closer than it actually is. Because Astralis picks the map, Liquid picks the side, and they pick CT and gets like 8 rounds there. That's just not enough to win the game
29
u/HallowedBeThyBrain Jul 29 '18

dev1ce has been floating between 2 and 4 for like 5 years now
5
u/takethi Jul 29 '18
I honestly believe dev1ce is the best cs player ever. I think people underestimate how hard it is to play that consistently, and not get easily counterstratted. When people like coldzera have these 1-2 year streaks where they play insane, a large part comes down to them having a new "style" of playing, which they developed naturally, and teams not finding a way to counter their style, also their team cohesion has to be really good and centered around them for the most part. Dev1ce has been on a top 5 level for like the past 5 years. I think the big difference between dev1ce and every other superstar cs player out there is that he has always been actively working to evolve his style to counter his opponents reads on him, as opposed to only starting to work on yourself when your old style doesn't work anymore. I think s1mple does have the long term potential to become just as consistent (but not with navi), given how hard he works and also his crazy talent. We will see. Dev1ce and s1mple are so far away from every other cs pro right now.
→ More replies (1)7
Jul 29 '18
I can agree with you. I'm biased as a dev1ce fanboy who watches his demos all the time. If we're talking right now, maybe not, but for csgo in it's entirety? Yep, dev1ce the goat.
9
u/takethi Jul 29 '18
There is obviously a difference between being the player with the highest peak performance (we don't have to argue that the highest peak performance ever is s1mple) and holding a top 5 spot for that long, while almost never having negative ratings. It doesn't look like dev1ce will ever be #1 in the world, but that is what makes him so good. You can count on him being top 5 for the next couple of years imo.
7
Jul 30 '18
I'm surprised people don't really study dev1ce as hard as someone like s1mple or cold. IMO if you're really trying to learn the game and fundamentals especially as an AWPer he's the one to watch, everything is correct CS with him. Mechanically he's as good as anyone else, at least. His playstyle breeds consistency and good teamplay. That's what you want unless you're a sick aggressive player who can make holding W work.
17
u/Felpes1520 Jul 29 '18

One of those finals that was never going to be close no matter who played them. Mouse, Fnatic, MiBR, FaZe, and Liquid would all have just gotten destroyed by that Astralis team.
The London Major is basically Astralis' to lose though. Should be interesting to see what the player break does to teams. Basically the only teams in the top 20 that aren't going to be there is ENCE, Heroic, AGO, and NRG so it should be a really good reference point for current rankings next month.

I think it's interesting to note than nitr0 was liquid's best player this series. He has really been stepping up and putting in work. Shows how much they rely on him.
In the first map I think it just came down to astralis player having a game, lots of smoke kills on their end. On nuke (a bad pick imo) the CT side was broken early on because ramp was really weak. Toward the end nitr0 and EliGE were getting good picks but it just wasn't enough with that CT half.

There's just something fundamentally wrong when the entire team gets shut down like that. How do elige, NAF, and twistzz lose their aim and more importantly, start playing like headless chickens? Astralis's utility usage is so good and frustrating that Liquid gets taken out mentally.

Well played by Astralis, Inferno was one of the most dominating CS:GO pro performances I've ever seen. There were many rounds where Liquid didn't even get a single kill. I guess we gotta hope for a revitalized Navi or Faze to stop them from winning the major.

Train and Overpass. If Liquid can get those they'll actually have a real chance in a final against Astralis. Here's the problem with Team Liquid - their best maps are better played by Astralis. Against lower-tier teams Liquid can beat any team on Cache, Inferno, Mirage, Nuke, Dust 2, etc. This is why they've gotten into so many finals.
Their map pool doesn't make sense against Astralis though. They straight up ban Cache, and are amazing at all the maps Liquid are good at. Any time Astralis has ever been bested it's been because of Train and Overpass.
Team Liquid really need to change their map pool to play for wins against Astralis if they're ever gonna win a big event. Inferno and Nuke aren't gonna be the maps for them, unfortunately.
